Miller's negativity is such a turnoff (JennyE - 5/24/2006 11:10:32 AM)
I hope Webb counters with a very positive ad.

Yes, the negativity (Ingrid - 5/24/2006 4:13:23 PM)
is bad.  But Jim Webb looks so handsome in the ad, and so senatorial.

What a geemrod! (Josh - 5/24/2006 11:31:08 AM)
Miller sounds like a hampster on helium.  Anyone who listens to that commercial will instantly hate Miller.

At least Kilgore's advisors told him to hide out.  Whoever is advising Miller should be shipped off to Alaska, and Miller should do a full background check to make sure they're not really working for Webb.

Miller's Ad (Ken C. - 5/24/2006 12:59:22 PM)
Jenny and Josh, I agree with both your statements, but we should not sit on our butts. Some kind of response should be in order and NOW!! Yeah he does sound like a hampster on helium, but the voters are hearing something.  While we here are obviously "tuned in", most folks aren't and if all they see is "The Shiller", even in a hampster on helium mode, they just might buy his bullshit.  Jenny's right, a positive message, with the gravatas that Jim brings to bear will snuff this out right away and be good for getting Jim "face time" for the general election.

Agreed... (Loudoun County Dem - 5/24/2006 1:02:08 PM)
This was the way Kaine countered the Kilgore ads but does the Webb campaign have the funds to respond?

Miller's Ad (Ken C. - 5/24/2006 1:06:57 PM)
That is the $64,000.00 question.

That's what I'm worried about (JennyE - 5/24/2006 1:31:07 PM)
I don't know if the Webb campaign can afford a counter TV ad.

Please, everyone stop worrying. (phriendlyjaime - 5/24/2006 1:35:49 PM)
Please read the diary by Dan, and my diary on thanking Harris Miller.  Virginians aren't stupid, they just need to hear the facts, and letters to the editor (use Lowell's link-AWESOME) and PHONEBANKING helps so much more than these stupid TV ads and his lame-oh robo calls ever will.  Just please, stop putting your energy into worrying and bitching, and help the campaign by volunteering.

For all of our passion for Jum Webb, there should not be any Webb supporters here that aren't helping out, plain and simple.  And it is really disappointing if people aren't willing to help get Jim elected through grassroots efforts.

It's game time folks, and there is no whining or crying in primary season.

There is (Arturo - 5/24/2006 3:45:30 PM)
no way I am going to vote for this guy IF he wins the primary.  He is disintegrating any type of Democratic support that he could get after the primary.  Disgusting!

Free Publicity (JPTERP - 5/25/2006 12:41:31 AM)
I'll be curious to see how this one plays.  I'm guessing that this one was tested in front of a focus group of strongly Democratic, highly motivated primary voters who  probably live somewhere inside the Beltway.  I wouldn't be at all surprised if this one backfires.  Keep in mind, this is an open primary.  For disillusioned Allen voters and Reagan Democrats, the ad's message says "So you've been looking for a viable alternative to politics as usual: Meet Jim Webb."  Alternatively, for those who don't know who Webb is, this ad may prompt them to do their due diligence--the ad naturally raises the question, "OK, so why is this guy Jim Webb running as a Democrat in 2006?"  The ad never really answers the question.  We have a solid response (score another for Webb).  One of the biggest problems that Webb faces is that a lot of voters don't even know who he is.  It's not ideal that Miller is defining his opponent first, but for highly motivated, information hungry voters (read primary voters) this could very easily play out against Miller.  The only real plus that I see for Miller is the Warner one-time "advisor" canard.  Lazy voters may take this gross overstatement at face value.  "Ah yes, Harris Miller was one of Mark Warner's closest advisors--if he was good enough for Mark Warner, he's good enough for me." (A bad joke) The bottom line: Miller's advisors are making the most of a bad situation.  Their candidate is an incredibly tough sell.  They would probably be better off not even acknowledging that there is an alternative to Harris Miller (as was done with the one Harris Miller phone poll).  Of course, I'm not the one getting paid the big consulting bucks, so what do I know.

Counter Miller and Recruit Webb Supporters (Info_Tech_Guy - 5/25/2006 4:13:18 PM)
Take some time and call your local union halls. Ask to speak with the union local presidents. Advise them of Harris Miller's anti-union/anti-worker stances (which they already know about) and ask if they would mind if you could post some material about Jim Webb on their notices board and perhaps speak with some of the rank and file to make a pitch for support and volunteers. Energise the rank and file and you will have Jim Webb advocates who will talk to their friends and family about Miller.
