George Allen Must Be Stopped!

George Allen is running around Iowa or New Hampshire, quietly hoping that James Webb will not make it past the Democratic primary.  Allen does not want Webb+óGé¼Gäós campaign to damage his hopes at reelection to the Senate or his run for President.  By now, many of you have read about James Webb and his notion of fairness.  You understand why many Democrats, and indeed many conservatives, support James Webb+óGé¼Gäós candidacy.  What you may not realize is just how important it is to defeat George Allen this November.  This man is a blight on the Senate and would make as bad (if not worse) a President than George W. Bush.  This guy's so bad, he doesn+óGé¼Gäót deserve to be elected dogcatcher in a town with only cats.
George Allen is a Senator who is 100% pro-business and 0% pro-environment, according to his voting record.  While he votes with pro-life groups about 100% of the time, he doesn+óGé¼Gäót seem very interested in actually preventing abortions.  In 2005, Allen voted against a budget amendment to "expand access to  preventive health care services that reduce unintended pregnancy (including teen pregnancy), reduce the number of abortions, and improve access to women's health care."  George Allen also doesn+óGé¼Gäót worry too much about people after they are born.  When it came time to vote on additional funding for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act to ensure that no child with special needs was left behind, Allen voted No.  When it came time to vote on expanding Pell Grants (a campaign promise made by President Bush in 2004), once again, Allen voted No

So what have we learned here?  George Allen will prevent women from having abortions legally, but will not support measures to prevent the cause of unwanted pregnancies.  George Allen will not help parents send their kids to college.  God help you if your child has special needs.  So the question is not +óGé¼+ôwhy vote for James Webb?+óGé¼-¥ The question is +óGé¼+ôwhy on earth would you vote for George Allen?+óGé¼-¥

What has George Allen done to deserve to be considered a Presidential candidate?  Is it his dismal voting record in the Senate?  His utter lack of productivitiy as Virginia+óGé¼Gäós Governor?  His opposition to official recognition of Martin Luther King Day when he was governor?

How has Allen gotten as far as he has? I can think of only one reason for the egregious pedestal that has been placed beneath Allen+óGé¼Gäós feet:  he has stayed safely under the radar.

While George W. Bush has embarrassed America with scandal after scandal, George Allen has shielded himself from blame.  While numerous Republicans have become the poster children for corruption and ignorance, Allen has played nice with the press and has kept the focus off of his own failings.

George Allen may not be brilliant, but he is smart enough to avoid the limelight for unpopular political issues or for being tied to corporate corruption.  Others have not been as smart:  Sen. Bill Frist (R-TN), who has been tarnished by his sale of stock and by his comments on AIDS and Terry Shiavo; Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA), who has been hurt by his comments on gays and many other issues; Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), who has been lambasted for his comments on judges; Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS), who was forced from his leadership position for his comments about Strom Thurmond and segregation; ex-Rep. Randall +óGé¼+ôDuke+óGé¼-¥ Cunningham (R-CA), convicted for accepting bribes; Rep. Tom DeLay (R-TX) for being Tom DeLay.  The list could go on until the bones in my fingers crack from incessant typing.

George Allen has somehow avoided scrutiny, but with James Webb as his challenger, that is all changing.  Already, Virginia+óGé¼Gäós Republican Senior Senator, John Warner, has indicated his admiration for Webb.  Allen has been forced to defend his ludicrous positions on immigration. He has struggled to answer questions about running for Senate and for President at the same time.  The tides are turning, and a victory for Webb in the primary would be like a tidal wave crashing on Allen+óGé¼Gäós campaign.

The reason that James Webb can defeat George Allen is credibility and appeal across party lines.  James Webb is running at the right time.  He is more attractive than Tim Kaine to conservatives, and Tim Kaine won districts in Virginia in 2005 that John Kerry lost in a landslide in 2004. Where James Webb is lacking is in exposure to the public and fundraising ability.  He will never be able to compete with George Allen in fundraising.  However, the more people see and hear James Webb, the more comfortable they feel about him.  I have heard a Republican say he would "absolutely vote for James Webb over George Allen."  I have heard a
Democrat exclaim: "That man is one of my heroes," when he heard of Webb+óGé¼Gäós candidacy.

So with that, I encourage you all to look at George Allen+óGé¼Gäós voting record, interest group ratings, and campaign financiers.  They are all available on the non-partisan information website: Project Vote Smart.  Remember that George Allen votes with President Bush 96% of the time.  The scary part is that most of that 4% where he didn+óGé¼Gäót vote with Bush, was reserved for times when Allen thought the President had been too liberal.  The time is now to expose George Allen, and stop him once and for all!

Bush too liberal?? (Alicia - 4/11/2006 11:50:39 AM)
That scares me!  So, Allen really scares me! This is a great post - and I'll be hanging on to some of the facts for "future battle"
96% in line with Bush should be any persons downfall.

Why??? (sharon f - 4/11/2006 12:30:16 PM)
Thanks for explaining in scary detail the horror that is Allen. Maybe the next article you write can explain how people allow  "pro lifers" such as Allen to not only work against abortion but against services for children who are alive.

But... (Rob - 4/11/2006 12:50:32 PM)
