For some time now, a lot of us younger Democrats in Southwest Virginia have been saying "we need to get more young people involved in the party."  I am proud to announce that several young Democrats - from all across the region - are pulling together to start a Southwest Virginia Young Democrats group.

The group will be holding its first meeting next weekend.

Here are the details (below the fold):

The first meeting of the Southwest Virginia Young Democrats group will be:

Sunday, July 2, 2006 at 5:00 PM

The first meeting will be held at:

Los Arcos
909 W Main St
Abingdon, VA 24210
(276) 676-0575

Although not required, you are encouraged to RSVP to tabithapeace@hotmail.com.

If you are a young Democrat in Southwest Virginia, you will not want to miss this meeting.  For the group to be successful, people will need to step-up and be active from the start.

The number of Democrats in Southwest Virginia continues to decline.  Now is the time to act to reverse this trend and this group will be the perfect vehicle to rebuild our party with young, energized Democrats.

I look forward to attending and hope to see several of you other young Democrats there.

is there a website yet?  if not, I recommend checking out the Fairfax Young Dems site here:

It's quite impressive.

Thanks Rob... (Brian - 6/23/2006 11:00:02 PM)
We don't have a website yet, but here is a temporary page for the new group.

Wish I could attend! (mkfox - 6/24/2006 12:46:27 AM)
But I work for a local media outlet and it's best I stay neutral in partisan matters.

Hmm.... (Brian - 6/24/2006 8:36:44 AM)
Yeah, we don't want to be giving our friends any reason to chant "liberal bias" anymore than they already do.

But, if you change your mind, we would love to have you attend - in your non-work capacity.  :)

Perhaps... (pitin - 6/24/2006 1:01:45 PM)
You could "cover" the event if you work in reporting capacity.  Or "just let the reporters know" if you work in technical or support...Just saying

Can't attend (mkfox - 6/24/2006 2:28:54 PM)
Because I've got other plans that day but keep us posted about meetings in the future and I'll definitely come to one as an "informed media consultant"  ;)  Partisan political meeting? Nah, boss, I'm just hanging out with chums eating Mexican.

Ha... (Brian - 6/24/2006 10:57:33 PM)
Sounds like a plan to me! :)

Great idea! (hokiechris - 6/24/2006 10:39:26 PM)
It's refreshing to see this youthful enthusiasm for Democratic values and beliefs in SW Virginia.  I'm 38 years old and have been an officer (Treasurer) with the Pulaski County Democratic Committee for almost two years now.  This year, we elected our new Chair who is in his early forties, a new Vice Chair who is around my age, and our new Secretary is a college student at Radford U!

Our former officers were excellent, but it is great to be a part of our current executive committee.  I think we each bring new ideas to the table, put in our share of hard work, and know how to have fun along the way.

Of course, after reading the age cutoff I decided that I didn't need anything else in my life to remind me that I stopped being "young" after I turned 36!  (ha-ha)  But seriously, I'll be sure to pass the word along to our Secretary and also to our recent YD graduates from the high school.  Hopefully they can make your first meeting.

Best wishes to you all and please "start a Revolution"!

Thanks.... (Brian - 6/24/2006 10:57:08 PM)
... HokieChris for spreading the word.

Getting more young people involved is very important to us growing the party in Southwest Virginia.
