The Miller Republicans on Abortion

Given Harris Miller's endorsement by Kate Michelman - who, by the way, is *not* the President of the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) - it is time for us to shed some light on Miller's history of supporting some of the worst opponents of abortion.

You all know the "Miller 7"  - Dennis Hastert, Spencer Abraham, Billy Tauzin, Arlen Specter, John Sununu, John Ashcroft, Adam Putnam.  Well, guess what, they are ALL staunch opponents of abortion rights.  In fact, of the Republicans Miller deemed worthy of his financial and moral support, none of them scored over 21% from NARAL.  And, of the five whose ratings I could find, 4 of the "Miller 7" received ratings of 0% from NARAL.  I think it's fair to say that all 7 are anti-choice.

Do not let Miller trolls like "Thomas Paine" or anyone else talk about Miller's record on abortion without including his anti-choice activities.  Spread the word ..

Billy Tauzin +óGé¼GÇ£ 0% rating from NARAL

John Ashcroft - opposes all abortion rights, including in the instance of rape or incest. +óGé¼+ôI don+óGé¼Gäót apologize for being unyielding when I speak +óGé¼-ª in favor of protecting the lives of unborn children.+óGé¼-¥

Arlen Specter - 21% rating from NARAL.

Dennis Hastert +óGé¼GÇ£ 0% rating from NARAL

Spencer Abraham +óGé¼GÇ£ According to On The Issues, Abraham+óGé¼Gäós voting record indicates +óGé¼+ôstrong opposition+óGé¼-¥ to abortion rights.

John Sununu +óGé¼GÇ£ 0% rating  from NARAL

Adam Putnam +óGé¼GÇ£ 0%  rating by NARAL

Webb's support for reproductive freedom - ? (Maura in VA - 5/31/2006 5:19:51 PM)
Look, what's George Bush's rating from NARAL?  What's George Allen's?  Both of those guys were supported by Jim Webb in the past, and they're certainly more relevant to this race than Adam Putnam or John Sununu.  You have every right to criticize Miller's donations to Republicans through his work with ITAA, but tying this to abortion is a HUGE stretch...and when you don't give any such scrutiny to Webb for his past support for anti-choice politicians, it just doesn't make any sense.

If Webb is such a supporter of Roe v. Wade, how COULD he have supported either Bush or Allen?  What, you say he did so because of his concerns about defense spending?  Okay.  So Miller had his reasons for making those donations to anti-choice people, too, related to ITAA.  He certainly didn't make donations to them because of their positions on reproductive freedom.

All this reflexive defensiveness about ANYONE who endorses Harris Miller (who, by the way, is NOT the epitome of all evil in the world or even Virginia or even Virginia politics, no matter what his faults) just opens the door to more questions about Jim Webb, in my opinion.

So if you're so upset about Jim Webb getting Kate Michaelman's endorsement, do you believe Webb deserves it instead?  If so, why?  Has he ever made a contribution to Planned Parenthood, NARAL, or any other organization supporting reproductive freedom?  Has he ever spoken out or done any volunteer or organizing work related to reproductive freedom?  Has he helped raise money for the cause?  Has he publicly supported pro-choice politicians?

If so, great.  I'd love to hear about it.  Information like that about Webb's history related to reproductive freedom would certainly help sway me toward Webb, not more re-hashing of information on who Miller has donated to in the past.

I think it would have been in Michaelman's (Lowell - 5/31/2006 5:33:12 PM)
interest to stay out of the primary completely. It's her decision, obviously, but I don't see what this gains her since Miller's going down hard in 12 days.

I dunno... (Maura in VA - 5/31/2006 9:24:19 PM)
...in a primary, I'm gonna support my candidate 'till the end even if I fear she's gonna lose.  Remember how we felt about Clark and Dean?  I was the only person of any campaign to be standing outside my polling place in the VA primary in '04.  The writing was on the wall and everyone was sure Kerry was going to win.  But I wasn't gonna concede defeat until the polls closed, even if people might have said I was wasting my time or not acting in my own best interest.

Reproductive Freedom, Support and Donations (KathyinBlacksburg - 5/31/2006 9:54:23 PM)
Hi, Maura:  Nice to see you (though it looks like we're on different sides this time).  I haven't given money to NARAL in years and I haven't give to Planned Parenthood in a while either.  That view doesnt' make me against choice.

My point is that whether Webb donated to choice advocates is even less relevant than the matter being discussed.  We are getting side-tracked.  James Webb is pro-choice.  It sounds like he is more pro-choice (favors fewer restrictions) than Miller.  We got on this tangent because of Miller's divisive attack ads, claims that he's the only "real" Democrat, and Michelman's endorsement.  On choice, her endorsement was not reality based because she doesn't even know Webb's position, apparently.  She probably is a buddy of Miller's.  Are you?

Knowing you and the earnestness with which you advocate, I am a bit surprised, however, that you can support one who so often epitomizes Bush-lite or worse.  Bush-lite Democrats are something you and I have fought against in the past.  Especially on matters of individual liberty, honoring of workers, econic fairness, bridging divides (not causing rifts) universal health care, an auditable paper trail, no offshoring, and never ever supporting a war based on an obvious fiction -- you and I agree.  So, I'd have thought you a Webb supporter. Best wishes.  Again wish we were on the same side this time.  Still think your great....

No dog in this fight (Maura in VA - 6/1/2006 4:28:03 PM)
Hi, Kathy -- don't worry, we're not on opposite sides.  I have no dog in this fight: I'm not supporting either Webb or Miller in the primary.  In fact, I'm not even registered to vote in Virginia right now.  I had to change my residency to CT a couple of months ago and so I registered up here so I can vote in the Democratic primary for Ned Lamont against Joe Lieberman.  :-)  You know where I stand on the Bush-lite Democrats.

Since I'll likely be back in VA for the general in November (and re-registering back here), though, I of course do care about beating George Allen.  Being physically away from VA most of the time has given me considerable emotional distance from this primary, but I'm still following everything.  Posts like this have inspired me to comment.  Many, many of my progressive friends like you and Lowell and so many other bloggers are supporting Webb, and I respect your views enormously.  I also still question Webb, though, since I've been desperately looking for him to vociferously repudiate and explain his past support for Allen and Bush and others.  I want to believe Webb is committed to the Democratic party, but I also want to see evidence of it.  (Like using "Democrat" on his signs?  Supporting Tim Kaine over Jerry Kilgore?)

As for Miller...I'm no buddy of Miller's.  I've never met him.  I don't think there's anything wrong with his buddies supporting him, though.  I also have friends and people that I respect enormously who are supporting him, most notably Don Beyer.  I don't think Miller is nearly as horrible a person or a candidate as some Webb supporters portray him; certainly he's preferable to Allen.  So I'd support him in the general.  But that's a pretty lukewarm recommendation, honestly. I'd support a ham sandwich over George Allen, so once you're above the level of lunch meat, bread, and mayo, you've got my vote in November.  :-)

At this point, I'm glad I'm not around for this primary.  I fear these wounds will not heal easily.  I hope they will, because who ever wins will need a united Democratic party behind him.  (Wouldn't it be nice if it were a "her" for once?  Totally off-topic tangent...)

It says a lot about Jim Webb that he's won you over - I know you're not an easy sell, and when a candidate really inspires you, you're worth more than your weight in gold as a supporter!

Ooops.  I mean you're great...  It never pays to not preview.
