Listen here for Delegate Donald McEachin's statement earlier today on Jim's views on Affirmative Action.

McEachin first quotes Webb on Affirmative Action and diversity programs, and specially Webb's view thtat they "should focus principally on African Americans due to their unique historical conditions."

McEachin then goes on to say:

I'm here to tell you that this is as powerful a statement in support of Affirmative Action as I've heard from any candidate for any office in the time that I've been a Democrat or an elected office holder.

Nice.  And hopefully that puts to rest forevermore the phony "issue" of Jim Webb's views on Affirmative Action for African Americans.

Very nice comment and add to that Webb's awareness that the middle class is under attack through economic methods and you have a sure fire true representative of the people.

So glad Delegate McEachin reiterated that quote.

I wonder if there is a plan for Del McEachin to make some robo calls in the area.  His endorsement and comments are great news for Webb.

Lowell-

I like James Webb...but I hope his leftward shift has an end...or people like me will stop supporting him.

sane reasoning (TurnVirginiaBlue - 5/30/2006 11:19:36 PM)
I think you'll be fine.  What I get out of Webb, originally not being familiar, is he is prudent and rationale.

Webb is a Jacksonian Populist (Lowell - 5/31/2006 5:19:22 AM)
Always has been.  Always will be.  He trusts the people! :)  Ha.

Seriously, though, I wouldn't say Webb is shifting "leftward," but staying about the same.  Here's how Webb describes himself politically:

"I would describe myself as conservative on national defense, populist on economic issues, and a social moderate."

What Webb says is that he's stayed abou the same while the national Republican Party has moved radically rightward the past few years.  On Bush's Iraq adventure, for instance, Webb has consistently opposed that war.  On social issues, Webb's fundamental belief is that government should not come in our front door unless there's a strong, overriding reason to do so.  That philosophy leads him to be pro choice ("with Roe v. Wade"), pro-civil unions, and pro-2nd Amendment.  Interesting combination, I'd say.

On immigration, Webb appears to be very similar to John Warner and the Senate immigration bill - secure the borders but treat iilegal immigrants in the country humanely and give them an earned path to citizenship.

Any specific issues that concern you?

I hope the campaign gets Del.McEachin, and teh other hi-profile endorsers--to do some calling and mailing to their constituents for Jim.  Most voters won't even be aware of the endorsements unless they hit them via their phones or mailboxes.
And nationally--what is Harry Reid doing to help out?
