The New Webb Bumper Stickers

Let me just say that I think they look better than the old ones.  Much better.  But I won't be putting one on my car.  Why?  Well, let me explain what happened when I recieved the sticker in the mail.

I saw I had an envelope from the Webb Campaign.  Maybe it was another invitation for a local event?  I opened it, and saw the sticker.  The first thing I said was, "Oh God!  I can't use this!  I'll call Greg and see if he wants it."

Why won't I put it on my car?  Why would I rather give it to Greg?  My friend Greg goes to UVA, a school where the official colors are Blue and Orange.  The same colors as Webb's new Bumper Stickers.

Now, here's where the problem comes in.  I go to Virginia Tech.  Yeah, we kind of have a rivalry with UVA.  During the Kaine Campaign last year,  Young Dems at VT created a fashion statement by creating "Kilgore is a Wahoo" buttons.  I was surprised by how many people actually wore them.  As a loyal Hokie, I am NOT putting Blue and Orange on my car.

But there is a solution.  An easy one.  Kilgore had the same problem with his Orange and Blue Bumper Stickers last year.  He fixed it by releasing a Maroon and Orange version of the bumper sticker, which appeared to be much more popular at my school.  I think that maybe the Webb Campaign should create an Maroon and Orange version of the bumper sticker.  Not many, just a few that maybe the Virginia Tech Young Dems could pass around to students and alumni.

This sounds ridiculous, I know.  But it's the way it is.  I don't want Orange and Blue on my car, and many other Hokies feel the same way I do.  Just a little something like Maroon and Orange "Hokies for Webb" bumper stickers could go a long way...

That and some "Allen is a Wahoo" buttons.  But I think the Young Dems can cover that.

Put it on your car.

I still have the old one on my car (DanG - 8/8/2006 1:57:17 PM)
I'm keeping the old "Born Fighting" one on my car until I an finish my "Hokies for Webb" sticker.

Trust me (Matt in VA - 8/10/2006 11:06:54 AM)
as a former Tech student (transferred this semester), it's worse than wearing a cowboys jersey at a skins game.

Create your own. (phriendlyjaime - 8/8/2006 12:17:41 PM)
Then buy one of those magnetic bumper sticker holders, slide in your graphic design, and voila!

Or, just suck it up and put it on the car.  ;)

Exactly, (Susan Mariner - 8/8/2006 12:45:55 PM)
Tech students and alumni can even have actual bumper stickers made up by printing companies if they want to.  A man showed up at one of our Webb volunteer meetings with 90 "Republicans for Webb" stickers.  He had made up 100, took one himself and gave the others to Republican friends supporting Webb and gave us the rest to distribute.  He did it on his own.

I agree that "Hokies for Webb" would be great.  You should get on it, Dan!

I am working on that, actually (DanG - 8/8/2006 1:55:55 PM)
Scanning the Webb bumper sticker in, changing the colors, and printing it back out.

You should try to (Eric - 8/8/2006 2:11:02 PM)
get a copy of the original graphic, rather than scan in.  One of the RK readers (Sorry, I forgot who) either made or played a significant role in design - so he should have a photoshop (or other) original.  That's the best bet for print quality.

I think it would be really cool.... (thegools - 8/8/2006 11:34:00 PM)
....to see what other people come up with. If people post them here, everyone can get the benefit of printing & using them.  Maybe the campaign will even pick some of them up and start printing them for wider distribution.

I am sure people can do better than this, but its a start....

Exactly (DanG - 8/8/2006 11:51:17 PM)
I know I may sound foolish, but stuff like this WILL make a difference at Tech.

Copyright laws (thegools - 8/9/2006 1:15:03 AM)
I am told that the campaign won't put schools trademarks (Hosiers, Dukes, Wahoos..etc.) on stickers because of the copyrights.  But, as far as I know there is no reason they can't print them in various school colors.

And as for privately printed stickers...I would do whatever the hell I wanted to.

A large size copy of this can be found at

to save people the effort of scanning it.

You obviously aren't a hokie ;) (DanG - 8/8/2006 1:55:13 PM)
There's no "sucking it up" when it comes to UVA.

Use scissors (RayH - 8/8/2006 2:37:50 PM)
Trim the orange edges off, and you're left with a more innocent white on navy.

Just a thought...

I'm gonna regret this, but... (Bubby - 8/8/2006 2:52:26 PM)
George Welsh, after living a full life, died. When he got to heaven, God was showing him around. They came to a modest little house with a faded UVA flag in the window. "This house is yours for eternity, George," said God. "This is very special - not everyone gets a house up here."

George felt special, indeed, and walked up to his house. On his way up the porch, he noticed another house just around the corner. It was a 3-story mansion with a Burgundy and Orange sidewalk, 50 foot tall flagpole with an enormous Virginia Tech logo flag, and in every window, VT curtains.

George looked at God and said, "God, I'm not trying to be ungrateful, but I have a question. I was a darn good coach, I won several bowl games, and I even went to the College Football Hall of Fame."

God said, "So what do you want to know, George?"

"Well, why does Frank Beamer get a better house than me?"

God chuckled and said, "George, that's not Frank Beamer's house......
It's mine."

And I MAY regret this; (phriendlyjaime - 8/8/2006 5:38:35 PM)
The Buckeyes will always kick Tech's ass.

::ducks, cringes::

"Drive, drive on down the field...."

I heart Ohio State.

Oh no... (DanG - 8/8/2006 5:44:56 PM)
I believe it's going down.
Judges, is it going down?
Yes, the judges rule that it is, in fact, going down.

I love this (DanG - 8/8/2006 5:45:43 PM)
Thank you for that.  Made my day.

Oh, it is so ON. (phriendlyjaime - 8/8/2006 5:47:45 PM)
My five foot three womanly self is gonna punch you in the kneecaps, and force you into a Buckeyes hoodie.

IT'S ON.

;) btw. n/t (phriendlyjaime - 8/8/2006 5:49:39 PM)

Never (DanG - 8/8/2006 11:50:22 PM)
Never never never!
