Kim Jong Il: "Crazy as a Sprayed Roach?"

According to the new National Journal Insider's Poll, excactly ZERO percent of Republican Senators and Representatives are "very optimistic" that "diplomacy alone will deter North Korea from expanding its nuclear capability."  A whopping 71% are "very" or "somwehat" pessimistic.  Here are a few classic comments:

*"Diplomacy is for rational regimes that make logical decisions and operate out of some reasonable sense of self-interest."

*"North Korea's elite is irrational, self destructive, and delusional. There are some problems that only a funeral will solve. This is one of them."

*"How do you deal with a regime that launched missiles as a form of blackmail?"

and my personal favorite...

"Kim Jong Il is as crazy as a sprayed roach."

Democrats are a bit more optimistic than Republicans on North Korea (I'm not sure why, exactly), with 54% "somewhat" or "very" pessimistic."  A few comments:

*"Kim Jong Il and his demented Groundhog Day mentality mean that there is a lot of talk but no action in getting North Korea to give up its pursuit of nuclear weapons."

*"Iraq is hurting our ability to deal with North Korea."

*"Assessing the potential of skillful diplomacy is one thing. Placing the odds on the efforts of the Bush administration, unfortunately, is quite another."

and my personal favorite...

"The Bush administration invaded the wrong country, ignored the real threats, mishandled the diplomacy. And, now, because of its incompetence, America is threatened."

So there you have it.  On North Korea, Republicans and Democrats seem to be in agreement:  we're in deep kimchi.  The only difference is that Democrats are, somewhat inexplicably, a bit more optimistic about the situation despite having no faith in the Bush Administration to respond effectively.

By the way, Kim Jong Il reportedly believes that some day, he will be replaced by a triplet.  To prevent that from happening, the Stalinist dictator has decreed that "All triplets in North Korea...[be] forcibly removed from parents after their birth and dumped in bleak orphanages."  And we're supposed to trust this guy with nuclear weapons?  Ee gads.

Nice!  :)

"Diplomacy is for rational regimes (RayH - 7/14/2006 10:36:21 AM)
... that make logical decisions and operate out of some reasonable sense of self-interest."

Where does that leave the Bush Administration?

The Clinton Influence (Teddy - 7/14/2006 10:42:45 AM)
When the Clinton crew turned over the federal government to the Bush crew it is my understanding that they told the incoming republicans that a deal with Korea was all wrapped up, and only required that the new President sign off on it. Naturally, the republicans were suspicious of anything the Clintons had done and immediately cut off negotiations. We were that close to a deal (which might not have been honored in the long run, true--- but it certainly would have been better than the present situation), They were already concentrating on Iraq, no doubt.

Therefore, any rational person can easily see that this present crisis is all the fault of Clinton... by the logic of our rational republican administration. How long will it be before somehow Rove/Cheney does blame Clinton?

Eat and be merry (seveneasypeaces - 7/14/2006 8:43:03 PM)
North Korea is starving.  They don't have good farm lands.  The thing they have that is valuable is nuclear (maybe).  Clinton understood this and made sure we helped feed them.  Bush cut the food off.  He undid everything Clinton ever created.  Slash and burn.  Bush wants this hungry desperate nation to act out.  Two idiot sons.

Ancient Egypt ruled so long partly because they also took care of their enemies.  During famine they delivered food to the borders.  Interdependence is the only way to peace.

Iraq and China are in the mix (Bubby - 7/14/2006 10:50:39 AM)
When the US invaded Iraq, it destroyed a huge investment by China to develop the Iraqi oil fields. Not only were fortunes lost, but a key new oil source for China went away.

China could make Kim go away today.  But it is better to keep the NeoCons hopping, skipping and dodging their way around security threats.  That way, China can contain the empire-building proclivities of the Bush folks.

Lowell I am Shocked and Appalled (David M - 7/14/2006 1:14:46 PM)
that you would refer to Cockroaches and Kim Jong Il in the same sentence. This is a scandalous slur and an insult to cockroaches everywhere. For eons we have suffered under the burden of specieist slurs and bigotry. It is only in the last 10 million generations that we have achieved some sort or parity with homo sapiens and we will not let the hard work that has been gained since the publication of Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis.

It is for this reason that we demand the immediate retraction of your hurtful and spiteful comparison of cockroaches to Kim Jong Il...it will not be long before you are comparing us to other ill-spirited, belligerent, and unwise leaders of your race and we cannot tolerate further hate speech against our kind.

As the new Netroots Coordinator for the Jim Webb US Senate campaign I am shocked at your callousness.

Blah, blah, blah...I am speaking like a Republican.
