From the story about ex-Gilmore aide Claude Allen:

"Claude A. Allen, President Bush's former domestic-policy adviser and a protege of former Sen. Jesse Helms, R-N.C., is scheduled to plead guilty in court Friday to a single count of misdemeanor theft.

Allen, 45, will plead guilty to fraudulently stealing items worth less than $500 from a Target store in suburban Montgomery County, Md., near his Gaithersburg home, according to documents filed Wednesday in the county's Circuit Court."

Wasn't he doing something corrupt like turning them back in for money.  Leave it to bush's people to think of every angle of corruption.  He won't do time.  He'll just lose his over 100K job.  Daddy warbucks fixed things for him.

Actually, he resigned from his job back on February 9 (RayH - 8/3/2006 11:41:32 AM)
I guess that he must have gotten the charges against him reduced, too, and does not face a felony rap. He was originally charged with stealing more than $5000 from Target and Hechts stores by fraudulantly returning electronic merchandise that he did not buy.

I didn't think he worked for Gilmore. He did work as spokesman for Jesse Helms in NC. He's a protege of Clarence Thomas, and was nominated for a judgeship (!) in the US Court of Appeals, Fourth Circuit.

Is this a tragic story of personal failure, or a history of a person with a basic character disorder who managed to make his way to the top as a darling favorite of conservative power brokers?
