Name the Amendment Contest

For a little Friday afternoon fun we put forth a contest, a challenge, an open call, to give the Marshall/Newman Amendment a fitting name.

It seems a few people, no naming names or party affiliation, would like it called the "Marriage Amendment".  That sounds very important - like it will save all current marriages AND save the very concept of marriage for those who haven't yet tied the knot.  Problem is, the amendment won't "fix" existing or future marriages, except to constitutionally outlaw a very limited number of them.  Oh, and it'll allow a few homophobes to feel really good about themselves by laboring under the delusion that somehow they've "saved" heterosexuality by sticking it to the gays (metaphorically, of course).  Furthermore, the amendment introduces some other nasty side effects.  Here are a few other RK links on the subject:

The pro-domestic violence amendment [UPDATE: added by Rob]

"Marriage Amendment" just doesn't seem like the correct name.  It might be the right (wink) name, but it's not the appropriate name.

It's been called a number of names already, so feel free to bring forth those or to make up some new ones.  If we get enough entries we'll have a vote next week to democratically determine the appropriate name.

My name (Josh Israel - 7/21/2006 1:26:25 PM)
I like the "Bob Marshall Knows More About Who You Should Marry Than You Do" Amendment.

One of my favorites (Eric - 7/21/2006 1:30:14 PM)
is the "Pro Domestic Abuse Amendment", due to it's rather, er, liberal allowance of abuse in non-married living arrangements.

"the Anti-Marriage" ammendment (pitin - 7/21/2006 1:32:52 PM)
too simplistic?

Oh yes, (kevinceckowski - 7/21/2006 1:39:27 PM)
call it the "Marriage Amendment That Keeps on Growing and Growing and Growing"  No pun intended, but there is so much in it that it makes me sick.

There was a letter, I believe in the Washington Times that my boyfriend's dad cut out.

It was a story of a happy gay couple, in a new home, new neighborhood. All the neighbors loved them.  They would cut the grass and do the flower gardens, and even shovel their neighbors snow.  All was grand.

Then one day, out from the corner of one neighbor's eye, she saw them kiss, on the FRONT YARD. Oh my GOD, sound the alarm!!  Warning Will-Robinson!!

She quickly organized the neighbors, and they WROTE A PETITION, that such behavior is NOT allowed.  She proudly delivered it to their door one morning (probably with a fresh brewed pot of Java).

Suddenly the neighbors felt sad, because the gay boys did not want anything to do with them EVER AGAIN, so she wrote Dear Abbey or something like that, and asked her what she should do.

Dear Abbey said they were all narrow-minded bigots and it's no wonder they did not want anything to do with them ever again.

And that is the marriage amendment in a couple of nutshells (and nutcases).  Control what you are afraid of, all the way to changing the Constitution. COOH-COOH!

Uh...... (kestrel9000 - 7/21/2006 1:57:12 PM)
the "After the Segregationists Lost the Civil Rights Movement in the 60s We in the South Need Someone New To Oppress" amendment?
Or maybe the "Return Of Pink Triangles" amendment?
Hell, why not just call it what it is: the "God Hates Fags"amendment.
Or maybe, just the Hate Amendment.
Why ballast it up with extra words?

Another idea: (kestrel9000 - 7/21/2006 2:05:38 PM)
maybe we should ask ol' Pastor John what he thinks it oughter be called.

The Second-Class Citizenship Amendment (brimur - 7/21/2006 2:10:07 PM)
n/t

How about the Anti-Marriage Plus So Much More Amendment (d'moore - 7/21/2006 2:11:28 PM)
Or just the Against Marriage Amendment. It's about limiting rights not protecting them.
I hope all you readers are tuned in to the Commonwealth Coalition. They are promoting the vote no education project.

wife beaters' amendment? (Rob - 7/21/2006 2:26:19 PM)

"We're hiding the real issues" amendment is good (phriendlyjaime - 7/21/2006 3:04:35 PM)
so is:

"we're protecting your children from the real world" amendment

"hey-it's an election year" amendment

"Pat Robertson paid us off" amendment

"Listen, we can't win the war on terror with gays getting married" amendment

"Nothing to see here...move along" amendment

I have you all beat. (JD - 7/21/2006 3:08:28 PM)
Here's the most inflammatory (and sadly, apt) names I can think of:  The "Pro-AIDS amendment" or how about the "Let Them Die For Their Sins Amendment."

The 'Civil Rights Ain't For Everyone' amendment... (Loudoun County Dem - 7/21/2006 3:27:46 PM)
Or

The 'I Support Oppression' amendment.

Taxation without Equality Amendment (MorrisMeyer - 7/21/2006 3:58:24 PM)
Given that gay Virginians are taxpaying members of our state and our nation - how do you justify disenfranchising them from the rights that others in our society are afforded?

I think (kestrel9000 - 7/21/2006 5:40:33 PM)
a bunch of people voted against desegregation around here a long time ago....I knew better than those dolts too, or sure as hell would have, had I been old enough.
Please to return beneath your bridge.

Jim Crow laws were wildly popular (Bubby - 7/21/2006 5:44:53 PM)
Passed by huge pluralities in Virginia. Seems like you would have more respect for The Law than to use it as a tool for discrimination...but maybe not.  Everything for sale eh?

You took the words right out of George Allen's mouth. (JD - 7/21/2006 8:40:03 PM)
He was responding to a courageous gay high school student in Western Virginia who asked him why he couldn't get married.

He just can't marry someone he loves. (JD - 7/22/2006 5:04:24 PM)
He can only lie to some poor girl if he wants to get married.  That's a sanctified marriage.

Straight people can marry out of love.  Gay people can't.  You're right.  Its not complicated.
