Webb's Stature Grows on Wise Choices

Today's edition, leesburg2day.com details a very telling exchange between Jim Webb and a devoted Leesburg Democrat hungry to unseat George Allen.

[...] Stanley Kreisberg let it fly. +óGé¼+ôI don+óGé¼Gäót think you have enough fire in your belly to do this,+óGé¼-¥ the current Leisure World resident said about Webb+óGé¼Gäós chances of unseating Sen. George Allen (R). Kreisberg, 77, was dismayed that Webb didn+óGé¼Gäót take the chance to hammer Allen after a recent article in The New Republic chronicled what that writer deemed was a questionable legislative and personal history on the history of race, and the embrace of the Confederate flag during his career.

Jim Webb knows low politics when he sees it, and he's not looking to drive his chances, his party, or his country in to the ground by losing his composure to take a few cheap shots against Virginia's most reactionary Senator.

+óGé¼+ôThat is somebody doing journalism about, among other things, [Allen+óGé¼Gäós mother+óGé¼Gäós] belly button,+óGé¼-¥ Webb said. +óGé¼+ôThat+óGé¼Gäós not the kind of politics I want to get into.+óGé¼-¥

It's precisely this kind of statesmanship that last week lead nearly the entire leadership of the US Senate to endorse Jim Webb's candidacy.  Jim Webb is going to win this election on his own terms.  Jim Webb was "born fighting".  As long as Allen keeps it clean, he'll lose, because Jim Webb is the better candidate.  If George Allen gets dirty, he'll lose, because Jim Webb will ensure that he reaps the whirlwhind.

But then Webb qualified his statement. If Allen+óGé¼Gäós high-profile political team+óGé¼GÇ¥and the candidate was sure to add +óGé¼+ôhe+óGé¼Gäóll have Mary Matalin to go on [Don] Imus+óGé¼-¥ and attack me, Dick Wadhams, former advisor to John Thune who unseated Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, and former National GOP Chairman Ed Gillespie+óGé¼GÇ¥goes negative, a response will follow shortly.

+óGé¼+ôIf they come after me, he has a fight,+óGé¼-¥ Webb said. +óGé¼+ôI+óGé¼Gäóve been fighting all of my life.+óGé¼-¥

Jim Webb is going to defeat George Allen in 2006 precisely the way Tim Kaine defeated Jerry Kilgore in 2005.  Based on integrity, based on strength, based on a record of service and values he shares with ALL of Virginia, Jim Webb will fight the kind of fight that will make all of us proud.

If George Allen wasn't afraid of Jim Webb before, he certainly should be now.  George Allen will fall for one reason:  Jim Webb is a better man.

He may take heat for not attacking Allen at every turn, but he is doing this the smart way, and is clearly the better man, and better Democrat.  May he prevail.  Our future could change for the better if he does.
