Wonkette is a Disrespectful Idiot

Wonkette is/are a disrespectful idiot(s), calling Jim Webb's decision to wear combat boots (to honor his Marine son and others deployed in Iraq) a "gimmick."  Wonkette adds, "Beautiful. Oh, you+óGé¼Gäóre still gonna lose, but nice work."

As I said, "disrespectful idiot(s)" about sum it up. But what do you expect from a blog whose tagline is: "Politics for people with dirty minds," and who the New York Times called "Gossipy, raunchy, potty-mouthed."  Ahhh....the best of the blogosphere.  Not.

Uh... (The Ditzy Democrats - 4/26/2006 9:34:09 AM)
Lowell, I hate to break it to you this way, but you have a picture of Ana Marie Cox up there.

Ana Marie does not write Wonkette anymore. David and Alex do. Ana Marie wouldn't say something like that.

Well she might, but she didn't. It's two guys now, and so I think that maybe the picture of Ana Marie needs to come down- it's presenting a false image. Use the little cartoon on the top of the page, but don't involve Ana Marie in this, 'cause she didn't do it.

Melissa

Got it... (Lowell - 4/26/2006 9:36:20 AM)
thanks!

Wonkett is 2 guys!? (Josh - 4/26/2006 9:51:17 AM)
Oh, man!  That just doesn't make sense.

Correct (Laura86 - 4/26/2006 11:02:03 AM)
Wonkette was at its best when Ana Marie Cox did all the blogging...I would literally "LOL".  Now it's just kind of...blah...

Gimmick? (Alicia - 4/26/2006 10:06:31 AM)
It works for me.
First - boot Allen!
Second - it's touching.  As he laces up the Marine Corps suede boots every morning, you know what he is doing this for, and where his mind is at.
Unlike the people who voted for this crazy war/invasion/occupation.

Liberals... (Virginia Centrist - 4/26/2006 10:25:19 AM)
This is a perfect example of how liberals just don't get it on cultural issues or issues of national security...

Please... (phriendlyjaime - 4/26/2006 11:32:57 AM)
don't lump all liberals into the same bad uninformed pile.  Some of us have liberal views, but we understand the politics of politics too.  :)

Please... (Maura in VA - 4/26/2006 4:56:25 PM)
Wonkette (that is, the two guys who write "Wonkette") are hardly representative of all liberals.  How do you know they are liberal, anyway?  Like far too many so-called Democrats, they spend more time skewering fellow Democrats than mocking and criticizing Republicans.

Um... (phriendlyjaime - 4/27/2006 1:21:33 PM)
I don't.  I know nothing about them, bc frankly, their blog is lame; it looks like a 14 year old's diary.

I do hope (phriendlyjaime - 4/27/2006 1:22:05 PM)
you were speaking to VA Centrist, and NOT to me.

It's an example of idiots who don't do their research (Info_Tech_Guy - 4/26/2006 10:54:44 AM)
and jumping to conclusions... Or Miller/Allen supporters using this an opportunity to heap derision on Jim Webb.

Frankly, I consider it insulting and shameful. For me, it shows that every day that Jim Webb campaigns, he remembers the Americans in our military who are serving their country and who deserve sane political leadership.

Do these "bonkers wonkers" also blog on "Powerline"?

Jerks.

George Allen, "popular incumbent"?? (Bubby - 4/26/2006 11:17:07 AM)
Has the Wonkette heard that the "popular incumbent" has a net approval rating in Virginia of 11%?
George Allen

Bottom Line... (phriendlyjaime - 4/26/2006 11:37:44 AM)
They are mad that they have to go back and take back everything they said about how Miller was so great when Webb wasn't running.  If you HONESTLY suuport Miller over Webb, well, you either work for Miller, work in IT and don't think that outsourcing can happen to you, or you are just an uninformed Dem with your head in the ground.

And, they are as snotty as Allen supporters about it.  Go ahead, throw the bad attitude around; we are perfectly happy being the calm, cool, collected WINNERS.  :)

Key fact here is that Wonkette isn't even an "ette" anymore (JC - 4/26/2006 11:34:53 AM)
Just a couple of guys who, what?  Did they buy the blog from Wonkette?  Are they her employees?

Are they Virginians?

Lowell, send this off the front page: they don't merit this kind of free publicity.

Someone's gimmick... (Mimi Schaeffer - 4/26/2006 12:10:13 PM)
Lowell, I can understand your outrage.

But...

As someone you thought the Robert Menendez idea to give drivers a temporary federal gas tax break and take back the tax breaks in last year's energy bill was a great idea, sometimes folks just don't agree with what we think.

Yet, no one was disrespectful; and the snark directed at Webb, the man who WILL BE THE NEXT VIRGINIA SENATOR is totally uncalled for.

I never go to Wonkette's Web site since Ana Marie Cox left; it ain't funny and it ain't news.

What have they done for us? (Wasim E - 4/26/2006 12:34:18 PM)
My dear friends,

It dose not matter if Mr. Webb is a Republican or a Democrat, or if the candidate is male or female, black or white, it dos not madder.
What madder is, if the candidate is some one that is not fearful of voicing his opinion, it madder that we do know that he is not tinted by Washington special interest lobbyist! Furthermore, and the must important things that he has served his country and he did not hide behind his dad's money. My friends Jim Webb will not be a rubber stamp for the white house; Mr. Webb is going to do his job and represent his constituents. By the way Jim has earned his combat boots that he will be warring during the campaign, but when I checked on the cowboy boots, I found they where inherited from the wealthy daddy!

