George Allen is a snuffing fool

From Roll Call via Thinkprogress:
Good for Sen. George [Felix] Allen (R-Va.)! The GOP presidential aspirant from Virginia might be trying to kick his nasty little habit that involves spitting toxic, black gunk into a plastic foam cup. And the best part is: He doesn't even have to give up smokeless tobacco!

Allen has been spotted in hearings and even on the Senate floor dipping and, yes, dear heavens, spitting into a plastic foam cup. But lately ... Allen has been enjoying Camel Snus and Stonewall Hard Snuff, both of which get Allen around that unbecoming spitting problem.

Noted without comment.

Life in the Shadow (seveneasypeaces - 7/11/2006 6:15:38 PM)
I would imagine that it was hard growing up around real talent.  Had to be difficult.  A driven father surrounded by others of great import.  But that doesn't excuse his bobble-headedness.

Interestingly enough (or not, (phriendlyjaime - 7/11/2006 6:30:53 PM)
I feel that we can look at George W. Bush and make the same comment.  The man grew up in a home in the shadow of his brother, was born to a woman filled with hate and disdain for others, lost a sister and then never attended a funeral, and failed in many of his personal and professional ventures.  He had a drug and alcohol problem that definitely took a toll on him, yet I never hear much about his path to sobriety.  It seems to me that like a man who fought on a battlefield and faced deadly obstacles, rehabilitation would be an important and life changing experience for George W. Bush.  Where are the true and heroic tales of personal success, through good times and bad, striving for greatness and overcoming hurdles?

I just don't get that vibe from either Georges.  I wonder how long America will continue to reward wealthy white men, born into a mold of self importance and a holier than thou attitude.

Let's ignore this guy.  He doesn't recognize the game being stopped while in sudden death and the trophy grabbed as if won.  Then the same sleasy people in Florida are put into position in Ohio (Blackwell) and the right to vote is trampled all over again. This is the most manufactured resident of the white house we've ever had.

If you think I'm going to become impressed by being molded into the Presidency by Karl Rove, think again. He's failed in everything he's done, including the Presidency. Historians are going to note this guy as a monumental failure.

No wonder he likes Barb (Rebecca - 7/11/2006 9:51:05 PM)
Judging by the distain for people this person is showing, I'd say he's in good company with Barb. Just read what her own children and her "friends" say about her. That's how we have all learned.

Bush needed the Supreme Court to make him president the first time. His approval for his job performance is in the toilet and he needed people like Ken Blackwell to win the second time.

He would be ashamed if he had a conscience.

RE: Mmm . . . Mmm . . . (JPTERP - 7/12/2006 1:04:02 AM)
Source for "woman filled with hate and disdain for others" I seem to recall is the New Republic . . .

https://ssl.tnr.com/p/docsub.mhtml?i=20060508&s=lizza050806

In reference to G.W.'s "personal success," the only thing he's done is win the popularity contests.  Credit stage manager Karl Rove for the sales pitch and the carefully pitched product.  Take away Karl Rove and G.W.'s still losing congressional elections in midland Texas because he sounds like a Yalie who spends too much time summering in Kennebunkport.

On his own merits G.W. has been unexceptional by almost any measure as a both a b'nessman and public servant.  He isn't a dolt, but he isn't a genius either.

Of course, some conservatives are just as liable as some liberals to let the smoke get in their eyes when a famous family name is involved.  The Bushes are to red states what the Kennedys are to some of the blues.  I can't say I have any great love for political family dynasties of either political stripe . . . .

Take away the Bush name, money, and influence, and G.W. is getting reamed for forgetting to put the T.P.S. covers on some boss's productivity report.  No shame in that.  But nothing to take much pride in either.

I agree. (thaddaeus toad - 7/11/2006 8:57:51 PM)
Anyone who would keep her son from knowing his sister was dying of LEUKEMIA, and, upon her death, fail to have a funeral for her, is a person so vile it boggles the mind.  Add to that the fact that she said those living in the squalor and misery of the Superdome were better off because they were disadvantaged anyway.  To wit; "this is working quite well for them."  That is not person, it is a pig.  She is a money grubbing pig who believes her own power and wealth are more vital to this country than the lives of its people.  Now, Conservatives love her out of envy.  They all wish they were as rich and powerful as she, so they too could say "fuck off" to ordinary Americans.

