Do Toaster Tariffs Help Terrorists?

To date George Felix Allen has displayed his superior leadership skills by voting for George Bush's agenda 97% of the time.  I suppose if you think that the country is on the right track Felix's voting record is ok.  But it sure ain't leadership to rubberstamp 97% of someone else's agenda.

Maybe he's done more in the way of introducing legislation that will have a profound and positive impact on Virginia and our Country as a whole.

You can check out what Felix has done recently in terms of legislative leadership here.  Hat tip to RayH and his recent post about Allen's efforts to produce meaningful legislation.

A peculiar set of bills caught my eye.  Read about Felix's sudden obsession with toasters on the flip...
Seems that George Felix Allen very recently (5/26/06) sponsored a number bills to temporarily suspend duty for various kitchen products.  Bills (S.3288 through S.3303 excluding S.3302) would  temporarily suspend the duty (for about 3 years) on the following:

  handheld electronic can openers
  electric knives
toaster ovens with single-slot traditional toaster opening on top of oven
  ice shavers
dual-press sandwich makers with floating upper lid and lock
electric drink mixers with tilt mixing heads and two-speed motors
electric juice extractors greater than 300 watts but less than 400 watts
electric juice extractors not less than 800 watts
  open-top electric indoor grills
  electric coffee grinders
  electric percolators
automatic drip coffeemakers other than those with clocks
automatic drip coffeemakers with electronic clocks
electronic under-the-cabinet mounting electric can openers
food slicers and shredders with top-mounted motors and replaceable mixing bowls

Huh?

I've got nothing against kitchen products but I must be missing something here because this set of bills looks to be fairly pointless.

Will suspended duty on toaster ovens with single-slot traditional toaster opening on top of oven somehow help fight terrorism?  Do duty free automatic drip coffeemakers other than those with clocks address serious problems with education or the environment.  Will the lower costs associated with no duty on ice shavers push the economy to new heights?  Seriously, what is the purpose of all this?

And now I'm beginning to understand why George is bored with his job in the U.S. Senate.  After all, if I had to deal with electric juice extractors not less than 800 watts all day long I'd be bored too.

Crazy. Maybe they should duty free (Alicia - 6/29/2006 11:43:18 AM)
kevlar vests, so the families that have to buy them for their soldiers/marines, don't have to pay taxes on them.

That would require leadership (Eric - 6/29/2006 12:00:00 PM)
Toasters are much easier.

There's a reason the horse looks embarrassed. (loboforestal - 6/29/2006 11:56:35 AM)

Correlation (Corey - 6/29/2006 12:04:54 PM)
There's probably a direct correlation to his donors wishes.

The toaster lobby?

Exactly (Eric - 6/29/2006 12:16:29 PM)
I haven't had the time to dig all around his donor list or who's been lobbying him - but I'd bet these bills specifically benefit a one, or a few, donors.  Just moving a few more dollars into the pockets of individuals.

You'd think he'd be more careful about any appearance he's being bought off in an election year.  Maybe it's innocent, but I can't figure out any legitimate reason for this.

Try Walmart (loboforestal - 6/29/2006 12:27:40 PM)

Yep! $10,000 in 2005 (Bubby - 6/29/2006 12:56:56 PM)
Walmart gave him $10,000 in 2005.

Now what in the name-of-all-that-is-holy is the "Outback Steakhouse Political Action Committee"?  - the fake Australian steakhouse came up with $10,000 for for the fake cowboy in 2005.  Never liked that place anyway...

Brilliant! (kevinceckowski - 6/29/2006 1:18:40 PM)
Let's look at donors
and
Run another list of Bills he wanted to have signed.

Remember, none of his writings ever made it to the floor, or did and ended in a waste heap.

Bet those donors who wanted his "clout" are a tad bit dis-gusss'edd.

And the horse is cute. Rescue the horse! kc.

Clout? (loboforestal - 6/29/2006 1:31:47 PM)
I thought you said "stout".  Sorry.
