Webb and Miller on "Hardball" Thursday?

According to AP reporter Bob Lewis, "Democrats Harris Miller and James Webb apparently have another televised clash before next week's Senate primary, this time before a national audience."  Apparently, it's only going to be for about 10 minutes, but Lewis points out that this "would provide the only statewide television duel between the primary rivals who hope to challenge Republican Sen. George Allen."

Check it out!

Darn (Dan - 6/5/2006 9:14:50 PM)
I am going to miss it, but only because I have to hand out Webb flyers at a metro stop.  Hopefully someone will tape it and post the link up on Raising Kaine!

Thanks Dan. (loboforestal - 6/5/2006 9:21:00 PM)
Hey Dan, can you tell us how people can help out with the Metros?
Get specific: who, where, etc.

Hopefully Lowell will have the links up to the Realvideo/WMA/flash or whatever videos as soon as they're available.

Who's "our" voters? (loboforestal - 6/5/2006 9:18:50 PM)
We all know the common wisdom: drive left in primaries, drive more to the right in general (vice-versa for Republicans).  Jim has to appeal to the core Democratic constituencies: college educated whites, blacks, and working folks of all stripes.  Jim needs to emphasize that he think Harris' plan to outsource federal workers is a bad idea.  He needs to reaffrim his belief in staying out of people's private lives.  He needs to remind people that Harris has lead the charge on unfair subsides to industries which target middle class jobs.  He needs to point out that he favors an affirmative action program that helps poor blacks, not upper class recent immigrants.  He needs to point out that he listens to the people with Harris' ITAA slush fund money.  His heroic stance on warning that Iraq was not going to be "Mission Accomplished" as Harris and his Republican buddies thought should push the Webb juggernaut over the top.

Even better. (Kathy Gerber - 6/6/2006 2:16:45 AM)
Let's hope someone's schooled Harris Miller on preschool etiquette and he is able to refrain from rude interruptions for the full 10 minute interval.

Most viewers... (Left Wing - 6/6/2006 4:18:14 PM)
...would love to hear someone tell Chris Mathews to shut up!

Not a good format (rjl - 6/6/2006 10:44:42 AM)
While appearing will gain visability, this is not a good format for either candidate.  "Hardball" is about "Hardball" and both candidates will essentially be talking heads within the show's larger context of how Virginia may turn out to be a key election in '06, the conflicts within the Democratic primary, and Chris' opinion thereof within a dramatic national storyline about challenging Presidential contender, George Allen.

Within a 10-minute segment with predictable every-10-seconds interruptions, the candidates will necessarily speak in soundbites.  The push will be to stimulate conflict and generate news (about the conflict).

All the while, in this format, the candidates are likely to appear slightly too eager in their grand national appearance, creating unnecessary elevation of and footage for George Allen who, coincidentally, is launching his advertising the same day.

Since they have agreed to appear, I hope media folks recognize that this is one of those "shape the message" moments, that they quash the reflexive idea that you can actually get your campaign's thematic points across in the less than 2:00 total your guy will actually have (splintered into :09 bites), and spend the entire 10: "shaping" the discusion of why George Allen needs to go.  Use "Hardball" and not vice versa.

Just my opinion.  I could be wrong.
