"The Worst Candidate I Have Ever Seen"

According to Virginia Virtual Conservative, the quote in this article's title is from University of Virginia Professor Larry Sabato.  According to VVC, Sabato also called the candidate in question "a joke" who "won't even look you in the eye when he is talking to you."

Who's Larry Sabato talking about?  According to the VVC, "None other than 2006 Democrat senate hopeful Harris Miller."

Ouch.

Unfortunately, Sabato reportedly also said that "neither Miller nor Webb would defeat George Allen in November," that "Webb would make it more interesting than Miller, but they would both ultimately lose."

We'll see about that.  My take on this election is that Jim Webb has a definite shot at Allen, but Webb will have to run a superb, well-funded campaign to do it.  If so, Webb can win, because he can compete in all "four Virginias" and because he's got the national security "cred" that Allen completely lacks.  In addition, Webb can win over veterans, "Reagan Democrats," Independents, and other rural/red voters.  In other words, Webb can perform like Mark Warner did in 2001, except possibly even better because Warner ran at a time when a post-9/11 President Bush was at 90% approval, while right now, Bush is hovering at 30%.  This year, in other words, there's a major headwind for George Allen and for all Republican candidates.  Back in 2000, the wind was at their backs.  Big change.

By the way, tomorrow's an important day in the Webb vs. Miller contest, with a debate being taped in Norfolk for broadcast on Sunday at 10:30 am on WVEC-TV, Norfolk's ABC affiliate.  Good luck to Jim Webb; don't forget to ask Harris Miller why he supported the Iraq invasion and the Bush tax cuts for rich people!

And the jobs (Arturo - 5/18/2006 9:29:02 PM)
that Miller helped export. I hope that job outsourcing and worker replacement comes up in the debate.  It's about time that people start paying attention.  Eventually, they will find out that Webb is the real, populist Democrat in this race.

Webb does have a shot (Too Conservative - 5/19/2006 12:40:10 AM)
Without a doubt.

Something tells me many GOPers will vote for him.

Debate (TurnVirginiaBlue - 5/19/2006 1:41:42 AM)
Is it going to be available streamed/podcast somewhere later?

GO WEBB!

Good question... (Lowell - 5/19/2006 5:21:59 AM)
I'm not sure.

Someone, please record it to DVD! (Info_Tech_Guy - 5/19/2006 8:11:53 AM)
Don't rely on the debate host media to make it available afterward.

YES. (phriendlyjaime - 5/19/2006 9:31:41 AM)
Someone needs to record this, and we need to set up viewings by cities.  I phonebanked last night, and while a handful of people I called had heard of Jim Webb, only 2 were strongly for him, a few more were leaning, and MOST were undecided.

WHY were they undecided?

They had no idea there was another election.  One woman made a comment about how we just voted for governor and President, she had no idea there was another race going on; is it really that important, she asked.  YES, I replied.

There's more...but it may be diary material.  Plus...I don't want to give anyone else from, aHEM, another side, any ammunition.

Glad to see Sabato diss Miller-- (summercat - 5/19/2006 9:34:02 AM)
wish he did it on issues as well.  I think that, though Sabato thinks of himself as really dialed in, he has no inkling of the force of a Jim Webb candidacy.  However, it's a must that Jim sweep the primary by a huge margin.
