Senate Dems Double GOP in June Fundraising
July 20, 2006
By: Phil Singer, DSCC

GOP June Fundraising Falls Surprisingly Short Of Expectations +óGé¼GÇ£ NRSC Claimed It Raised $12 Million At Bush Gala But Only Raised $4.8 Million For Entire Month

DSCC Builds On Cash Advantage Over NRSC For Fifth Straight Quarter

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) raked in $8.8 million in June, almost double the $4.8 million that its GOP counterpart brought in for the same month.  The DSCC has raised a whopping $73 million for the 2006 campaign cycle and has nearly $38 million in the bank, almost twice as much as what the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) has in its coffers.

+óGé¼+ôThroughout the country, people are looking for a new direction and are looking to the Democrats,+óGé¼-¥ DSCC Chairman Chuck Schumer said.  +óGé¼+ôOur fundraising success reflects a deep desire for change and recognition that the best way to get things back on track is by electing more Democrats to the Senate.+óGé¼-¥

The DSCC said that its cash on hand advantage will be a major asset going forward into the homestretch of the 2006 midterms.  +óGé¼+ôMore money in the bank means more resources to help spread our message of change,+óGé¼-¥ Schumer said.

In June, the NRSC raised only $4.8 million despite claiming that it had raised at least $7 million more at a single event with the President that month.  The media accounts following a Bush-headlined fundraiser for the NRSC and its House counterpart reported that the GOP Senate committee expected to bring in $12 million just from that one event.  [Washington Post, 6/20/06]

Labor Day is coming (kevinceckowski - 7/21/2006 9:03:21 AM)
and I think we will see a surge at that time. Don't know what the data is in the past about that, but one and all will be kicking it into HIGH gear at that time.  Maybe Bush is not the fund-raiser he use to be.  He use to say he lost his MOJO, or something. (where is that quote?)

When does Webb get some cash? (va.walter - 7/21/2006 9:44:00 AM)
Will the DSCC wait to see if he's still competitive in September before spending any money or will they start funnelling him the money now to keep him in the game?

Amen (David Campbell - 7/21/2006 10:14:38 AM)
Webb needs it now!

The next round of polls are very important. (va.walter - 7/21/2006 10:26:29 AM)
The last round showed signs that Webb was competitive (see Zogby) but also had some scary polls (see SurveyUSA).  Other polls put the race somewhere in the middle (Rasmussen).  If the next round of polls average out to a 15%+ lead for Allen I think the DSCC may stop focusing on Allen.  However, if they're <10%, money could start flowing.  Somewhere in between and I think party leaders continue with their wait and see approach.

But... (Arlington Mike - 7/21/2006 2:54:22 PM)
What makes me nervous is that there hasn't been the big high-profile outreach that would help Webb out in something like a poll.  His name isn't all over the airwaves, there hasn't been a massive mailing, etc.  The blog world is very aware of him, but I worry that too many Virginians still aren't.

I'd really like to see another "Take Back Virginia" tour, like he did around his announcement, that would take him to cities/towns all over the state for public events.  Get him out there on a stage w/ local Dems, drive some voters to wave signs, and make a major effort to get media there.

That's good to hear, but (phriendlyjaime - 7/21/2006 9:50:56 AM)
expect a terror alert, code orange to come our way.

Oh, and hurricane season is approaching, too.  No one will forget Katrina, and old wounds will be opened.  Plus, no matter what Bush does for any community to be hit in the future, NOLA will be a comparison.  So, it's a lose lose situation for Bush.

Bush's MOJO (kevinceckowski - 7/21/2006 11:33:39 AM)
is here:

http://www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com/archives/7285.html

May 2006  -  It's time for the White House to go on offense and "get our mojo back." Josh Bolten said Sunday in his first interview since taking over as the president's chief of staff.

Well, the funds are not coming in for Bush, Inc, that is for sure and by very dramatic levels.  Maybe people are catching on?  I hope so!

Can you all believe Allen spent nearly 2 million already!

Allen's spending. (va.walter - 7/21/2006 11:51:45 AM)
Allen having already spent $2 million needs to be taken very seriously.  First, it shows he's willing to spend spend spend to stay in office.  Second, much of his spending is for ad buys that haven't aired yet.  Third, he still has a lot of cash on hand to supplement those previous ad buys.  That means we can expect a constant (and increasing) stream of paid media from the Allen folks.  We need the DSCC to step up now with an ad buy in NOVA to get the Webb machine really rolling.

Some are sick of Allen's ads (kevinceckowski - 7/21/2006 1:44:23 PM)
and he keeps on sending them out.

Doesn't he know that he is P.Oing a lot of people ...like their private time at home with the family and ooops here is another ad of what I did when I was GOVERNOR.

Maybe he knows now for I am sure they are reading this web site daily.

Lawrence O'Donnell on 'The Majority Report' last night... (Loudoun County Dem - 7/21/2006 3:12:00 PM)
...said that the polls are changing so fast against incumbents that it is like a political 'prairie fire' and that any incumbent that is not 'significantly above 50% right now is going to lose'. He said that the wave has changed his thinking over the last month or so.

Webb Debate (kevinceckowski - 7/24/2006 7:55:41 AM)
will bring more funds this way for sure. The Virginia voters want to hear about real issues, not just the playbook answers that Allen is dishing out.  Way to go Jim!!

I love Webb's statement as quoted in the WaPo, C4, column2,
"Va Senator, Newcomer Debate Troops in Iraq, Economy", ...Webb stating about Allen,

"When two people agree with each other 97 percent of the time, one of them doesn't need a job."

What a shot across the proverbial bow.

House Democrats raised the most money of all six party campaign committees in June and grew their cash advantage over their GOP counterparts, a financial feat party strategists say is the product of building momentum in their effort to pick up 15 seats and win the majority in the November elections.