Unless you've lost a child to leukemia, where do you get off? (Roger Jarrell - 7/12/2006 8:42:10 AM)
"Anyone who would keep her son from knowing his sister was dying of LEUKEMIA, and, upon her death, fail to have a funeral for her, is a person so vile it boggles the mind."

Really, really....of all the insentive comments on this blog, this one begs to be culled out.

Unless you have children, unless you've lost one to leukemia, or have faced loss on this magnitude, you have no right to cast judgment on Barbara Bush for the loss of her child.

I have some own personal experience in this area.  I was handicapped as a child...and the circumstances surrounding this were kept from my sister for a period of time.  Parents often do this to protect their children.

And, obviously, she had her own grief.

For you to politicize something like this reflects poorly on you.

RE: Throwing mechanics (JPTERP - 7/12/2006 12:32:20 AM)
If this was a video shot you would note that Allen's left foot remains planted, while he swings his hips and steps forward with his right foot and then heaves the ball a full 15 yards as if he was doing the shot put.  Even the great George Allen, Sr., R.I.P., would have to admit shame-faced that his boy never learned to toss a pigskin like a man.

have you ever had a torn rotator cuff? (Roger Jarrell - 7/12/2006 8:44:35 AM)
My own father was known to throw 70 yards plus until he was around 45 y.o.  As he got older, he rotator cuff became more and more damaged.  And, his throwing motion closely resembled what you see here.

Then your father (DukieDem - 7/12/2006 8:55:10 AM)
Throws like a girl. I hope your father's rotator cuff surgery didn't drive up my insurance premiums. Why should I have to pay for what your father did? Sounds like socialized medicine to me. Take responsibility for your own actions, and get the government out of my pocket!!

Gee its fun to be Republican sometimes.

RTD RIP (seveneasypeaces - 7/12/2006 9:13:41 AM)
I worked the Reston Festival this weekend (walking through the crowd with a big Webb sign and handing out stickers). There were several of us doing this.  I realize this is the 8th district but it is the part of the 8th that is stuck in the middle of the military industrial complex (lockheeds et al.).  There was a LOT of interest in Webb.  People stopped me to talk, vendors wanted to know more.  I woke up a vendor from Bristol who will now have lots to think about.  She approached me.  She votes and is now very interested in Jim Webb.

Twenty-something young men were cheering Webb.  They know who has their best interest at heart and it ain't felix.  It was a very nice two days.  There will be lots more outreaches.  I did have a couple stop me to ask about his stand on the environment.  I said it hasn't been formalized but that he has heavy environmental people close to him, that we all are environmental.  They will vote too.

Like I said before, Jim Webb has what can't be bought.  US!

my father has terminal cancer (Roger Jarrell - 7/12/2006 9:24:43 AM)
Thanks for the comment. I really appreciate your concern. While he never got the rotator cuff repaired, he does have a bone marrow disorder called multiple myeloma -- he's terminal.

If we had socialized medicine in this country, he'd be dead by now.  Thankfully, he has great insurance...and I doubt your premiums would be effected.

I'd love to talk health care with you but it's obvious to me that you only want to insult my father.

Give me a Break (DukieDem - 7/12/2006 9:45:10 AM)
Well you have my regrets on the passing of your father, invoking a victim is the saddest form of political posturing. Let's follow your reasoning - George Allen throws like a girl - you feel bad because thats how your father threw - your father died of an unrelated illness - hence mocking George Allen is insulting your father's death. Give me a break.

Here are your words, live with them (Roger Jarrell - 7/12/2006 10:02:10 AM)
I don't think you read very well.  First, he isn't dead and can be seen by what I have written.  He has terminal cancer but thanks to modern medicine he is hanging in there.  I took great offense by your comments.

But let's restate what has transpired.

I asked whether you have ever had a rotator cuff injury...because older men often get that problem -- particularly ex-athletes.  I mentioned my father as an example only by way of invoking a personal example.  John Elway, for example, doesn't throw very well any more either...but I suppose you'd say he throws like a girl too.

