UPDATED: Obama Endorsed Webb?!... Umm... No.

USA Today Reports:

Prominent Senate Democrats +óGé¼GÇ¥ Majority Leader Harry Reid, 2004 presidential nominee John Kerry, Campaign Committee Chairman Charles Schumer, Illinois' Barack Obama +óGé¼GÇ¥ already have made their choice. They say Webb is their "best hope" to gain a seat and hobble Allen's White House ambitions.

How could we possibly have missed this?  Senator Obama was great on the stump for Tim Kaine, and he'll do GREAT things for Jim Webb.

C'mon Virginia Democrats. Vote for Jim Webb. Put this seat in play!

[UPDATE: IT AIN'T SO.  As of 12:34 PM, USA Today changed their story.  The paragraph which I'd previously copied now reads:

Virginia Democrats will nominate one of them today to take on Sen. George Allen, a former governor and likely Republican presidential candidate. Prominent Senate Democrats +óGé¼GÇ¥ Majority Leader Harry Reid, 2004 presidential nominee John Kerry, Campaign Committee Chairman Charles Schumer +óGé¼GÇ¥ already have made their choice. They say Webb is their "best hope" to gain a seat and hobble Allen's White House ambitions. Updated 6/13/2006 12:34 PM ET

I guess we'll have to wait for the General for Obama to get involved.]

ObamaWOOOOW!! (kevinceckowski - 6/13/2006 10:57:15 AM)
WOW!  Hope this is for real.  What a super endorsement on a super day.  See you all tonight at the Victory Party. kc

"best hope" (loboforestal - 6/13/2006 11:01:48 AM)
The Big O Didn't necessarily officially endorse, though.

Everybody knows Webb is the "best hope to gain a seat and hobble Allen's White House ambitions".

No Obama Endorsement? (David M - 6/13/2006 1:15:23 PM)
No Obama endorsement, so what? This is why Obama is showing himself to be the One-Speach Wonder of the political world. He has groupies and politicos that adore him, but what has he done with it? No big speeches against Bush's policies no effort to use his "political capital" to rally American's around saving our Constitution.

His failure to do any of the above, his failure to endorse Jim Webb when it could have actually helped, and his clear clinging to the middle of the road politically remind me why I am still luke warm on Obama.

Great Convention speech, granted. But what have you done for me lately?

Advice to Obama: Quit staring in the mirror and reading all the glowing press you've been getting. Start taking tough, meaniful stands.

America needs bold leaders, not another cautious, preening politician. DC is already full of those.

You're just wrong on every count (Josh - 6/13/2006 1:49:35 PM)
Obama is a rising star who will be a Democratic party leader for a generation.

Obama will help Webb enormously if he gets involved in the General, but I think all national Democrats are counting more on the fact that Webb will help them enormously with his leadership, integrity and character.

Obama's stands are strong and once we have the Senate, he'll actually be able to start getting some traction on his powerful vision for America.

Could Be a Star If He Had More Courage (David M - 6/13/2006 3:37:55 PM)
Sorry Josh, I know we are going to have to disagree on this. My hopes were initially very high for Obama and I know he is a fundraiser's wet dream, but I tend to judge my politicians on their performance and not their looks, thus I refuse to bow down to the cult of personality.

Also, I hear Obama is particularly difficult when trying to navigate potentials deals or endorsements, it will be a long time before I rush to kiss his ring. Although I eagerly wait the chance to be proven wrong. Besides Jim Webb, the Democrats are always in need of a new hero.

What what? (Nichole - 6/13/2006 11:22:41 AM)
Is this true? You better not be messing with me Josh!!!!!!

I was as surprised as you! (Josh - 6/13/2006 11:24:23 AM)
I just found it in USA today and had to ask.  WTF?!

Hrm (Nichole - 6/13/2006 11:28:03 AM)
You better not be joshing me. (bad pun, I know)

You can be suck a sneaky snake!

errr oops (Nichole - 6/13/2006 11:28:36 AM)
er such. Amusing... typo though!

outstanding! (I.Publius - 6/13/2006 12:07:32 PM)
I'm sure an endorsement from Obama will have a tremendous effect during the general election.  Virginians will react much as they would to a Kennedy or Hillary endorsement.  Bravo!

Obama did not endorse Webb! (va.walter - 6/13/2006 12:31:52 PM)
At least not according to that article.  Obama's name doesn't appear anywhere in that article.  It looks like this post is just a doctored up quote from the article to make it look like an endorsement.  If that's true it's dispicable.

Not doctored, directly quoted (Josh - 6/13/2006 12:38:59 PM)
Thanks for the head's up.  I've updated my post accordingly.

A Retraction by USA Today (anon06 - 6/13/2006 12:35:29 PM)
I called 1-800-USA-0001 and asked to be connected to Jill Lawrence, the reporter who filed this story.

I spoke with Jill Lawrence at 12:30pm.  Ms. Lawrence confirmed that this was an error, and that it should have read "Dick Durbin," the other Illinois Senator.  A correction has been issued to be run in tomorrow's (or possibly Thursday's) edition.  Additionally, she will try to get an update to the usa.com article.

Kind-a funny, really.  But I would beg all of us to be a little practical on this issue.  If Senator Obama were to endorse any primary candidate in Virginia, he could potentially anger the other candidate's supporters.  We can all agree that a Barack Obama is a near once-in-a-lifetime-politician.  This is exactly why he did not get himself into this debate.

Polls close in 6 1/2 hours.  USA Today has retracted the name drop.  Can we let this go, for Senator Obama's sake?

Thanks for checking on that (Josh - 6/13/2006 12:40:04 PM)
do you have any interest in helping run competitive intelligence against Allen for the general?

That's 2 "reporter errors" in Webb's favor today. (va.walter - 6/13/2006 12:40:05 PM)
Washington Times says Warner endorsed Webb and the USAToday says Obama endorsed Webb.  These errors, made on election day with no time for a meaningful retraction, are inconceivable.

Maybe they're trying to (Eric - 6/13/2006 12:47:14 PM)
make up for the errors in Miller's favor.  Noted a few minutes ago (and many times previously) was the INCORRECT  reporting that Miller has a strong lead in Virginia politician endorsements.

Hmmm.... (va.walter - 6/13/2006 12:52:27 PM)
Which would rather have, errors that say you've been endorsed by Warner and Obama or errors (which some still say are true) that you've got more VA support?  Obviously, you'd rather have number 1.

Furthermore, the real problem isn't just the error but the timing.  Webb has had months to work to change the perceptions within VA, Miller has no ability to correct these errors.  In a race this close they could (especially the Warner one) be huge.

Good news for the Miller folks though is that the early word looks like these won't matter.
