Last night at the Starks

Last night Andy Hurst held a fundraiser at the home of Sharon and Seth Stark to try and bring in some extra cash before the second quarter filing deadline, and he did just that.  He also threw a pretty darn good party.

I had a blast, I+óGé¼Gäód guess there were 40-60 people there, and at around 8PM it was announced that $8,500 had been raised so far just on June 30th.  That might not seem like a lot, but keep in mind, it was only ONE day+óGé¼Gäós total, and for a House Seat.  I can+óGé¼Gäót wait to see the final numbers come out in a few weeks.

Andy laughing it up with Hosts Seth and Sharon with Chairman George Burke looking on.

More importantly, Andy gave an amazing speech, in which he said that he promised to take the fight directly to Tom Davis, and not hold any punches.  I wish I had taped the speech to transcribe parts of it here, or at least taken notes.  But he mentioned reminding voters about Davis+óGé¼Gäós all expense paid trip to Italy, that Davis subpoenaed Terri Schaivo, and so on.  Please contribute so he can continue to spread his message of change to the 11th district.

It should also be noted, that the fundraiser was hosted and attended by all Democratic Party Chairs with jurisdiction over the VA-11 district; George Burke (11th Congressional District Chair), Victor Bras (Prince William County Chair), Ginny Peters (Fairfax County Chair) and Dan Drummond (Fairfax City Chair).

I for one am excited, and am looking forward to Tom Davis having his first real challenge in years.  Let me tell you, every Andy Hurst event that I+óGé¼Gäóve gone to, the energy has been electrifying, Andy has been knocking on doors since at least August 2005, and understands people powered politics better than any politician I+óGé¼Gäóve ever met (save maybe Governor Dean).

At the event, I asked Michael Burns, one of Andy's staffers, what the plan was from here to November, this was his response:

"knock on every door in the district...twice"

Mike, Andy Sounds like a plan, let's help them out.

Happen to go to the event?  And if so, how would you rate it.

i was there (GrumpyCareBear24 - 7/1/2006 9:52:06 PM)
I also was at that event, and I agree completely.

Andy is the first politician that I have ever given money to, and the first Democrat I have ever supported.  He's a great guy, I volunteered for him once, and he has remembered my name ever since.

I'll be marching with him in Fairfax City for the July 4th parade, and hope to meet some of you guys there.

People will take notice (bladerunner - 7/2/2006 10:14:26 AM)
Everyone that knows Andy can't wait for all the people of the 11th District to hear his message and see his compelling, determined style(myself included). He's the real deal, and speaks straight from the heart, no BS. And he enjoys it. Anyone that can donate$$$--whatever the amount will be helping an outstanding candidate. And they're very appreciative of whatever you can give, small or large. See you on the trail.

Andy is all heart (Dan - 7/2/2006 10:51:18 AM)
Andy is just great.  I plan on putting a lot of effort into his campaign.  My concern is simple.  He needs exposure.  Tom Davis appears to not even recognize Andy yet.  We need a poll to come out and prove that people want something different.  Andy is not just what the 11th District needs, he is what this COUNTRY needs.  A smart, sharp, and very decent human being instead of a career-politico like Davis.  We need people the quality of Andy in the House.

I completely agree (pitin - 7/2/2006 11:47:04 AM)
...And so does Andy.

I was at his primary night party, and when Davis called to congratulate him, he said something along the lines of "I look forward to campaigning against you in November".  Andy told us all and said (paraphrasing), "we've been fighting for a year now, and the full fight starts tomorrow, not in Nov."

I think his field program will help tremendously, so everyone sign up to do some canvassing or phone calls.

Andy's speech was electrifying (Mookie - 7/2/2006 12:38:37 PM)
The crowd was great, and although they interrupted Andy's speech with whoops and digs at Davis and questions, he answered them all without faltering and continued.  Everyone is so excited about having a fighter in this race!

We really should get a videotape of his next speech so the whole district should see him; I can't imagine they would vote for anyone else once they do.  If we do get one, could we post one on RaisingKaine?

I tell you what (pitin - 7/2/2006 1:10:53 PM)
If someone can get me a digital video of any of Andy's future speaches, I'll put it on You Tube and cross post it here and on the FCYD blog.

I noticed that too about his speach, how he was able to stay on message and respond to peoples hollaring and questions during his speach.

