Darrell Green and Rick Santorum: Soulmates

The caption from Rick Santorum's Senate website reads:
Traditional Marriage: Washington, DC - Senator Santorum is joined by former Washington Redskin Darrell Green, and performers Donnie McClurkin and Marvin Winans to publicly express support for the protection of traditional marriage during a press conference in the U.S. Capitol.

Lovely, eh?  Darrell Green - a possible Republican candidate in Virginia's 33rd State Senate District -  and Sen. Rick "Man on Dog" Santorum (R-PA) are political soulmates. Just what we need here in Virginia.  Not.

[UPDATE:  Please see Michael Shear's Washington Post article on Darrell Green.  Sen. Herring is quoted as saying:

[Green]'s a very popular football player and a star on the football field. I'm confident that my positions are consistent with those of the majority of the citizens in the district. I believe I'll be reelected next year.

Not surprising (Dan - 4/15/2006 5:23:48 PM)
If I was hit in the head as much as a professional football player (and Green played for nearly 20 years), I could see myself being brain damaged enough to support Santorum.

A Hot Football? (Teddy - 4/15/2006 7:25:33 PM)
Maybe Darrell and George Allen can toss footballs back and forth rather than having a serious discussion of the issues, which probably would be beyond them, anyway. And then all the inattentive good ol' boys can vote for them. You know, beer, gay marriage and family values, and all that.

It used to be that Republicans, desperate for a viable candidate, would run retired generals (like Ulysses S. Grant or Dwight D. Eisenhower). But guess that well is running dry now, with all the returning soldiers, includig flag officers, who are coming out for Democrats. So we can look forward to a spate of duh! football players and tired, I mean re-tired actors???
