Developers in Fairfax make, break promises

No wonder Governor Kaine targeted developers in his calls for "slow growth."

WaPa reports that "[m]ore than 120 construction projects  in Fairfax County neighborhoods have been left incomplete for years -- some a decade or longer -- because developers failed to make public improvements they promised when their building plans were approved."

What's the damage?

The neglect by developers means that many Fairfax residents paid premium prices for homes in neighborhoods with poorly built or unfinished roads, inadequate storm-water retention ponds, [etc.]

Unfinished roads?! I'd guess that unfinished roads exacerbates the traffic problems brought on by development!

The article noted that the unfinished work cost county taxpayers $1.1 million over the past five years with Fairfax stepping in to fill the void.

Following up on this story, WaPo's Fairfax blog reports that "the Fairfax County Board called for closer oversight of development projects." Democrats Sharon Bulova and Gerald Hyland called for plans for oversight and dealing with delinquencies.

Let's not forget Prince William County (PaulVa - 6/27/2006 4:02:20 PM)
Where developers run the show, don't pay their fair share for roads, leave projects unfinished or even worst, advertise a Harris Teeter to neighborhood residents in Dumfries, and then allow a Wal-Mart to be put in.
