Allen votes against homeland security funding for Northern Virginia

Did George Allen just lose the NOVA vote?

For the second time in two years, George Allen voted to weaken anti-terrorist programs in Virginia. Allen opposed restoring the funding for Northern Virginia's homeland security programs to 2005 levels, leaving the Commonwealth vulnerable to another terrorist attack. Virginia was one of two states attacked on 9/11.

Read more here, but looks like Allen just rubberstamped Bush's slashing of homeland security funding for the DC area, including Virginia counties home to the Pentagon, Iwo Jima, the Arlington Cemetery, the CIA, and various military installations. Fairfax, Loudon, Prince William, Arlington, Alexandria, and the rest of Northern Virginia just got the rough end of Allen's rubberstamp.

Colbert called it (mosquitopest - 7/13/2006 3:55:57 PM)
Colbert told Jim Webb that Allen was "dumb as a post."

I think Colbert reported this correctly.

You are correct. n/t (phriendlyjaime - 7/13/2006 4:24:20 PM)

Is Allen this stupid? (Dan - 7/13/2006 4:19:09 PM)
Votes to lock up seniors suffering from high drug costs, votes against minimum wage, votes against security funding in his OWN STATE!

What's next, will he vote against the environm...oh wait, that's already happened.  Hmm, who the hell does this guy represent anyway?

Webb needs to keep slicing this guy apart.

Oh LOOK! (phriendlyjaime - 7/13/2006 4:24:48 PM)
Dan's right too!!!!  :)

Know Senator No (seveneasypeaces - 7/13/2006 4:33:43 PM)
There should be a flyer about this.  George Allen DOES NOT Represent Virginia.  What senator would vote against their own state.  This one!!!!

And now he wants to make criminals out of our elders.

How can any self-respecting Virginian ever vote for him knowing this.  We have to make sure they do know.

George Allen Does NOT Represent Virginians or Virginia

What about Hampton Roads? (elevandoski - 7/13/2006 4:41:13 PM)
I remember in January this year reading about how Hampton Roads got passed over for Urban Homeland Security funds.  We apparently get passed over because the Feds' criteria in measuring populations.  They can't add Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Hampton, Newport News together, so we lose.  Just like all the various jurisdictions in NoVa add up to qualify for at least some funding, HR should add up similarily.  But, no, Relma Rake and Felix don't do anything to fix it.  This is now 2 years in a row we don't get one buck.

This vote is being taken out of context.  As we all know, the current formula is not risk adjusted and leads to money going from NYC and NOVA to Omaha.  THIS IS WRONG.  The amendment you're talking about simply continued and increased this problem.  This was a bad amendment and should have been voted against.  Instead, they should offer more money but make the formula risk adjusted.  I know the blogosphere doesn't like voting nuances but I get kind of annoyed with both sides taking votes out of context.

Nice spin (Rob - 7/14/2006 9:37:17 AM)
did he or did he not vote against an increase in homeland security funding for northern virginia?

and if there's a better way or a more comprehensive fix, show me Allen's leadership on this issue.  I'd be interested to see if he's introduced legislation on this before voting against this funding.

Well... (Craig - 7/13/2006 5:46:29 PM)
Fairfax County, Arlington County, Fairfax City, Alexandria, and Falls Church didn't vote for him in 2000, so what does he owe them?

Worst VA Senator since William Scott.
