LTE DN-R: Bush signs hope away

A letter to the editor of the Harrisonburg Daily News-Record was submitted today, in the wake of the unconscionable Bush veto of the stem cell bill.
I will diary all LTEs to the DN-R on RK for verification of authenticity in the event R. Cort Kirkwood decides to maim them, as he has done to my work in the past.
The letter, as written, is below the fold.
Today, George W. Bush defied the will of the United States Congress and 66 percent of Americans.
Today, George W. Bush denied hope to a huge number of Americans suffering from Parkinson's disease, diabetes, osteoperosis, spinal cord disease and injuries and a host of other debilitating afflictions.
He did so with a stroke of his pen, and he did so to pander to the religionist portion of his right wing base, by vetoing, for the first time in his Presidency, a bill passed by the United States Congress.
Why has George W. Bush never vetoed a bill? Because prior to today, he has attached a "signing statement" to most if not each of the bills he signs into law, stating he will disregard them as he sees fit.
But not this time. This time, he made a show of his first use of his veto power before the nation, preferring the favor of the followers of Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, James Dobson and Fred Phelps to giving hope to a huge number of Americans suffering from horrible physical infirmities.
Among the United States Senators voting with George W. Bush to favor the irrational religionists over the real needs of disabled Americans was Virginia's George Felix Allen.
George W. Bush's approval ratings are between 32 an 36 percent. Yet George Felix Allen has voted with President Bush 97 percent of the time in the Senate - when not otherwise occupied by his presumed run for President.
Clearly, neither George Bush nor George Felix Allen is concerned with serving the people of this country, or the Commonwealth of Virginia.
On a recent interview on television, George Felix Allen stated that when he disagrees with the President, he does so privately.
Does this represent you? Is this why we elect a man to serve our interests in Washington, DC?
When you go to the polls this November, please remember that to reject the divisive, hurtful Bush agenda, you must send his sycophant, George Felix Allen, back to the private sector, where he can no longer continue to work against the interests of not just the people of Virginia, but the people of America.
I urge you to send George Felix Allen home form Washington, and would ask for your vote for Jim Webb for Virginia's next US Senator this November.
