In 2005, Tim Kaine campaigned hard promising a new 4-year university for southside Virginia.

Promise Kept.

MARTINSVILLE, Va. The money is still tied up in state budget negotiations, but Governor Tim Kaine has given a Southside college the force of law.

Kaine traveled to Martinsville yesterday for a ceremonial bill-signing for the New College Institute.

Actually, the governor had signed the bill a couple of weeks ago. But his spokesman, Kevin Hall, says Kaine repeated the gesture yesterday so he could celebrate with the community.

The governor also announced the appointment of seven members to the institute's board of directors. General Assembly leaders will appoint five others.

Barry Dorsey, the institute's executive director, announced that the school will offer a pilot program beginning in the fall under alliances with Longwood, Radford and Averett universities, the University of Virginia and Ferrum College.

The Virginia Rural Renaissance continues; brought to you by great Democrats like Tim Kaine.

Go Governor Kaine! (Reen - 6/16/2006 9:57:37 AM)
This is incredibly wonderful news and brought tears to my eyes.

Tim Kaine an Education Governor (Kip - 6/16/2006 10:13:31 AM)
Governor Kaine really has done so much to advance education. He has proposed and worked hard on universal pre-k initiative and now he is working on the other end opening up a new University. To a large degree, I think Kaine's  committment to education is an effort to often lost on so many Republicans who think that all government should do is cut taxes.

Thank you Governor Kaine for giving more Virginias the opportunity to get a higher eductaion.

Gov. Kaine-- (summercat - 6/16/2006 2:13:25 PM)
good and effective.  What a great combo!

good idea, but one concern (teacherken - 6/16/2006 4:56:27 PM)
Al Weed has been trying to get something like this for 3 years, but he wanted it in Danville.  Seems like a certain amount of lack of coordination.