Andy Is A Worker (lmdiamond - 7/2/2006 1:42:53 PM)
This was a good event.

The key thing I love about Andy is that he works so hard.  He makes people want to get behind him with his dedication and fighting spirit.  While I don't live in the 11th now, I was gerrymandered out by Tommy Boy.  Andy will be a different kind of Congressman.  He's earned my loyalty.  I'll walk some hundreds of doors for Andy Hurst.

In addition to what the candidates do, I'm hoping to see a strong combined Dem campaign up here for Webb, Andy and Judy Feder.  These are all impressive people who will make a big difference in DC.

Hey Bruce (pitin - 7/2/2006 7:22:45 PM)
Just wanted to thank you for your support, and let you know J.W. is kicking ass down in the 11th.

Everytime I swing by the campaign office, they have volunteers, interns and staff keeping busy, and whenever I've gone to an event, the energy has been amazing.

Andy and the Democrats (Teddy - 7/2/2006 7:24:28 PM)
I, too, was at the Stark's house and Andy gave an electrifying speech, every bit the litigator driving his case home to the jury. I wanted a fighter, and we sure got one with Andy. The crowd was definitely with him all the way, but there are still some lingering Miller fans among the Fairfax Dem heirarchy who are dragging their feet on Webb, not recognizing that it's a unifed campaign. It is asbsolutely necessary to move ahead together at all levels now the primary is over, just as Dickie Cranwell said in his speech in Charlottesville; you can't stay aloof, saying "I'll vote for Andy (and Webb too) in November, but I'm not going to work for  Webb now." That won't work and, someday I trust they will realize they're cutting off their noses to spite their faces.

Thanks for the positive write up! (Sharon Stark - 7/2/2006 7:54:15 PM)
I have never posted to a blog before, but when I got a call from a friend telling me that our little party was on this site, I decided that the time is now right...

Thank you  to the poster who said that the party was a blast...Months ago I said to Andy that we really need to put the FUN back in FUNdraising.  Good times for a Great Candidate and a Great Cause.

The idea of a last minute mini fundraiser came up only 8 days before the event.  Notice of this event went out only 4 days in advance.  Due to this short timeframe, we were hoping for somewhere in the range of $2500.00 and we raised much, much more.  Think of what we could do with 2 weeks notice!  Huge thanks must go out to James Walkinshaw, George Burke, Ginny Peters, Vic Bras and Dan Drummond for their successful efforts in getting this information out to as many people as possible in  such a short time and  also to veryone who brought food and beverages, .  But the biggest Thank You goes out to  everyone who came on such short nocice to support Andy... We had guests here from as far away as Gainesville!

In addition to raising a little bit of cash for Andy, we hopefully were successful in achieving another goal - to fuel the excitement that surrounds this campaign.  A major reason that  I chose to support Andy early on in this race is because of that fire and fighting spirit that he brings to the table.  If we keep working together, we can keep these fires burning brightly.

We have an opportunity here in the 11th that we have not had in quite a long time.  We have a tide that is turning and the perfect candidate in Andy Hurst.  Keep working, keep raising money, keep spreading the word and we will win!

Thanks
Sharon Stark

PS - I have a couple of questions -
the party is rated on your site as a "4"...if that is on a scale of 1 - 10, I have a lot of work to do! Please tell me what you rating scale is...

Whoever said 40 - 60  must have stayed in the kitchen.  I would guess closer to 85-100.

Sharon (pitin - 7/2/2006 8:25:03 PM)
Congratulations on your first blog post.  I'm the diarist here, real name Nate de la Piedra.  We first met back on the Dave Marsden campaign and a few times since at random events. my estimate was the 40-60, but I got there late, (just as Andy was speaking) then was on the deck outside a lot, thanks for the more accurate numbers.

As far as the ratings.  People rate other peoples comments to show approval and gratitude for adding to the community and the debate.  (it's a scale of 1-4).

Thanks for always hosting great fundraisers.

and remember

we're the Democratic Party, not the Democratic Get Together!

Campaign Update (NovaDem - 7/3/2006 10:31:40 AM)
Hey just wanted to let everybody know that the mo for the fundraiser continued in to this weekend.  We had about 10 people (including our very own RKer Matt in VA) out on Saturday and we canvassed an entire precinct, but instead of taking Sunday off, we got a few people togather and went out and started a second precinct.  Check out all our up coming events