You then said, "your father...Throws like a girl. I hope your father's rotator cuff surgery didn't drive up my insurance premiums. Why should I have to pay for what your father did? Sounds like socialized medicine to me. Take responsibility for your own actions, and get the government out of my pocket!!"

You then presumed that my father had rotator cuff surgery (which he did not) and that he has caused your insurance premiums to increase.  Following that, you made that comment that he/me should take responsibilty for our own actions and that it "sounds like socialized medicine to me."

Your statements, and those of many here, show that you'd rather make personal attacks on those who disagree with you.

Frankly, I don't care what you think of me but we you start making comments regarding my father...you best not cash a check with your mouth that your butt can't cash.

My apologies (DukieDem - 7/12/2006 10:13:44 AM)
On misreading the quote about your father. Frankly I find it hilarious that a grow man wants to pick a fight over an internet blog. However if it's going to make you feel like a big man to come get your ass kicked my someone half your age, give me a call anytime you want. My number is 310-6128 and I live in Richmond.

Onto the rest of your statement:
Thank God for modern medicine that your father is able to hang on. It's funny you once again invoke modern medicine, because your beloved megachurches and many in your party decline to respect the theory of evolution (the jury is still out I suppose). Well, all modern medicine is based on the theory of evolution, so without it, your father and many people that are close to me wouldn't be receiving the help they do. But hey, why talk about the facts when you can attack me for your father's condition?

Secondly, I beleive John Elway had a much more accomplished and lengthy career than George Allen, so I think his problems throwing a football are more understandable. I don't beleive throwing the pigskin around at a rally is cause for such a threatening condition.

Finally, my comments about socialized medicine were meant in jest to what the standard GOP attack line is regarding health care. If your father is stuggling through insurance policies that aren't getting him the best care, frankly he deserves it, and we need to have a health care system that does all it can to help our citizens lead healthy, productive lives.

You can run into a shell and call foul when I refute your statements, or you can stand on your own two feet. I have no personal vendetta against you, but you crying about personal attacks everytime one of your statements gets questioned is laughable.

Here's where I draw the line.... (Roger Jarrell - 7/12/2006 10:24:09 AM)
I'll gladly debate you on a wide array of issues.  However, here's your lesson on debating.  Ad hominem attacks always fail as a debating tactic.

In a sense, I "opened the door" by invoking my father's rotator cuff but only did so by way of example to point out that older men don't throw very well.  However, this did not give you license to then state that my father throws like a sissy.

You have much to learn.  In time, you'll likely get there with a little work.  However, in terms of debating style, it is better to keep your points more focused.

Your syllogism regarding OPEC, etc. was streach.  You don't do yourself any favors by going that far afield in your argument.

RE: Throwing Mechanics, Part II (JPTERP - 7/12/2006 9:22:39 PM)
What your dad did is remarkable.  I understand Major Harris the standout for WVU could chuck the ball 80 yards in his prime.  Brett Farve and Vick I believe are somewhere in the 70 yard range.  This is with a football that has a smaller girth and is a little lighter than the standard issue NFL ball from 25 years ago.

I don't know if Allen, Jr. has had a rotator cuff injury or not--his throwing motion is still a little dainty.  In and of itself this would be irrelevant; however, Allen has built his political career around an "ubermanly" image.

If I was a political consultant I would recommend that Allen study and master Brett Favre's unorthodox javelin style throwing motion.  That says tough guy.

Screw Brett Favre.... (Roger Jarrell - 7/13/2006 2:02:32 PM)
go with the John Elway motion.  More torque involved.  Head titled slightly left....creates more torque.  Favre mimics Elway -- but isn't quite there.

Randall Cunningham had 80 yard plus capability --but his throwing motion took too long.  He wasn't exactly Mario with the quick release.

All torque, no touch (JPTERP - 7/13/2006 6:43:08 PM)
Elway was just a slinger and a scrambler (and a great QB).  Favre was a slinger and a scrambler who could throw a sweet dump pass on screens with a little flick of the wrist (and was also a great QB).  Past tense for Favre is intended.

