At the Jefferson Jackson Day dinner in Richmond last night, Congressman Jim Moran spoke of Mark Warner and also of what makes us Democrats.  I n a hard hitting, emotional speech, Moran pounded home several main points:

  • Mark Warner "rescued this state from a right-wing ideological disaster."
  • Virginia's previous governor, Republican "No Car Tax" Jim Gilmore, was "worse than imcompetent" in that he launched a deliberate attempt to force Virginia to renege on its commitments to education, healthcare, and the needy.
  • Mark Warner took over this mess but did not "make excuses" or "whine" -- "he acted."
  • "What Mark Warner has done for our state is exactly what the Democratic Party needs to do for our country."  (hint hint)
  • In contrast, President Bush is assaulting Social Security while turning the huge surplus he inherited from President Clinton into a massive deficit.
  • We Democrats rescued the world from Nazism, Fascism and Communism in the past century, largely based on our commitment to the ideals and values of Democracy
  • "Farmers, factory workers, the middle class and the underclass -- they are the Democratic Party and they look to us for leadership."
