Well, well, isn't this a big surprise. The Media General-owned Richmond Times-Dispatch (RTD) is attacking Jim Webb ("a former Reagan-era Republican who has morphed into an anti-war protester caricaturing Howard Dean" - ha!). Gee, I wonder why THAT is? Could it be that the RTD editorial board - tool that it is of the Republican Party, Eric Cantor, and George Allen - has decided they are TERRIFIED of Jim Webb's candidacy for Senate? A bit concerned that their boy George is in trouble? Nah, that couldn't be it, now could it?Eric Cantor, of course, is on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, which writes tax law among other things. According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch news page (as opposed to right-wing editorial board), "that's an important assignment -- one that gives Cantor a leg up in soliciting contributions from big business..."
Interestingly, Media General has also been "working very, very hard to get federal antitrust regulations overturned." You think having friends in high places like Eric Cantor and George Allen might help Media General achieve this goal?
By the way, the RTD "enthusiastically" endorsed George Allen for Senate in 2000, bizarrely declaring that Allen "embraces that progressive tradition [of Ronald Reagan]." Huh? Progressive? George Allen? What am I misssing here? Does "progressive" now mean "conservative?" And what's all this malarky from the RTD about Allen being about "fresh thinking," "trust in (and of) Virginians," and "devotion to Jeffersonian principles." What. Ever.
Finally, since the RTD is so concerned all of a sudden with Affirmative Action, I wonder when it will call on George Allen to stop opposing it, including requiring companies to hire more minorities. I'm not holding my breath; how about you?
