Not Ready to Make Nice

The Dixie Chicks took a whole lot of flak a couple years ago for speaking out against the war. They were blacklisted from country radio stations and got death threats from some who had once been fans. They didn't back down, and though much of the country was too myopic to see it at the time, they were right about the war. Now they're back, starting Wednesday, with a new album called "Taking the Long Way." If you go to DixieChicks.com you'll hear their song "Not Ready to Make Nice," (lyrics) an anthem for this 2006 race if ever there was one. Tell me if this isn't how you feel about politics in this country today:

I'm through, with doubt,
There's nothing left for me to figure out,
I've paid a price, and i'll keep paying

I'm not ready to make nice,
I'm not ready to back down,
I'm still mad as hell
And I don't have time
To go round and round and round
...
I made by bed, and I sleep like a baby,
With no regrets and I don't mind saying,
It's a sad sad story
That a mother will teach her daughter
that she ought to hate a perfect stranger.
And how in the world
Can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they'd write me a letter
Saying that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over

Listen to the whole song, it's worth 3 minutes of your time. More than being just a song or a band, the Dixie Chicks are part of a larger progressive movement, building and representing progressive culture to an audience quite unused to it. So show the Dixie Chicks some love and say thanks for speaking truth to millions of Americans who wanted anything but that.
