Webb Outraises Miller, Not Counting Miller's Own $500,000

According to today's Virginian Pilot, Jim Webb raised $294,000 from April 1 through May 24 in donations from other people, compared to less than $200,000 for Harris Miller (not counting self-funding).  According to the Virginian-Pilot:

Miller, a technology lobbyist, personally donated $500,000 of the nearly $700,000 he raised between April 1 and May 24, according to a report filed Thursday with the Federal Election Commission.

Webb, an author and former secretary of the Navy, raised $294,000 during the same period, none of the money coming from his own pocket.

In large part due to Miller's own $500,000 self-funding, Miller leads Webb in "cash on hand." As of May 24, Jim Webb had $222,000, compared to $530,000 for Harris Miller.  And let's keep in mind that George Allen has "almost $7.6 million" - money he's been busy raising for a long time, with all the advantages of incumbency behind him - which means that Webb has a lot of catching up to do.  All this is exactly why Webb has been pushing so hard recently to raise money, so he can counter the relentlessly negative ads of Harris Miller and whatever nastiness George Allen and Co. have in store for him after June 13.  If you support Jim Webb, please help him close the gap by giving generously here.  Thanks.

But... (JasonK - 6/2/2006 11:00:15 AM)
It was admitted self funding.  Webb's camp came out well after their first reportings and said they took out a loan to inflate their numbers.  So how much of this is self financing or loans that Webb took but they aren't saying quite yet?  If none of it, kudos for beating Miller by $100k.  But if Webb gave himself money again, it's horribly misleading, not just to the public but his supporters at large.

Webb loaned the campaign $100,000 (Lowell - 6/2/2006 11:14:10 AM)
in the 1st quarter. Nothing, to my knowledge, in the 2nd quarter.  (according to the Virginian Pilot, "Webb...raised $294,000 during the same period, none of the money coming from his own pocket."

Why is it... (Loudoun County Dem - 6/2/2006 12:08:15 PM)
...that every time some egregious thing Miller has done or said is pointed out it is countered with 'how do we know that Webb didn't [whatever]?' or 'someone Webb once said [whatever] about did [whatever]'?

It really is amazing how often the "pro Miller" arguments fall into this misleading change of subject technique. There is seldom an actual defense of Miller's actions.

I'm just sayin'

Oh yeah... (Loudoun County Dem - 6/2/2006 12:13:48 PM)
I forgot... It's because 'Miller is the REAL Democrat who will take it to Allen and Bush'.

Bulls + hit!!!

Gosh... (JasonK - 6/2/2006 12:19:25 PM)
Way to dodge my question.  And this has nothing to do with issues.  This is hard cash and is not a counter.  It's a legitimate concern.

I'm willing to grant that if Webb made this money without putting any of his own, that's great for Webb.  But I think it's worth noting that everyone jumped up and down screaming "Webb raised more per day!" when the last numbers came out yet a few weeks later it was revealed he loaned himself 100k and there wasn't a peep.  Last time everyone hounded Miller for self financing and it ended up both candidates did.

Just reminding folks of that.  If that is not the case this time around, kudos.

Did you not read the article? (Loudoun County Dem - 6/2/2006 12:22:40 PM)

Large donors needed (Debby - 6/2/2006 12:11:39 PM)
While it is always important to go for the small dollar donations from lots of people, this has to extend far beyond the local volunteers.  I'm sure big donors have been courted and contributed, but its in the leaques of major fundraising now.  Hope some good fundraising people are on board.

Totally Disagree (not gretchen bulova - 6/2/2006 1:35:18 PM)
If there was a Dem out there that supported Kilgore in 01, you'd want that brought up, despite the fact that Kilgore got 59% statewide.

This is just sour grapes.

That's silly, now. (phriendlyjaime - 6/2/2006 1:42:41 PM)
And I think we all know who is eating sour grapes today.  i knew this would happen, webb's endorsements pile up, and Miller and his staff whines and stomps their feet.

Oh, dear. (jwc52 - 6/2/2006 2:50:11 PM)
You think that Harris Miller is jealous of the source and number Jim Webb's endorsements? "Sour grapes" "Stomping our feet?" I'm almost sure that Jim Webb occasionally forgets which state he's even campaigning in.

Just...wow.

Welcome to a RK jwc52... (Loudoun County Dem - 6/2/2006 3:58:23 PM)
and Yes, as a matter of fact I do think Miller is jealous of the quality and number of endorsements that Webb is getting.

That's why we read into the details (Chris from ASL - 6/2/2006 6:55:44 PM)
Heck, if I were running for office, I would give $10 million of my father's money to honor his legacy ;-)
