Why Is Harris Miller Avoiding the Blogosphere?

You would think Harris Miller, a candidate who tries to pass himself off as an internet-savvy guy, who headed a group called the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) would be all over posting on the blogosphere.

So why is he not here on RaisingKaine?  Why is he not on DailyKos?  Or MyDD?  Or any other of a number of Democratic sites?

What is Harris Miller hiding?  I mean, the internet should be his turf, right?  He is, of course, a technology industry leader.

This is a man who has been ravaged across all corners of the blogosphere on his dubious record.  Will he not stand up for himself?

And if he won't what does that say about his chances against someone like George Allen?

Sorry for the shortened post, but, inquiring minds want to know.

Because that's where all of the technically saavy people are...and they are already familiar with Miller though his highly public attempts to destroy their field and careers through labor arbitrage.

So, he's hitting the people who have never heard of him.

technology industry leader (TurnVirginiaBlue - 6/2/2006 2:17:00 PM)
Now that's a laugh!  I see no engineering degrees or even a MBA with a technology focus anywhere in his background.

I do see a public relations or how to manipulate public opinion background.

I'll bet dollars to donuts he would recognize an if else statement or know the difference between a RJ-11 and an RJ-34 connector, never mind have any insight into technical strategy or infrastructure.

He can't handle it (KathyinBlacksburg - 6/2/2006 2:33:37 PM)
The reason Miller avoids the blogosphere is he can't handle the truth.  Instead he tries to fan emotional flames, much like his GOP counterparts.  Not surprising since they're the ones he usually looks out for when he lobbies.

I deleted a diary (phriendlyjaime - 6/2/2006 2:43:46 PM)
on this subject i had up the other day.  It was concerning the fact that no matter how you google miller, the only way his senatorial web page comes up is if you actually typed in miller 2006 in the search.

HOWEVER-every time you google miller, you get webbforsenate in your searches.

hehehehehehehehe...

Why'd you do that? (Eric - 6/2/2006 2:52:18 PM)
I thought it was a fine diary.  Got to the fact that a supposedly IT savvy guy really isn't making much of a splash with IT.  Unless you count robo-calls IT.

Someone (phriendlyjaime - 6/2/2006 2:54:54 PM)
suggested I delete it in order to keep the info I posted out of Miller staffers hands.

What are your thoughts on that?

If Miller's staff is that (Eric - 6/2/2006 3:06:13 PM)
clueless he must have missed the IT boat altogether.  Maybe because he was so busy lobbying that he didn't learn anything about technology.  Or at least he didn't share with his staff.

More realistically... they are probably following a number of blogs and already read it.

But so what if they find out they're losing the battle on the internet.  They're going to find out they lost the whole thing on the 13th.  And a last minute scramble to bump up google hits isn't going to change that.

Request (TurnVirginiaBlue - 6/2/2006 2:49:24 PM)
This is a side topic but we are hunting for those willing to stand up and tell their stories to reports on being displaced through labor arbitrage (offshore outsourcing, H-1B, L-1).

We are getting ignored on the statistics and in fact getting biased statistics in major press instead of more accurate ones.

We need people to tell their personal stories and get this issue front and center or the corporate lobbyists (Bill Gates) will win and cause further decimation of the middle class career positions as well as blue collar.

You all seem to be quite versed in these topics and I have frankly not meet you previously to supporting Webb.

If you're interested or know of someone who might be please email me.

Solidarity, stand up and speak truth.

I have a friend who may be willing... (Loudoun County Dem - 6/2/2006 3:11:28 PM)
...but it has been a couple of years since he moved and I haven't heard from him in a while. I'll try to get in touch with him to see if I can forward his name/number (I don't want to speak for him without his permission).

Thanks (TurnVirginiaBlue - 6/2/2006 3:47:15 PM)
I will be promoting the use of "name withheld".  There is a fear of blackballing plus the threat of NDAs and other contractual maneuvers to try to silence people from speaking out.

Then, some literally became homeless and they are impossible to track.

I have a theory.. (Kathy Gerber - 6/2/2006 4:04:47 PM)
With few (important and yet to be diaried) exception, Miller is much more open with the Indian press. First some background [1]:

Harris Miller, president of the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA), told News India-Times, that a new coalition of trade groups hopes to change the American antipathy to outsourcing. India, in particular, has become the butt of public and political anger as the destination for jobs lost to American workers and one of the top issues in an election year.

