Four-Star Gen. Joseph Hoar, former Commander in Chief of the United States Central Command, endorsed Jim Webb for United States Senate today.  General Hoar says +óGé¼+ôJim Webb is a Democrat with military credibility+óGé¼-¥

+óGé¼+ôJim Webb is the leader we need in the Senate to put our national securities priorities back on the right path,+óGé¼-¥ said Gen. Hoar. +óGé¼+ôHe is the only Senate candidate in Virginia with the foreign policy and military credentials to stand up against George Bush+óGé¼Gäós dangerous incompetence. If Virginia Democrats want to send a resounding message to President Bush by defeating George Allen, they should nominate Jim Webb.+óGé¼-¥

+óGé¼+ôJim and I have known each other for a long time,+óGé¼-¥ said Gen. Hoar. +óGé¼+ôWe haven+óGé¼Gäót always agreed on every issue, but I+óGé¼Gäóve always found all of his positions to be well thought out and respected throughout the entire military community. Today, I+óGé¼Gäóm endorsing Jim because we are in synch on the issues that matter most.+óGé¼-¥

Hoar commanded CENTCOM from 1991 to 1994. He served in this position during both the George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton presidencies.

+óGé¼+ôJoe and I agree that, at home and abroad, our nation is heading in the wrong direction,+óGé¼-¥ said Webb. +óGé¼+ôIt is my tremendous honor to receive the endorsement of one the most respected Marines and military commanders to ever serve.+óGé¼-¥

Jim Webb and Joseph Hoar are both highly decorated Marines. Webb received the Navy Cross, the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and two Purple Hearts for his actions in Vietnam. Hoar, also a Vietnam Veteran, was awarded three Defense Distinguished Medals, two Bronze Stars and two Meritorious Service Medals.

Since beginning his campaign for Senate less than a month ago, Webb has secured a number of high-profile endorsements, including Retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark, former U.S. Senator Bob Kerrey, former Lt. Governor Candidate Leslie Byrne, former Democratic whip of the Virginia House of Delegates Chap Petersen, former Virginia Senator Emilie Miller, Arlington County Board Member Jay Fisette, Arlington School Board Member Ed Fendley, Arlington County Treasurer Frank O+óGé¼GäóLeary and Arlington County Commissioner of Revenue Ingrid Morroy.

Webb needs to get this nomination! (DanG - 4/17/2006 1:22:15 PM)
If he does, we are the military strength in this election. We are the national security candidate.  We need Webb to run.  Miller can't win.  Webb can take it to Allen on every single issue.

National Security as Defining Issue--- Again (Teddy - 4/18/2006 10:38:09 AM)
The Republican game plan for the 2006 election has already been announced: national security, 9/11 etc etc. Flash the War on Terror, punch the Fear Button, denigrate Democrats as unpatriotic cut-and-run and so on ad nauseum. And now comes James Webb, Democrat, and all the Fighting Dems from Iraq. Sort of pulls the rug out from under the incompetent lying little Republican punks, doesn't it?

On top of that there are all the (retired) flag officers standing up and pointing out the godawful incompetence and poor leadership of this Republican Administration--- a completely unprecedented, almost incredible display of criticism unheard of in American military history, where civilian control of the military has always been firmly in place. How desperate, disgusted, and concerned these officers must be to criticize publicly like this.

The National Security issue is a knife turning in the hand of the Republicans. I guarantee they will spin and smear and attack in an effort to maintain their fiction of Republican leadership on national security. I hope Mr. Webb is prepared; he's already remarked on the Republicans' propensity to chant "support the troops" while smearing opponents' military service.
