Webb on Colbert!

Let's just get this out in the open...I have an addiction.  If you try to bother me between 11:00 and 12:00, you'll notice it.  What is my addiction, and why is it have sucha strong hold on me?  My addiction is to the two greatest shows on television: "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" and "The Colbert Report."  I'm addicted because they are the best political satire programs on the planet.  I watch these shows religiously.  I'm serious, I haven't missed an episode since the two started showing back-to-back.  I even go as far to look at the Comedy Central Website on Friday to see who will be on the shows in advance.  I first looked at what Stewart had.  Quality guys, but nothing particularly exciting.  Then I went over to check out Colbert, and what I saw caused me to ran down the halls of my dorm screaming with joy, much to the ridicule of my pals.

For those of you who don't know what the Colbert Report is, allow me to explain.  Stephen Colbert plays...Stephen Colbert, but not really.  Colbert, who has adamantly shown his support for the Democratic Party in the past, especially during the last election, plays a character who is a parody O'Reilly and Hannity.  He pretends to be a hard-line, radical conservative, the whole time pointing out how ridiculous they sound.  It's a brilliant show.  Satire at its very best.

Now, back to my little story.  Why was I so excited?  I've been e-mailing Jon Stewart and Colbert frequently in an attempt to get Mark Warner or Tim Kaine on the show.  Sadly, neither show has spent much time on ol' Virginia.  Even when Kaine won last November, Stewart focused more on New Jersey, which is much closer to his base of operations (New York).  Colbert had Elliot Spitzer, the Democratic candidate for Governor of New York, on his show early on.  Later, Colbert had Barbara Boxer stop by.  Aside from a few politicians, though, Colbert mainly focused on other journalists and writers.  These were interesting interviews, but still no Virginians.

Ladies and Gentlemen, our luck is about to change.

If you go to the Colbert Report website, you will notice that on the schedule for next week is none other than "James Webb." That's right, OUR James Webb, the guy who's running for the Democratic nomination for Senate here in Virginia.  I don't know which day (it's not mentioned on the site) the Webb episode will play, but I know that it will be next week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday) at 11:30 PM on Comedy Central.

This bodes well for the Webb Campaign.  Apparently, Webb?s candidacy and story are interesting enough that the producers of the Colbert Report want him on there.  I get the strong feeling that this is only the beginning for Webb.

Anyway, tune in next week to Comedy Central and watch the Colbert Report at 11:30 PM.  That is, if you're interested in seeing a true American Hero and the next great Senator from Virginia.

[UPDATE by Lowell:  Webb's appearance on Colbert will be Wednesday, March 8.  Gentlemen, start your video captures! :)]

From the Colbert Website

Gives me the feeling that this interview is mostly going to be about why he became a Democrat.  Probably some Iraq war stuff too.

With upside-down congressional approval ratings showing few signs of rising from the depths anytime soon, 2006 promises to be one of the more volatile (and dare we say, anti-incumbent?) House election cycles in recent memory. So looking ahead to November, how best might Democrats and Republicans prepare to face this specter? For starters, we suggest each side begin by taking a page out of Comedy Central notable Stephen Colbert's playbook: take good, hard, looks at all kinds of House districts right now. "

Exposure pays off, especially when it is free.

I doubt Phil will go on the show, seeing as the race is about a very select group of people (the Second District).  Phil would do better to spend more time in Virginia Beach and the Eastern Shore.

This is such a great show (Colbert Report). I've loved Stewart for a long time but have grown dreary of the staleness, Colbert however is a hoot. His Watch a District episiodes are a boon to anyone interested in the House Races this year. As I also have NJ roots I've enjoyed that focus. Hopefully Colbert will get Phil Kellam D-2 to come on the show, given the districts past history with Shrock and current diva Drake there is alot of potential fodder for comedy.

I'll be watching. (Willis - 4/4/2006 11:33:20 PM)

The video will be posted on the Comedy Central Website sometime during the day after the original showing.  When I find the link, I'll post it.

Somebody definitely needs to capture the interview with a video capture card so that we can share it with folks who don't see the original broadcast.

That's part of the "Better know a District" series, Jonathan.  You are correct, however, in saying he's a Virginian on the show.  I guess I should say that "We've never had a Virginian as the Main Guest."

Good catch, though.  I almost forgot about Moran.

You are incorrect. J (Jonathan Mark - 4/4/2006 11:33:20 PM)
You are incorrect. Jim Moran was on the Colbert Report in December. They did a skit where Colbert insulted Moran and Moran then punched Colbert in the jaw.