This is the time for the true patriots to start questioning our white House, and our congress like what Jim did, question if they are doing their jobs? If they are serving our country? Our people? Our elderly? Our veterans? Our children’s?  Our manufactures? Our workers? Our educators? Our doctors? Our poor? Our soldiers?  If they are serving our United State of America?

They are an public officials, and they where elected by us, and they have to answer to us.

Dear friends,
It is the time to clean up Washington.
See you November 2006.

Well... Jim Webb has been in combat... (Loudoun County Dem - 4/26/2006 12:37:19 PM)
When, exactly, was George Allen a cowboy???

Oh, Get Over It! (K - 4/26/2006 12:43:05 PM)
If your skin is too thin to handle a funny from Wonkette, you're definitely not going to be able to handle a general election if Webb wins the primary and has to deal with the dreck and dross that will be coming from Allen and his henchmen!

Goo grief -- the boots are a gimmick. A silly gimmick, granted, but a simple attention-getting device that might get Webb some attention and help plant a few thoughts in peoples heads (particularly if the combat boots of a veteran are properly contrasted with the empty strutting cowboy boots of Little Georgie).

I wouldn't have chosen combat boots but, hell, at least they're cheaper than sponsoring a Nascar car or some similar gimmick.

Big difference. (Lowell - 4/26/2006 1:04:53 PM)
Jim Webb really IS a combat veteran and his son really IS a Marine who's headed for combat in Iraq.

George Allen really is NOT a cowboy.

I see nothing humorous about this, whether it's coming from Wonkette or Dick Wadhams.

Webb is entitled to his shows, Allen isn't (Rebecca - 4/26/2006 1:13:54 PM)
Webb is really a veteran, is Miller? Miller's shoes are lobbyist's shoes, Webb's are soldier's shoes, Allen's are Dude Ranch (phoney cowboy)shoes.

The boots are not a gimmick (Greg Bouchillon - 4/26/2006 1:34:20 PM)
I guess some people would think that, but I think it's a good gesture, it sends a message. I appreciate it, especially since his kid is going over there, and not Jenna and Barbara (although, I thank god for that).

Having said that, come on Lowell. Who really gives a shit? I like wonkette, (better with Cox, but they're still ok), and honestly, ignore it. I expect better of you.

Gimmick, but a good one. (thegools - 4/26/2006 2:20:47 PM)
Webb rocks.

Anything deliberate like this is a gimmick.

Allen's boots= Gimmick.
Webb's boots= Gimmick.

Only Webb's has some substance behind them, some history, and they symbolize an issue(s) that he wants to bring attention to besides a pair of boots.  Not so for Allen.  It is interesting how the shoes seem to help define the man (and vise versa) in these three.

....
Oh yeah one more......
Miller's being a hard-core Democrat= Gimmick?

George Allen = All hat, no cattle (Loudoun County Dem - 4/26/2006 3:14:23 PM)

Another one... (Rebecca - 4/26/2006 3:17:11 PM)
George Allen, big boots.... full of bull.

Did you hear the one about the Texan they buried in a shoe box? Hmmmmm. This discussion is beginning to get circular.

If the shoe fits... (Rebecca - 4/26/2006 3:14:34 PM)
Yep, I can now spell shoe. I've tried wearing cowboy boots and the toes really hurt my feet. I've always marveled at how people will wear uncomfortable shoes to make a fashion statement. Now shoes have also become a political statement.

On that topic, if a woman wore a pair of combat boots with an evening gown that would make both a fashion and a political statement, like screw this silly dress-up game.

Combat boots with a gown.. (Rebecca - 4/26/2006 3:18:41 PM)
The statement: I hate to dress up...let's get out of Iraq.

Word, Lowell (Luna - 4/26/2006 4:54:10 PM)
Although, it's not really Wonkette that's the disrespectful idiot, but whichever new replacement editor she's sold her blog name off to.

Like I commented at NLS, Wonkette hasn't been worth reading at all since Ana Marie Cox left to write books & the occasional op-ed piece. It's sad, really - that used to be one of my favorite blogs.

Take this boot and shove it! (Rick O'Dell - 4/26/2006 10:57:28 PM)
I still have the last pair of combat boots I wore in Vietnam.  If they still fit I'll wear them again in honor of Webb's campaign.

Combat boots, worn by real soldiers and veterans are a statement of principle.  They and their wearers have gone where only the courageous dare walk.  Conversely, cowboy boots worn by a city boy are nothing more than a bad fashion statement.  It is the latter that is the superficial political gimmick.

Hey Wonkette -- walk a mile in another's mocassins before you pontificate!

Stop Gawking! (jonl - 4/28/2006 3:48:02 PM)
I think the whole Gawker Media approach (especially Wonkette) represents a cynicism that is socially and culturally destructive...

See http://www.greaterdemocracy.org/archives/000468.html

I agree (Lowell - 4/28/2006 3:53:58 PM)
We need more idealism, not cynicism, in this country right now.  And we certainly don't need cynicism and defeatism from the "blue" team.
