One of the more frequent excuses I hear from citizens who choose not to vote is that their vote will not matter.  Well, if yesterday's election proved something, it is that that excuse is completely invalid.  As it approaches a full day after polls closed we still have:

As it approaches a full day after polls closed we still have:

No one can use the excuse that their vote does not count anymore, and we have to do something about verifying our elections; making them more transparent, and easier to validate.  We need to nationalize election procedures and rules.

I used information from pollster.com, fivethirtyeight.com, and cnn.com to put this post/diary together; did I miss any other really close races?  If so - please let me know.

Wow: Undervote in VA-05 is 287 times the margin (snolan - 11/5/2008 7:04:01 PM)
According to the Virginia State Board of Elections website, the undervote for congress (compared to president) in the 5th district is a whopping 8,903! When compared to only 31 votes difference, there ought to be nearly nine thousand voters kicking themselves this morning.

I am shocked that the undervote for senate is even bigger (over 9000 votes); which baffles me as the Warner vs Gilmore race was a no brainer choice; though perhaps it got very little attention because it was so one sided.

323,958 5th district voters voted for president
314,331 5th district voters voted for senator
315,055 5th district voters voted for congressman

8903 5th district voters kicking themselves for not completing the ballot

In 2004, the undervote was more in the 14-15K range, I believe (aznew - 11/5/2008 7:12:42 PM)
The Perriello campaign was well aware of this problem, and did all they could to put people at polls. I said "Don't forget Tom Perriello" so many times yesterday, I  couldn't open my mouth for several hours last night without those words coming out, no matter what I was thinking in my head.

As for Warner, I think it is probably explained by the McCain vote that may not have recognized Gilmore's name on the GOP side of the ticket and, thinking all Democrats are commies, just didn't vote since they didn't know who he was.
