Arlington Democrats Condemn Anti-Gay Marriage Amendment

Tonight, the Arlington County Democratic Committee (ACDC) unanimously passed a resolution condemning the so-called "marriage amendment" to the Virginia Constititution.  To read the entire resolution, please click here.  The gist of it is this: the Arlington Democratic Party "opposes discrimination based on sexual orientation, and deplores any proposal to write such discrimination into the Constitution of the Commonwealth."  Specifically, the Arlington Democrats believe that such an amendment "is antithetical to the concept of a Bill of Rights, and contains ambiguous language with potentially disastrous effects on governmental recognition of domestic relationships between unmarried individuals."
I couldn't agree more.  This monstrosity is an affront the Virginia Bill of Rights, written by George Mason and adopted by the Virginia state government in early 1776.  It must be defeated.  To quote Peter Rousellot, chair of the Arlington Democrats, the marriage amendment is a "terrible political stunt by Republicans," who are putting it on the ballot "when we have so many ohter pressing problems" - education, transporation, health care - to deal with.  According to Rousellot, this amendment needs to be sent "into the trash can" where it belongs.

Tonight, I was proud to be an Arlington Democrat.  Now, I urge the rest of my fellow Virginians to vote against this cynical, ill conceived, and dangerous amendment.  Frankly, even if you oppose "gay marriage," you should be against this amendment because it could adversely affect you too. That's right, this thing is so vaguely worded that there are actually questions about what it will do to "arrangements between unmarried couples of any sexual orientation."  It's bad enough this thing even made it to the ballot, but to enshrine it in George Mason's Bill of Rights would be contrary to everything we stand for in Virginia - and in America.  Let's send this thing to a resounding defeat in November, and in so doing, send a resounding message that we in Virginia will not stand for this divisive garbage.

I was speaking to a bunch of hardright GOPers tonight about this.

We all agreed...the amendment is just unneccesary and vicious.

If it stopped at the first sentence I would support it...but to continue on and stop any hope of civil unions ect. is ridiculous.

What kind of Christians want to spend ther lives ruining others lives?

We need to be civil on this issue as Republicans, and this amendment is not civil. If it passes it will be challenged and struck down.

Um, but wait, hasn’t Harris Miller said that he supports the Marriage Amendment “just like Tim Kaine and Mark Warner”?

Of course, I don’t I’ve ever heard Mark Warner or Tim Kaine endorse the Marriage Amendment, have you?

Jim Webb opposes the Marriage Amendment, supports civil unions and will fight to keep government out of Virginians’ private lives.

Supporting the Marriage Amendment: one more reason Harris Miller sucks.

It was also condemned unanimously as a resolution at the VA YD convention. I have faith that it’ll die at the polls.