Cunningham was another great one--his motion was one of the smoothest--but like you say it probably would have benefited from tighten.

Two completely unrelated side notes:  Cunningham was one of the few guys in NFL history who could punt just as well as he threw.  Remember his 80+ yarder when the Eagles punter went down in one game?  He also would have won a Super Bowl ring too if Brian Billick hadn't stuck with his multi-million dollar blunder Elvis Grbac in 2001.  Cunningham was no longer in his prime, but he was a perfect fit for an extremely well-balanced team.

It's fun to watch Kaine fans (I.Publius - 7/12/2006 2:49:36 PM)
criticize ANYONE -- particular somebody who was a Div. I-A scholarship quarterback -- for "throwing like a girl."

Y'all have obviously not seen Kaine attempt anything remotely athletic, have you?  Almost, but not quite as bad as when Senator Kerry tried to throw a football in 2004.  Now THAT was a pathetic display of patrician roots.  Kaine's not quite that bad, but he's damn close.

Or maybe you all just can't get over the fact that ol' Webby got his ass kicked by Oliver North.  That one must really burn your hides.  LOL.

the Webbies claim that the North/Webb fight was fixed.... (Roger Jarrell - 7/12/2006 3:19:23 PM)
and they want to score to be recalculated.  Maybe some hanging chads were at fault.  Lol.

Webb-North (DukieDem - 7/12/2006 8:00:04 PM)
I for one can't stand the fact that Webb lost a boxing match that took place 20 years before I was born and 40 years before I had heard of him.

You see its funny because its ironic. Allen trumps being a big football guy with his analogies and such, yet throws like a girl. If Webb for all his military credentials couldn't fire rifle, it'd be the same thing. When you set the topic, make sure you meet the standards or you look foolish.

As a boxing fan.... (Roger Jarrell - 7/13/2006 9:27:44 AM)
and as a former boxer myself, I'd love to see to old geezers...North and Webb...trade leather again.

Two jarheads...throwing punches and reliving past glories...just think of the drama.  Lol.

He was the Greatest! (seveneasypeaces - 7/13/2006 11:24:19 AM)
I commend you.  You went from a handicapped childhood to becoming a boxer.  Not that I'm interested in people hurting each other but that is impressive and unusual.  (I did LOVE Ali for his consciousness and heart.)

Anyway, in a sense they have been in the same arena.  The book Nightingale Song is about 5 naval graduates. Jim Webb was one and the only one that really looked like a hero. Ollie North needed a lot of strokes from his teachers. Poindexter, McCain and one other.  Read the book for a look at these men from the same perspective.  It is a study of what becomes of naval graduates.

My short lived boxing career.... (Roger Jarrell - 7/13/2006 11:40:18 AM)
Seven,
I have not read Nightingale Song but am very much familiar with the fact that North had to overcome an injury to box.

I boxed at VMI...in fact...we all were required to box in our "Rat"...or plebe year.

My own injury was the result of legge perthes disease.  It's a disease resulting froma  hip injury at age 10.  Basically, avascular necrosis of the right ball joint.

This has all come full circle because I now need major hip surgery at MCV in Richmond in early August.  I'll be out of commission for a few weeks.  The ball joint is now diseased with arthritis and necrosis.  The ball joint has grown too big for the socket...and needs to be trimmed down.  It's either this or a hip replacement.

So, no more motorcycles, tennis, or racquetball for me.

Military schools are great systems.  You should read "Lords of Discipline" sometime.

Path to Recovery (seveneasypeaces - 7/13/2006 2:22:21 PM)
I'm so glad they will be able to help you!  Not familiar with the disease but articulation has to be painful.  I hope you have a good insurance and time passes quickly for you.  Eat lots of fresh foods to speed healing.

This makes me think about all the injuries people are suffering in Iraq.  Will they ever get the amount of care they will need. We get irritated with a crowded doctor's office.  What is it like for them there.

