Mark Shields on Jim Webb (UPDATE: Nina Totenberg Comments)

As many of you know, Mark Shields is one of America's most thoughtful political commentators. He is also a strong Progressive, a "fighting Dem" who served our country as a US Marine.  In 1968, at the age of 31, Shields was busy running Robert F. Kennedy's campaign for President.  Mark is also a great friend of Jim Webb.

Well, this morning on Inside Washington, here's what Shields had to say about Jim Webb:  "If Virginians are smart enough to welcome back Democrats that left the party as Repubs did with Reagan, etc. they will win the seat this November."

You can say that again, Mark.  Go Webb!

[UPDATE:  On the same show, Nina Totenberg said:

Well, if they have a prayer of beating George Allen, it+óGé¼Gäós Jim Webb.  I mean, political parties have gotten so polarized that they do the most stupid things.  You know, Jane Harman, who won a very difficult seat originally in California and has been redistricted into a safe seat now, had a serious challenge because she wasn+óGé¼Gäót sufficiently anti-war.  She voted for the original Iraq resolution.  This is hari-kari and Jim Webb offers the Democrats a chance not to commit suicide.

Nice.]

Trolling says a lot about you. (loboforestal - 6/11/2006 1:40:14 PM)
Again, Thomas, it's a character issue.

Supported him in 1994 (Craig - 6/11/2006 1:51:06 PM)
And apparently there's no hard feelings, since all of Robb's staff endorsed Webb.

Come on man, yer living in the past.  Do you wanna beat Allen, or do you wanna play "More Democrat Than Thou?"

I am sorry you were troll-rated by several people.  Although you have said offensive things, this was not one of them.  I do not doubt that some of Shields' allegiance to Webb comes from his friendship and common experiences.

However, I believe more strongly that Shields is a smart guy and sees the wrting-on-the-wall about Webb like so many other people have, even dating back to November, when Webb first mentioned he'd been approached (by M. Warner) about running for Senate.

"Jim Webb offers the Democrats a chance not to commit suicide." (Left Wing - 6/12/2006 1:34:20 PM)
I just read a comment at a democratic forum that puts this in a new light if true:
"Va Senate, Miller running only to gain visibility, cred.w/Dems.
He knows that he cannot beat Geo Allen.
But he gains by raising his profile.
He planned to win by losing.
Probably he has his eyes on the Governor's mansion.
His plans got all messed up by Jim Webb's entering the race.
I guess that is why he has run such a negative campaign...his plans to a statewide higher office, might just be foiled."

That doesn't surprise me at all. (Lowell - 6/12/2006 1:59:51 PM)
Oh well, the best laid plans...

Can you imagine a Miller/Kilgore Governor's race debate? (loboforestal - 6/12/2006 2:08:49 PM)
"You're a Prussian militarist"

"No, *you* are the Prussian militarist".

shudder.
