Goode's scandal that wouldn't die

The MZM-scandal has been hanging over Virgil Goode's head like a dark cloud ever since the scandal started heating up last year.  With Mitch Wade's guilty plea last week, the rain started falling down on ol' Virgil.

The scandal won't fade away, and Virgil has to keep addressing his colossal blunder.  First, he had to donate his MZM-tainted money to charity after Duke Cunningham pled guilty.  Now, with Mitch Wade heading to jail, Goode has felt the need to issue a two-page press release.  After a long and dizzying justification for the MZM facility at the center of this scandal, he gets to the heart of things:

At no time have I or, to my knowledge, any member of my staff been contacted by federal authorities investigating MZM.  With regard to the MZM donations, I do not know which were legal or which were illegally made. The court papers did not identify them.

Some MZM donations were made at events, some were mailed, and some were handed to
me or others for me.

I do not have an attorney. Since I have not done anything wrong, I see no reason to get
one.

Oh, Virgil.  I think thou dost protest a bit much, no?  Anyway, nowhere in his release does Rep. Goode explain his amazing lack of judgment in getting mixed up with master briber Mitch Wade in the first place.  I don't think we'll get a satisfying answer to that question any time soon.