Not to demean military school, but some might be interested in this story.  A brother of a very good friend went to VMI.  His father made him go.  It was in the late 70's.  On graduation day he began taking his uniform apart (as he wore it) and threw it away, piece by piece.  He took great pleasure in each gesture.  He did what his father wanted, he got a good education and then he let it go thread by thread. Was a completion for him that he waited a long time for.

Anyway Roger, be sure to get lots of Vit. C foods and even some cod liver oil (the Vit. A is good for healing too).  During recovery, practice moving in your mind (the inner game).  It helps really.

thanks for the kind thoughts... (Roger Jarrell - 7/13/2006 4:07:16 PM)
I kept my VMI uniforms...but I can certainly appreciate how your friend's brother approached his on graduation day.

On the subject of health care, this is an issue that I will address at length in the future, if and when, I get my blog fully function (and, I have time to write).

As someone who has faced heart disease at age 30...and now is facing major hip surgery, I have a lot of experience with our health care system.  As both a lawyer and as a former insurance rep, I honestly believe that the biggest failure of the health insurance industry comes from the servicing end.

This issue has been debated since 1992 when I first got into politics.  Candidates then talked about the need to standardize forms....and to-date...nothing has happened.

We can all debate the pro's and con's of universal coverage...but this much is clear: we have the finest medical care in the world.  If I had lived in Canada at the time I had a blocked artery repaired, I would be dead now.  I'd be dead because I would have been "blown off" because of my age.

And, who knows where I'd be with my hip situation.

I hope and pray that our soldiers receive the finest care available. They deserve it.

Finally, I practice law during the week in Virginia's neighbor -- the State of West Virginia.  In the past, I have represented doctors and other medical entitities.  Because of increasing insurance costs, many doctors are now leaving the state.  West Virginia cannot afford to lose any more.

Without major tort reform, West Virginia stands to lose a generation of medical professionals.

Then and Now (seveneasypeaces - 7/13/2006 5:49:00 PM)
I have a larger view of medicine.  If they would stop controlling and put more into prevention and wellness people would be healthier.  It is a fact that in cities where doctors have gone on strike the death rate goes down.  Now in your case medicine shines, for trauma yes.  But wellness is not about which manufactured chemical you take.  Food is medicine.  The AMA is a big club and it has the ability to ruin careers for not following protocols.

We may have the finest medical care but we are not the healtiest nation and there are 32 other industrial nations with less birth defects per capita.  Yes, we are great with the aftereffects, but we are not superior in wellness.  Far from it.

I hope that one day you will also think in terms of the Iraqis who are suffering so horribly now because of our shock and awe and the results.  We will never get taken seriously in the world if we only think it is our troops who are suffering.

Trans fatty acids (transmutated fats like margarine and hydrogenated oils) are the cause of the heart diseases.  These transmutted fats damage arteries, the body then sends in plague to repair but it builds up.  Also, if you have a heart issue you want to take B vitamins (B1 particularly) to keep your homocysteine levels low.  Or eat foods high in B's like sprouted sunflower seeds!  As Hippocrates said Let Food Be Your Medicine.  See an Asian practitioner (Chinese medicine), they use a lot of foods for medicine. Chaw on some seaweed!

A century ago heart was not a killer.  It is No. 1 now.  What has changed is our diet, the processed, transmutted fats and nutrionally devoid foods.  People had a lot less leisure so it isn't about that.  Their foods were more nutritious, their air and water were cleaner, the foods were local, and their hearts were stronger.

Good luck with your surgery.  If you were a minority or poor you might not fair so well in this country.  So enjoy it.  nancy

in my instance... (Roger Jarrell - 7/13/2006 6:07:56 PM)
the heart disease is the result of genetics.  At of the age of 30, I was a long-distance runner, my cholesterol was at low levels, and I am not a smoker.

My diet has never been a factor.  But, I took part in a Duke University study on genetics as it relates to heart disease.  In the next few years, we'll see major strides on this front.

There is a certain village in Italy...where the villagers are completely immune to heart disease.  Study has shown that their cholesterol is over 400...they eat terribly.  While they drink red wine (which can be helpful), studies have shown that a recessive gene has made them immune to heart disease.  Medical researches are on the verge of unlocking this mystery.

