Broder: Tuesday Was "Shake Up Washington" Day

According to David Broder in today's Washington Post, "news that three congressional incumbents" - Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT), Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-GA), and Rep. Joe Schwarz (R-MI) - "had lost their races in a single day" represented "the strongest signal yet of voter dissatisfaction with the status quo in Washington." According to Broder:

...opposition to current policy in Iraq is building -- and so is dissatisfaction with a Washington that seems to be drowning in partisanship and incapable of breaking its policy gridlock on immigration, energy or health care. The protests are coming from both the right and left, but the greatest frustration is among the broad swath of centrist voters who feel they have no voice. In this environment, incumbents of neither party can feel safe.

Here in Virginia, this is bad news for several incumbents with lockstep, rubberstamp support for Iraq and for President Bush - George "Rubberstamp" Allen, Tom "DeLay" Davis, Frank Wolf "in sheep's clothing," Virgil "MZM Scandal" Goode, and Thelma "Cheney" Drake.  Voters appear to feel strongly that the country is on the wrong course, and they have nobody to blame but Republicans, who control all three branches of government. Ideological cross-currents, as exemplified by the Michigan upset of a relatively moderate (stem cell supporting) Republican, may scramble matters even further.  And then there are international events, such as we saw today with the massive terrorist plot broken up by the Brisith, that throw yet another huge wildcard into the equation.

The bottom line?  ANYTHING could happen this fall, with the possible "Category 5 political hurricane" that Charlie Cook talked about the other day.  If that happens, many "safe" incumbents could be blown away or swept out to see.  Batten down the hatches, everyone, the weather looks like it's about to get rough!

If candidates start speaking the truth, people get angry.

And then they go out and vote.

Keep speaking the truth, and LOUDLY!