The newly-formed Coalition for Economic Growth and American Jobs, said Miller, was set up to educate the public and leading government officials that having United States be an active participant in the global economy is good, and to combat the "inaccurate and unhistorical" reporting that U.S. jobs going overseas was bad for the country, he told News India-Times in an interview.

"Much of the job-loss has nothing to do with overseas jobs loss," he said. "It has to do with oil price, the burst bubble, and other things. Reports that the IT industry is going to go like the textile industry is pure and absolute nonsense because these jobs require people to be here. The jobs going overseas are less qualified ones," Miller said.

That first paragraph is a prelude to the vicious xenophobic meme that has been spread far and wide and used against all non-lemmings.

And this is also relevant, because eventually even Miller had to leave flatland and acknowledge the existence of the jobless recovery:

"Part of our challenge is to explain that it's not a jobless growth taking place. Firstly, it's always the case that the last part of the economy to recover is the jobs. It happened in the 1990s," he said.

"We have seen a slow increase, not as rapid as some would like, in jobs. There's been a net increase of 500,000 jobs since September. Still there are net 2 million less jobs since he took office," Miller conceded.

And finally:

The divide may be vast between the two lobbies, Miller says, but "I'm an optimist. I believe even with irrational arguments, rational minds will prevail against stupid acts."

I hope I have properly contextualized the last quote there.
Because I think it may explain two interrelated motives for Miller avoiding the net.  First, it appears that Miller considers many people to be stupid, and most of Miller's irrational arguments involve omission of critical information.

No, I am not putting thoughts there, but anyone with half a brain who tells people how he proposes to bring home jobs that he himself helped ship overseas in the first place either probably thinks his audience is stupid or is a track star.

This approach doesn't work at home because the cultural gap that he hopes to leverage is one-sided.  As one example, Kevin Schmidt's arguments are highly illogical.  The rational arguments on the part of Miller's campaign are so sparse that they either must be repeated ad infinitum or culled from old history (the Reagan thing), hence they turn into attacks instead of discussion.  For example, MH in PA's repetition about Webb needing to apologize to Kerry.

Miller also knows that he has committed many stupid acts that are coming to light.  If he was speaking honestly with the Indian reporter, then we can assume he believes he is wasting time because rational minds will prevail whether the arguments are rational or irrational.  So why should he bother?  He has made too many preemptive attacks based on misinformation and those too were stupid acts.

When Miller's advocates go on the net, they have insulted people and hurt their own candidate. Furthermore, Miller's net advocates are difficult to differentiate from Allen advocates and there isn't much use in trying.  They both now have a track record of attacks.

So in summary -
1.  Miller thinks those who disagree with him are stupid. This from a Virginia candidate who talks about Paul Revere instead of Jack Jouett.
2.  He knows that his own stupid acts are indefensible and must rely on one-sided communication such as mailers and robo-calls.

Kathy, you are fast becoming one of my heroes... (Loudoun County Dem - 6/2/2006 4:28:03 PM)
I learn so much from your posts...

Here, here! (thaddaeus toad - 6/2/2006 4:44:26 PM)
Thank you for your insights.
Miller can't go "live-blogging", he has no idea how to talk to people he can't lay-off.  It's a much safer conversation when you know people will kiss your ass to keep their families fed.

Well... (The Ditzy Democrats - 6/2/2006 9:20:10 PM)
I like to think that he's avoiding the blogosphere because he got his ass handed to him last time he attempted a blogger conference call, but that's probably not it. :D

My best guess is that he realizes that very few people who blog actually like him, and that there's really no way that he's going to change anyone's minds and, well, if I was Harris Miller, I'd be terrified of you people! OMG, y'all don't play! There is seemingly nothing about this man the pro-Jim Webb bloggers don't know. You probably know stuff that he's forgotten he ever said/did. If you had Harris here for a liveblog, he'd end up scarred for life, needing years upon years of therapy to recover.

Think about it this way: if you were Harris Miller, would you want to talk to even just Lowell, Josh and Ben, where they ask you questions, and you don't know what they're gonna ask, but you have to answer some of the questions, and you know they all hate you and that you cause them to vomit?
