Polls in Virginia close in an hour and a half -- spread the word that if people are in line by 7 p.m., they are legally allowed to vote.

This is it.  Leave it all on the road.  The Obama campaign has sent out an urgent request for volunteering in Virginia, including emailing your friend and family, so get going!

And here's one more election day open thread, with updates as needed....

It's the economy, stupid (Lowell - 11/4/2008 6:46:09 PM)
Well, this sure is a shocker!

The economy is by far the top issue on voters' minds as Election Day at last arrives. An Associated Press exit poll finds six in 10 voters across the country picked the economy as the most important issue facing the nation. None of four other issues on the list - energy, Iraq, terrorism and health care - was picked by more than one in 10.

The economy's the main thing on peoples' minds right now? You don't say...

Virginia exit poll results (Lowell - 11/4/2008 6:54:06 PM)
from Huffington Post. I'd take them with a huge grain, maybe even a pillar, of salt!

VIRGINIA -- POLL CLOSE: 7:00 PM

-- 22% of the vote is African American and Obama is winning 91% of it.
-- Among white voters, 58% are backing McCain, while 41% are supporting Obama. In 2004, Kerry won 32% of the vote here while Bush won 68% of it.
-- 72% disapprove of the job Bush is doing; only 27% approve.
-- More than half of voters think McCain will continue Bush's policies; fewer think he will take the country in a different direction.
-- Obama is winning the support of both men and women, but white men and white women are backing McCain.
-- Among whites, one in five said race was a factor in their vote today and they backed Mccain.
-- More blacks (4 in 10) said race was a factor and they voted overwhelmingly for Obama.
-- Obama looks to be improving on Kerry's margins in Northern Virginia.
-- Most voters say McCain as the candidate on the attack: nearly 7 in 10 say he attacked Obama unfairly; fewer than half say Obama attacked McCain unfairly.

National exit poll results (Lowell - 11/4/2008 6:57:11 PM)
Again, take with a huge grain of salt:

*Obama took 72% of first time voters

*38% believe Palin is qualified to be President

*67% believe Biden is qualified to be President

*51% want government to do more, while 43% want government to do less

*63% of those concerned about Iraq voted Obama

*62% say the economy is #1 issue; Iraq is second at 10%

Virginia SBE has a nice widget here: (ericy - 11/4/2008 7:16:37 PM)

They say that they will have real data starting at about 7:30.

Don't be discouraged by this widget (Pain - 11/4/2008 8:58:14 PM)

Considering my experience from 2006, the numbers didn't flip for Webb until very late, when the NoVA numbers came in.  These early numbers are from very small precincts in the south.

It may still end up being close, but these numbers aren't a big concern yet.

Voted at 6am (Craig - 11/4/2008 7:20:15 PM)
In Fairfax City, Obama for Pres, Warner for Senate, Connolly for Congress.  Wait was only 40 mins, surprisingly.

NBC just called Warner in VA. (Pain - 11/4/2008 8:09:57 PM)

Shocking, I know.

Heresay: Obama May Carry NC (norman swingvoter - 11/4/2008 8:30:41 PM)
I am surfing between 3 networks.  A commentator said a senior republican friend of his in NC sent him a text message that African-Americans had turned out in much larger numbers than expected.  He expects Obama to carry NC and Dole to lose. Don't hold your breath but it sounds encouraging.
