Paul Hackett's "Statesman-like Act"

A "statesman-like act."  That's how Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) Chairman, Sen. Chuck Schumer, described Paul Hackett's endorsement yesterday of his former rival, Rep. Sherrod Brown (D-OH).  That's very true.  It's also very true that this is great news for the Democrats' chances of defeating Sen. Mike DeWine (R) in November.

Hackett's change of heart, which he says came while he was mowing the lawn (ah, the things you think about when you're bored out of your mind!) comes almost exactly 5 months after Hackett dropped out.  At the time, Hackett had asserted that he was pressured to quit by national Democrats.  Now, it looks like the hatchet has been buried.

A "statesman-like act," indeed.  To quote Sen. Schumer, "This is the kind of unity that the DSCC has encouraged in Democratic campaigns, and that will help pave the way for victory in 2006."

By the way, let's not forget our own "statesman-like act" right here in Virginia; Harris Miller's gracious concession speech, in which he said, "Jim Webb is going to be a great United States senator, and I'm going to do everything I can to help him get there."  Nice.

Paul Hackett came to Louisville during the Andrew Horn primary race in May.  He was a class act then.  He had taken a hard lick and he just got on his feet and started working for another guy he'd been in Iraq with.  In many ways Paul is responsible for this Veteran's movement.  He was the first one to attract attention for veterans running in 2004, and was the first one to get shot down in 2006.  I'm sure Paul will have a secure political future.  If he doesn't have one in Ohio, we'd be glad to move Hackett to Kentucky.  Good for Paul and hats off to Harris Miller who showed so much class and good will toward Jim Webb.  Lots of winners this morning!

endorsed. I hope in the future he runs again.  I believe he dropped out in February.  What a sad day that was indeed. Yes, the Dems are united and we are going to sweep and clean and rearrange desks and take the committees once again. kc.

given the total inertia of the brown campaign, it would probably be wise for brown to ask Hackett to fundraise for him.
