True Story!

I am currently in Charlottesville for a seminar and forum on assessments and taxation.  I went to Gold's Gym on Hydrolic Rd last night with a travel pass which I got at my Gold's in Arlington.  After riding the bike while reading a book, I sweated like a pig and went to the front desk to get a towel.  At all the Arlington Gold's Gyms, towels are available gratis for all members.  At this Gold's, you have to rent them for a dollar.
My gym stuff was stored in a locker, and so I asked the lady at the service desk could I please get a towel and pay the rent when I left?  She discussed my request with the manager who said "No; you can leave a driver's license or credit card as security", which were both stored in the locker.  "Can I give you this book as security?" I asked.  They agreed, so I put up my book as collateral for a towel.

When I was ready to leave, I gave the manager a dollar and asked for my book.  "This is a very good book", he commented.  I said "Yes; did you know that the author is running for Senator of Virginia?"  He didn't, having moved to Virginia recently.  I suggested that if registered to vote in Virginia before October 7, 2006, he could vote for the author on November 7.  He said he would.

The book was "Born Fighting".

Ingrid, you should go on tour (Eric - 7/11/2006 8:10:48 AM)
and bring that book.  What a great way to drum up interest (and hopefully votes) for Webb.

Oh, and I hope you charged them a dollar in rent for allowing them to read your book :-)

On tour (Ingrid - 7/11/2006 4:26:37 PM)
with book and guitar!  I would love to do that, and belt out the Webb campaign song I co-wrote with my friend Sue...

Qualifications for the US Senate (Bubby - 7/11/2006 8:30:19 AM)
Wouldn't it be great if Virginia had a Senator that had the proven ability to research and analyze dense bits of information and make reasoned accurate judgements about the best course of action?

Someone that had looked deeply and spoken strongly about the folly of invading Iraq - before it happened?

Someone that had a fine job and a good life, but determined that a lack of Executive leadership, and poor Senate representation compelled him to step forward to service?

James Webb.

(Has incumbent Senator George Felix Allen ever researched and written about anything? Something? )

Ability to Analyze Bits of Information (Curlew - 7/11/2006 9:57:28 AM)
We plan on getting one capable of doing just that.  He should be in his new office in early January 2007.

Nah, (The Ditzy Democrats - 7/11/2006 12:05:32 PM)
Allen's learning to swallow, instead of spitting.

Tobacco, people, tobacco.

Minds out of the gutters, now. :)

A Question (DukieDem - 7/11/2006 9:29:59 AM)
Can we go to a state board of elections office and get a dozen voter registration forms so when we find such potential voters, we can hand them a form on the spot? Or is this something the campaign office can do?

We can (Nichole - 7/11/2006 12:00:43 PM)
We can do that... Robin and Jeff are working with that if you want to help :)

That's a great idea.

Registering voters (Debby - 7/11/2006 2:55:42 PM)
Anyone can get forms from the local registrar and assist someone with completing the form.  It's best to ask them to do it while you're there to check it over...people always seem to leave out something or forget to sign.  Offer to turn it in for them, again, so it won't be forgotten.  I carry a stack of forms with me in the car, and never mind returning them to the correct registrar to be sure they get there.  Just be sure you're registering Webb voters and not the opponent!

Class (kevinceckowski - 7/11/2006 9:54:46 AM)
So, this was all planned, no towel, lend the book as deposit. You know now to work a room Ingrid. kc.

Another Reason (David M - 7/11/2006 10:21:24 AM)
that Ingrid is everybody's favorite elected official in Arlington. Not only does she have grace and chutzpah, but she knows how to bring others to seeing her side in the face of adversity.

Great story, great book, great candidate! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the compliment, David... n/t (Ingrid - 7/11/2006 4:27:49 PM)

Great Diary (pitin - 7/11/2006 12:32:29 PM)
One vote at a time, that's how we're going to turn VA blue permanently.

And I am in Williamsburg for a seminar (teacherken - 7/11/2006 12:53:43 PM)
on separation of church and state.  We are off until Thursday at 9 AM.

If you contacted me, we could have dinner in Charlottesville or someplace in between

email is kber at earthlink dot net

you should have my cell  but I am not going to post it  (duh)

let me know

Sorry, I have plans (Ingrid - 7/11/2006 3:03:24 PM)
with some of my colleagues.  I forgot to mention that I wrote on the "freedom wall" (is that what it's called?) on the down town mall in C'ville.  What a wonderful idea!  I wrote one line about ten times on every side of the wall.  Guess what I wrote... :-)

Great Story + Class (Alicia - 7/11/2006 4:13:48 PM)
I'd also like to congratulate Ingrid on making lemonade out of lemons.
I think most may have felt a little hassled with the $1 deposit for the towel and the back and forth that ensued - but Ingrid handled it with class AND turned someone on to Webb.
Perfect.

Funny, I was just there today, (I.Publius - 7/12/2006 6:00:28 PM)
as a visiting member, and there was no charge for a towel.  And none of the staff I spoke to had any knowledge of this actually occurring.

But it's a great story anyway.  ;-)

Mmm, I was there today also... (Ingrid - 7/12/2006 11:04:14 PM)
Were you the guy who needed my help with your bench press?  The one who had a problem lifting 95 pounds?  The gentleman at the counter actually recognized me from Monday's book incident.  Btw: it was a pleasure helping you with your workout!

:) (Kathy Gerber - 7/13/2006 3:08:40 AM)
Look, from now on when you all come to Charlottesville, please let me know and maybe we can go to lunch?

Will do! (Ingrid - 7/13/2006 2:05:44 PM)
Let me announce here that I will be in Roanoke the first week of August.  If anybody here on RK lives in the Roanoke area, please let me know, and maybe we can meet for lunch...

Throwing the book at George Allen (Kindler - 7/12/2006 10:10:22 PM)
This Senate race is pretty well-matched, if you think about it:

Webb -- wrote 6 books in his life (so far)
Allen -- has probably read about 6 books in his life

Can I recommend... (Kathy Gerber - 7/13/2006 3:11:25 AM)
Foxes in the Henhouse, too?  It's much more powerful than I expected.
