This just in from the Webb campaign.

Democratic Senators Unite Behind Jim Webb

Democratic Leaders Reid, Durbin and Daschle among Senators Supporting Webb

Jim Webb received today support from seven past and present Senate Democrats including Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid, former Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle, Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin, Senator and former Chairman of the Democratic National Committee Christopher Dodd, Senator Ken Salazar, Democratic Senator Tim Johnson and former Senator Max Cleland.

+óGé¼+ôJim Webb is an American hero and a genuine leader who will candidly bring the issues to the attention of the people of Virginia instead of rubberstamping the failed agenda of this President,+óGé¼-¥ said Senator Cleland. +óGé¼+ôDemocrats should do everything we can to get him elected to the Senate.+óGé¼-¥

Jim Webb is a decorated Marine, former Secretary of the Navy and Assistant Secretary of Defense, an award-winning author and widely respected journalist.  Webb was awarded, among other decorations, the Navy Cross and Silver Star for valor as a Marine.

+óGé¼+ôJim Webb will be a strong voice of the people in the United States Senate,+óGé¼-¥ said Senator Johnson. +óGé¼+ôAs the Senator from South Dakota, I have a great deal of respect for the thoughtful way that Jim Webb connects his rural American roots to his vision for the Democratic Party. He is a unique candidate who can both clearly articulate Democratic values and compel voters across all demographics to vote Democrat.+óGé¼-¥

+óGé¼+ôI am deeply grateful for the support of all of these Senators today. This group shows the diversity of support that will propel my campaign to victory over George Allen in November,+óGé¼-¥ said Webb. +óGé¼+ôThey represent states from all four corners of America.  Their support demonstrates that our message can unify Democrats and expand the party.  These Senators are an important part of the Democratic Party and have been among the party+óGé¼Gäós strongest leaders.  With their support, I look forward to beating George Allen and working with them in the Senate.+óGé¼-¥

Wow, this is impressive.  And something tells me there's a lot more where these came from.  Congratulations to Jim Webb, the next great Senator from Virginia!

[UPDATE:  From the National Journal's Hotline Blog:

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee doesn't endorse in primaries, and you won't ever hear Sen. Chuck Schumer (D) say bad things about Harris Miller (D).

But --

The endorsement of James Webb (D) today by Sens. Harry Reid and Dick Durbin seems to be tacit recognition that nat'l Dems want Webb as their nominee.

National Dems want Miller out of the race, and soon.

'nuff said.

Miller can't beat those endorsements (Craig - 5/10/2006 3:08:32 PM)
I mean damn, Cleland?  Reid?  Durbin?  Salazar?  Who would Miller get to top those names?

Dude... (phriendlyjaime - 5/10/2006 3:11:59 PM)
Forget Miller.  I don't know many others who COULD beat those endorsements, and here we have someone brand new, in a state known for being RED!  This is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Awesome (JennyE - 5/10/2006 3:11:50 PM)
These are great endorsements for the Webb campaign. I hope Miller drops out now.

are these actually endorsements, or just support?  You know...liberal progressive word crazies need to know....oh, and if you get a chance, pop into the Kos for an answer to this; people want a title change.  AGAIN.  ;)

Yes, they're endorsements. (Lowell - 5/10/2006 4:51:20 PM)
That's usually what "support" means.  Those Kossacks can really be something, eh?

Yeah, "something" is the word. ;) (phriendlyjaime - 5/10/2006 5:00:15 PM)

Thank GOD! (TurnVirginiaBlue - 5/10/2006 9:50:56 PM)
I was starting to worry there.  Oh lord help us if the Democratic party stood behind one of the most hated lobbyists by the American worker.

Whew!

great news (AlecBGreen - 5/11/2006 1:29:28 AM)
I had a dream about Webb last night ... really wierd. We met at some conference center, some place overlooking the Chesapeake bay. I shook his hand and we chatted about something, cant remember what. Then I woke up. I can truly say this is the 1st time a politician has made it into my dreams. lol Could this be a sign?

This is great news!! (summercat - 5/11/2006 9:34:15 AM)
and i hope, the hand writing on the wall for Harris Miller.  But I also hope that Webb doesn't back off on direct outreach to primary voters--hopefully via direct mail, since a lot of those voters probably are in the non-wired group.
