Danville Register & Bee Endorses Tom Perriello in VA-05

It begins:
This newspaper hasn't endorsed a Democrat for Congress since Virgil Goode was a Democrat. Since Goode's first campaign for Congress in 1996, we have backed him in every election, defended him from what we thought was unfair criticism by challengers and wished for him a long career in Washington.

But today, the Danville Register & Bee endorses Tom Perriello for the 5th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. We haven't left Virgil Goode. Virgil Goode has left us.

And ends:

If we send Goode back to Washington, how many more times will he vote against our interests? We can't take that chance. On Tuesday, it's time to elect a young man of integrity, energy, faith and hard work. It's time to send Tom Perriello to Congress.

Please read the in between, and for the love of all things good, volunteer and GOTV!

Very impressive (Lowell - 10/31/2008 8:30:58 AM)
especially coming from a newspaper that's endorsed Virgil Goode time and time again, that just endorsed John McCain (ack!), etc.  Obviously, if Virgil Goode's gotten too toxic even for the Register & Bee, that's really saying something.

On the positive side, the Register & Bee heap praise on Tom Perriello, and deservedly so. Since I met Tom for the first time last winter, I've been extremely impressed with him. WHEN he is elected on Tuesday, he will make a great representative for the 5th CD, a huge upgrade - it's impossible to overstate how huge - from the pathetic, corrupt congresscritter currently occupying the seat.  It's time for  a change all over this country, and the 5th CD more than anywhere.  Go Tom!

Message from Tom (Lowell - 10/31/2008 10:30:05 AM)
This weekend we are about to launch the largest and most impressive Get Out the Vote (GOTV) effort the Fifth District has ever seen. Over five hundred volunteers will be knocking on thousands of doors, making tens of thousands of phone calls and making sure every voter goes to the polls on Tuesday. We will reach over 80,000 people in the next four days with our message. We need you to be a part of this movement.

No matter where you are, you can help us. Volunteer this weekend, and help us bring new leadership to Washington.

Today I have received wonderful news. The Danville Register & Bee has endorsed me to be the next Congressman from Virginia's 5th District. This paper has backed Virgil Goode every year he's run until now. Here's what they said in part:

This newspaper hasn't endorsed a Democrat for Congress since Virgil Goode was a Democrat. Since Goode's first campaign for Congress in 1996, we have backed him in every election, defended him from what we thought was unfair criticism by challengers and wished for him a long career in Washington.

But today, the Danville Register & Bee endorses Tom Perriello for the 5th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

We haven't left Virgil Goode. Virgil Goode has left us.

On Tuesday, it's time to elect a young man of integrity, energy, faith and hard work. It's time to send Tom Perriello to Congress.

I am so honored to have the endorsement of the Register & Bee. It shows the commitment that I have made to Southside. We have seven of our eight offices in Southside Virginia, and reviving the economy and cutting taxes for working families there is my number one priority in Congress. The Register & Bee endorsement is wonderful but we still need your help. Every voter you talk to brings us closer to bringing new solutions to Washington.

Come to one of our offices for our phonebanking parties, or go knock on neighborhood doors with other volunteers. Help us make signs and phone calls and help us be seen at every precinct on Tuesday. Even if you're unable to get to our office, you can make calls from home. We need your help.

Volunteer for us in these last few days. You can make the difference this election.

This election will be won with the hard work of our volunteers and the tens of thousands of hours they have put into our campaign. Your support truly humbles me, and I cannot show my appreciation enough. In Congress, I will fight the culture of corruption and be a leader Central and Southside Virginia can be proud of. Thank you so much for your support in the past, I hope you'll help us in the last 4 days.

Blessings,

Tom

OF course Virgil Goode might (thegools - 10/31/2008 10:42:52 AM)
turn-coat again and run as a Democrat, what with how the country seems to be swaying back to the Democratic Party.
