Webb Signs, 10,000. Miller Signs, 2 or 3.

A sea of Webb signs, with nary a Miller sign to be seen (apparently, Miller thought it was a waste of time and money to compete in the Shad Planking sign war...I wonder).

Now, the entire Harris Miller presence at the Shad Planking. Wow.

Sorry I am not down there . . . (Kip - 4/19/2006 9:26:27 PM)
I have a question for the people down there, does Miller have any volunteers with him who are not paid staffers?

As far as I could tell... (Lowell - 4/19/2006 9:32:08 PM)
...it was the same 2 or 3 Miller staffers we all see at every event.  Not trying to be "negative" here, but I honestly don't think Miller has any grassroots support out there to speak of.

MILLER GOT CRUUUUSHEDD!!!

I have a BIG new story brewing on my site.

I am simply reporting the facts here...you won't like the story...

Actually, a lot of the time, it's labor that does the sweat work ... (AnonymousIsAWoman - 4/19/2006 9:36:15 PM)
and puts out the signs for candidates. Labor is pretty weak in Virginia, but they can get out their vote, contribute a little bit of money and they will walk the precincts, phone bank, and put up your signs.

Gee, maybe that's why Miller is having so much trouble in the sign war.  Labor may stay "neutral" but don't count on them to do the sweat equity for him.

I hear that on labor as well.  Call it creative collective bargaining...

Deeply sad performance by Miller. (Susan Mariner - 4/19/2006 10:11:36 PM)
People running unopposed had more signs.  I felt really sorry for Miller.  It was very sad.

Agreed. Why did Miller even show up... (Lowell - 4/19/2006 10:16:47 PM)
if he thought it was such a waste of time and money?

By the way, Harris, we are planning to re-use these signs, so how was it a waste of money?  (also, we relied 99% on free, grassroots, volunteer labor, as usual; what a concept!).

I know. (Susan Mariner - 4/19/2006 10:30:37 PM)
Not sure what Miller's people were thinking, but I really think he would have been better served not to show up at all and try to give some type of excuse.  As it was, I can only describe his showing as pathetic.  It'll be interesting to see how the press handle this.  I spoke with reporters from all over the state.  They were universally impressed with Webb's signage.  Another great job by Webb volunteers!  A truly awesome sight!

It was a beautiful thing - truly. (Kathy Gerber - 4/19/2006 10:16:20 PM)
On the highway going in, there would be one big Allen sign then it was surrounded by HUNDREDS of small Webb signs.. sort of symbolic.  And this happened over and over and over - it was just unbelievable.

It was great is all I can say.. I don't know how I kept missing Lowell - I kept asking about you, Lowell, and would always get - well, he was just here. I did meet not Larry Sabato and Corey. Allen even bused in people so they did dominate in the numbers. But we clearly, and I mean clearly, dominated in spirit.  Lots of the Repos really were looking at us wistfully.. they wanted to have fun too I guess.  And they did join in a bit.

We had a big group right at the edge of the parking lot where everyone had to cross (near the Allen boots truck - that was just plain damned strange).  A super super lady, Betty, was giving people stickers - she is so cool.  She had plenty of people who already had taken an Allen sticker also take a Webb sticker :)

I can't decide - who is the loudest, phriendlyjaime or Susan??  and folks were paying attention - whoo hooo!!!!

When Jim finally drove in we were so excited, and you could tell that he was moved, but of course, he got a grip by the time he walked over.  Even I teared up when I saw the signs coming in.

So we followed him in, a whole stream of us holding up our signs, and a large group of people wearing blue Allen shirts had to make way for us, and for a split second it was like the sea parting.  Then we hit congestion, and I got a chance to turn around, and could not believe our group.

And William, what a sweetheart, gave me a desert hat, so I had it decorated it with Webb stickers.  Thank you, William!  I was only kidding about Iran - but then you worried me for a second.

We finally made it to the band still as a group and we were all bouncing our signs to the rhythm of the music.  It was just great.  And then there was just this spontaneous dancing.  Well, one woman's feet are going to be on TV news somewhere.

My piece of shad was not bony at all, and the beans were to die for.

Note to all: (Susan Mariner - 4/19/2006 10:31:58 PM)
Kathy Gerber rocks!

Oh, and... (Susan Mariner - 4/19/2006 10:33:51 PM)
I have no more voice.  We'll have to see how friendlyjaime faired :)  Webb's volunteers were truly MUCH more enthusiastic and loud than Allen's.

No! (Kathy Gerber - 4/19/2006 10:40:55 PM)
YOU rock!

YOU ALL ROCK!!!!! (phriendlyjaime - 4/20/2006 8:23:53 AM)
And my voice is fine, but my sunburn is my punishment.  If anyone thought I was over the yop with my yelling, or too excitable, well, I am paying for it with pain.

BUT IT WAS STILL AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Kathy (JennyE - 4/19/2006 10:36:22 PM)
Really nice write-up. It looks like it was a big success for the Webb team. Kudos to you guys!

Thanks, JennyE (Kathy Gerber - 4/19/2006 11:02:41 PM)
The real kudos go to all of the people who worked so hard on the signs. I dawdled this a.m., took a few wrong turns, and did not really do my share with that.

And I hope you get to go to one of the events.  It's just nice to get out there and be a part of something so special.

As some point today I told Susan that I hate the Tidewater.  On the ride home there was plenty of time to think about that, and the truth is that I spent a lot of time down there when I was young. And through personal experiences I have it associated with sadness and loss.

On a purely selfish level, I am grateful for such a positive experience today to help gain a little perspective.

And I didn't mention that we had the chance to meet Jessica and Adrienne, Vic and Christen.  What wonderful people!  There were so many though that I forgot all their names.  I remember faces, but I'm so bad with names..

Damn, I must have been too late to meet you guys! (DanG - 4/19/2006 11:04:49 PM)
Thanks to my adoration of sleep and my long drive from Blacksburg to Wakefield, I showed up at about 4:15.  Most people had left already.  Shame I missed you guys.

ISorry we missed you. (Kathy Gerber - 4/19/2006 11:49:08 PM)
I'm sure to run into you since you're down at Blacksburg.

Oooppps (Nichole - 4/20/2006 9:10:02 AM)
I was still there with the Richmond people.... we stayed until 6:30 or so!
