George Allen Profits from "Plan B"

From the Webb campaign...typical right-wing/Allen hypocrisy on sexual matters.  This one's a doozy.

+óGé¼+ôPro-Life+óGé¼-¥ George Allen+óGé¼Gäós Dance With Plan B +óGé¼+ôMorning After+óGé¼-¥ Contraception Pill Manufacturer

Gucci Gulch, Washington, DC +óGé¼GÇ£ George Felix Allen routinely tells Virginia audiences one reason they should vote for him is that they +óGé¼+ôknow+óGé¼-¥ him.

Really.

+óGé¼+ôDo Virginians know that while George Allen panders to the far right wing of his party as a staunch +óGé¼+ôpro-lifer+óGé¼-¥ he accepts funds from, and makes money off a major pharmaceutical manufacturer, Barr Laboratories, whose main product is oral contraceptives, including the over-the-counter Plan B morning-after contraceptive?+óGé¼-¥ Jim Webb campaign spokesperson, Steve Jarding asked.

The answer is: He does.

On George Allen+óGé¼Gäós latest financial disclosure to the Federal Election Commission, the Allen campaign lists a $4,419.54 +óGé¼+ôtravel expense+óGé¼-¥ payment to Barr Laboratories.  The payment is a travel reimbursement to Barr Laboratories because Allen apparently* used their private airplane for his political travels.  Unfortunately for Allen, the FEC requires that candidates reimburse corporations for their use of private corporate jets or any other travel and mandates that those reimbursements are made public.

There+óGé¼Gäós more.

George Allen, Mr. Family Values.  Mr. Panderer to the Far Right +óGé¼GÇ£ owns stock in, you guessed it, Barr Laboratories.  In fact, last week, members of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee threatened to block the nomination of the acting Food and Drug Administration Commissioner because of the stalled status of the Plan B+óGé¼Gäós over the counter status, which prompted the FDA to finally move forward.

+óGé¼+ôFollowing news that the FDA was reconsidering its decision to hold up the over the counter Plan B, Barr shares climbed $2.42 a share or about five percent to $51.25 a share +óGé¼GÇ£ that means that George Allen is a bit richer this week than he was last week +óGé¼GÇ£ all because Mr. Pro-lifer, owns stock in a company that makes Plan B.  I don+óGé¼Gäót think Virginians knew that fact about you Senator,+óGé¼-¥ Jarding said.

+óGé¼+ôSenator, whose side are you on? This seems extremely hypocritical. You keep saying that Virginians should vote for you because they know you.  The truth is, Virginians don+óGé¼Gäót really know you and when they get to know how you have become more extreme since you arrived in the Senate and began selling out to special interests, we don+óGé¼Gäót think they will like what they see,+óGé¼-¥ Jarding said.

* FEC reports do not quantify travel reimbursements, but the amount is so high that it suggests private jet travel.

I didn't know Allen supported abortion! (Tom Joad (Kevin) - 8/2/2006 6:25:46 AM)
Plan B is considered abortion by many on the Right. I wonder what they'll have to say about this.

Quite honestly it pisses me off that someone in his position would condemn women on one hand for getting Plan B while profiting on them on the other hand.

Barr Labs (martha - 8/2/2006 6:34:32 AM)
Barr Labs is right across Perrowville Road and near ( within walking distance of) Jefferson Forest High School where I taught for 29 years. State Senator Steve ( Gay Marriage Amendment) Newman also supports Barr Labs.

Barr has donated $$$ to Jefferson Forest for scholarships and awards for science so Barr has been a good friend to our school. On the other hand Barr uses hypocritical Newman and Kathy Byron to promote business in Bedford County, which helps Barr and nobody brings this up when they run for office.

Newman was also involved w/ a company that benefited from Project EXILE ( reducing guns). He is a smarmy politican and needs to be booted out of office.

Come on take the money and run Allen.....(Steve Miller Band) (bladerunner - 8/2/2006 6:50:31 AM)
You know this really does amaze me how hypercritical some of these senators down on the Hill are. You say to yourself,"he wouldn't be that stupid would He?" To own stock in something like Barr, then try to play games with it in the Senate to make stock prices go up, even if it's against his supposed "Pro-Life" stance--to me that's either stupidity or just plain arrogant bravado. "I want my money regardless--just like Tommy Davis." The real crime is that the average voter will never know or understand this whole issue.

Barr Gives 89% of its donations to Republicans (Lowell - 8/2/2006 6:58:06 AM)
According to VPAP.  That includes $85,000 to former Virginia Republican Governor Jim Gilmore's PAC ("New Majority Project"), $55,934 to Jerry Kilgore, $24,500 to Bill "Gutter" Bolling, $17,500 to Mark Earley, $9,000 to Bob McDonnell, and $8,100 to the Joint Republican Caucus.  Also, $250 to JoAnn "Candy Cane" Davis and $750 to Leo Wardrup, among others.  Hypocrites EVERYWHERE in the Republican Party.  Big surprise.

As far as I know, all of these Republicans (Lowell - 8/2/2006 7:06:25 AM)
oppose Plan B.  F***ing hypocrites.

Allen vote no (Lowell - 8/2/2006 7:14:31 AM)
in March 2005, George Allen voted no to provide $100M to reduce teen pregnancy by education & contraceptives.

Anyone who voters "no" on reducing teen (summercat - 8/2/2006 9:07:31 AM)
pregnancy by education and contraceptives is an idiot, imo.  Allen needs to be nailed on this.  I am very much of the "pro-PUP" school--that is, pro Preventing Unwanted Pregnancies.  Plan B does not cause abortions--it is nothing more than an oral contraceptive.  While I think that a slogan for all men should be "If she's not your wife, use a condom," I think it is high tine Plan B got out there as an easily-acquired pregnancy=prevention aid for women.
I'm no great fan of Hillary, but I am gald to see her leading the charge to force the FDA to make Plan B available OTC.
