"You can tell Sen. George Allen of Virginia to [vulgarity deleted]"

In case you missed this, there's a great story in the Daily Press about Sen. Conrad Burns (R-MT) insulting Virginia firefighters who came to his state to help battle forest fires.  Apparently, upon seeing a crew of firefighters from Virginia, Burns "stormed up to the Virginia crew and cussed them."

"See that guy over there?" the senator said, according to a subsequent report of the incident. "He hasn't done a [expletive deleted] thing. They sit around. I saw it up on the Wedge fire and in northwestern Montana some years ago. It's wasteful. You probably paid that guy $10,000 to sit around. It's gotta change."

Nice.  But it "gets better," according to the Daily Press:

A member of the Daily Press Editorial Board contacted Burns' Washington office to check the story and to see if the senator had any more to say on the subject.

The young man (very young, we surmise) who answered the phone responded with language that would make a sailor, maybe even Burns himself, blush. Imagine a "South Park" tirade in full force, laced with assorted colorful obscenities, and you get the idea.

"And you can tell Sen. George Allen of Virginia to [vulgarity deleted]," said Burns' spokesman.

It took close to 10 minutes to finally convince the gentleman in Burns' office that, no, the caller was not his chum in Allen's office, but in fact a representative of a Virginia newspaper.

Ah, the sweet sound of right-wing Republicans fighting...when they're not insulting hard-working Virginia firefighters, that is.

They have apparently already moved on to another western fire. And Conrad Burns is no mere foul mouthed politician.  No, ol' Conrad is the Republican Chairman of the Senate Interior Appropriations Subcommittee - he has huge control over the funding for this federal agency.

And Conrad is also Felon Lobbyist Jack Abramoff's best buddy - having received nearly half of his PAC campaign funds from ol'Jack  ($143,000).  Conrad is going to be replaced by Jon Tester this fall, and our pal Virginia Belle is working hard to make it happen.  Hey Belle! Kick ol' Conrad in the shins for the Augusta Hotshots!

Never thought I'd say this (DukieDem - 8/7/2006 10:14:56 AM)
But George Allen moves up a notch in the ladder of life by being insulted by Conrad Burns. The man epitomizes evil; Allen only epitomizes sleaze.

Its an axis of evil (Bubby - 8/7/2006 10:46:02 AM)
Revolving around how much soft money Burns and Allen take - their lobbyist buddies and corporate donors expect SOMETHING for the money.  That is why Allen would vote to restrict your ability to buy reduced cost prescriptions from Canada, would advocate oil drilling on the Virginia coast, and continues to yap on about "free trade" - while Virginia jobs leave southside.

Senator Bought-and-Sold would be a better name. He was bought by special interests, and is regularly sold by the Whitehouse (except for the 3% free-will he retained).  Virginia deserves better.

I agree (msnook - 8/7/2006 4:55:12 PM)
If Sen. Allen gave Burns a piece of his mind, and Burns is pissed at Allen, he gets a couple points in my book -- not as a Republican, but as a Virginian. I don't consider this a partisan thing, I consider it a Virginia thing. If it becomes public knowledge that Senator Allen gave Burns a hard time for what he said to Allen's constituents, Webb should praise him for what he said, and make it clear that he too would stick up for Virginia firefighters in this situation.

I know it's strange to say that one candidate should praise the other, but it would be quite a refreshing show of Virginia solidarity, and I don't think it would cost Webb a thing politically.

I don't consider Allen a Virginian... (mosquitopest - 8/7/2006 8:53:17 PM)
George Allen was born in CA and recently stated on the record and in pbulic that he wished he would prefer to be in Iowa....

So he's just a transplant and has no loyalties to the commonwealth of VA....

Money Talks... (VA Breeze - 8/7/2006 11:54:16 PM)
George F. Allen and Conrand Burns are good enough friends for Burns' PAC-Friends of the Big Sky to give Allen $10,000. Conrad "I slaughter Wild Horses" Burns doesn't seem to understand the sacrifice these people make to fight wildfires.