As to innocent Iraqis, my heart goes out to them all -- both those killed in the conflict or tortured by Saddam Hussein.

Just so you'll know, I'm not such a hardass as you might think.  I represent indigent families pro bono.

And, my sister (a nurse practitioner) devotes major amounts of her time to "Doctors Without Borders" and other such endeavors.

Conservatives and liberals all want the same things -- equality, peace, social justice, etc.  The debate is how we get there.

Unfortunately, some liberals think that conservatives reflexively want to screw the poor.  And, some conservatives reflexively think that liberals want to spike trees while enroute to the perform abortions -- all the while burning the American flag.

The more that we can get off stereotypes and soundbites, the easier it will be to forge common ground.

Wine is Fine (seveneasypeaces - 7/13/2006 7:48:12 PM)
Cholesterol is a myth.  People with higher cholesterols live longer than people with low.  The crazy numbers being pushed on people using fear are causing depressions.  As the numbers have dropped the depression meds have increased.  The body makes its own and must have it.  Every cell and certainly the brain need cholesterol.  The key is real food fat as opposed to trans mutated fats.  Real food fat actually encases aberrant cells (cancer).  Look at the long lived mountain people, they drink salt/butter drinks (real salt, raw  butter).

Of course genetics are inherited but so are eating habits and the damage from those habits.

The meds being used to lower cholesterol are causing serious memory loss.  Stay away from the "cor" meds.  They are very destructive.  One of the former astronaut doctors is hot on this issue.  He wrote the book The Cholesterol Myth.  http://www.westonaprice.org is a good place to start.  When in doubt, eat the way people have eaten for centuries, and wine is included.  It is fermented.  Fermentation (slow foods) is old traditional eating.  I could talk for days.  Raw organic apple cider vinegar was the first medicine of Hippocrates.  Fermented food/medicine.

If one wants to raise or lower cholesterol a castor oil pack over the liver will help.  The liver will make what it needs.  240-260 used to be normal.  Look what they have done to people.  Sex hormones are made from cholesterol too.  What a mess.  Stick with the old traditions.  Drink red wine!!!

What a goober (sndeak - 7/11/2006 9:37:04 PM)
Felix is such a Howdy-Doody Goober.

Back to the subject at hand; i.e. spitting tobacco: (LAS - 7/11/2006 10:27:20 PM)
Eeeeeewwwwwww...

People chew tobacco... (thegools - 7/12/2006 12:21:24 AM)
People dip snuff...so I don't really care if GFA does either.  This is not really news, afterall tobacco is LEGAL.

Yeah butt (seveneasypeaces - 7/12/2006 12:27:18 AM)
who wants to kiss an ashtray.

Don't get me wrong... (thegools - 7/12/2006 12:36:38 AM)
..I'd prefer not to kiss that sort of mouth.  I did date a heavy smoker once, and I didn't mind that much.  She was hot and I was Really into her.

That said: I know someone who made himself quit smoking by putting all of his spent butts in a water filled, gallon jar that was placed on his dresser. IT WAS NASTY!

Maybe GFA could do the same and put all his tobacco spit in a big jar and put it somewhere where he has to see it- A Lot. (Dinner table, on a dresser, on his desk....)  I am sure his health would improve....

In Other News (DukieDem - 7/12/2006 12:39:22 AM)
For all the talk about how Webb's campaign is in shambles, take a look at Allen's website. The two lead stories they have up are "Richmond Times Dispatch can't decipher Webb's position on Iraq" and "New Poll Shows Allen with 19 point lead".

On the first point, its newsworthy that the RTD is bashing Webb? The same paper that has Allen's congressional Eric Cantor's wife on its board? This is supposed to be something newsworthy? Right Wing Propaganda machine produces Right Wing Lies? As I think Jamie said, in other news, Dog Bites Man, Beer is good.

And the 19 point lead...the poll came out TWO WEEKS AGO. And the flaws in this poll are well documented - only 3% undecided? - and they run contrary to every other poll out in the field. Didn't feel like posting the poll with Felix up only 5, did we Dick Wad(hams)?

If the Webb campaign did stuff like this, the Right would have a field day talking about how aimless Webb's campaign is.
