Major Scandal, Coverup by Virgil Goode?

Sources in the 5th Congressional District have been contacting me about Virgil Goode, and what I'm hearing is the following:

*Virgil Goode has exhibited at best questionable ethics and legality in using his congressional office in the promotion of a private enterprise, the North Theater (as reported on Huffington Post, Goode "moved an earmark for $150,000 to the very theater run by the movie's ["Eden's Curve"] producer.")

*There is reportedly a "cover-up under way" and "an intense effort by Virgil Goode to keep the lid on this potential scandal through the election."  I was specifically told by one source that "Virgil Goode is working his hardest to kill this story and has managed to muffle 2 local reporters who had it by doing something with higher-ups."

*Another source noted that Virgil Goode's "blatant cronyism and possible illegality has been greeted by silence across the board from every newspaper in the 5th district" and also in Washington, DC.

*One reporter's story apparently "was shut down with the lame excuse by an editor that 'all politicians lie, so there is no news here.'"

*While a few news outlets (e.g., the Charlottesville Daily Progress, the Danville Register & Bee, the Martinsville Bulletin and the Washington Post) ran with the initial connection between Virgil Goode, Jerry Meadors (artistic director of the North Theater and producer/writer of the homoerotic film, "Eden's Curve"), Goode's former press secretary Linwood Duncan (who is featured in the film and is a long-time friend of Jerry Meadors), and the theater, not one ran a single follow up story. Strange.
*As reported earlier on RK by a diarist writing under the pseudoynm, KFP:

According to the 2003 Toronto Gay and Lesbian Film Festival where the film was featured, Eden's Curve was listed along with Jerry Meadors (pictured above with Virgil Goode) name. What is most striking is that the contact number for the film is for Virgil Goode's Danville office!  The fax number listed above is the same fax number for Goode's Danville Congressional office...

*I was told by one source that Linwood Duncan "'resigned' the day after editors at the Register & Bee killed a story about Duncan's resignation, telling their reporters that they could not cover it." This same source added that "the editors also pulled all mention of the fax number out of the story."

*I'm hearing that Duncan announced his "resignation" a day after Goode was told that the fax connection to his office was known.

*Another fascinating piece of information: the story about Goode's fax number reportedly was kept out of the coverage of Duncan's resignation, and the Perriello campaign was specifically told they could not mention anything about the fax in their quote for the Duncan story, or in their quote about the timing of the resignation smelling fishy. All that information was deleted from the story.

*I'm told that reporters who covered the initial story have this information, want to print it, are eager to dig deeper, but then seem to hit a roadblock when it comes to putting something in print. Only the Daily Progress has mentioned the movie in the context of Duncan's departure from Goode's congressional office. Why isn't the "mainstream media" running any follow-up stories? With proof right in front of them, why are newspapers afraid of printing it?

So, that's what I've got from sources in the 5th CD.  Now, where's the "mainstream media" to follow up and print all the information they have on Virgil Goode?

I just saw this! (JMU Duke - 10/30/2008 7:20:24 PM)
I just put up a post on my blog asking why the outlets that covered Duncan's resignation failed to mention it in the context of the controversy surrounding Eden's Curve.

I called several of them and got basically nowhere.

While we're on the subject of Virgil (Lowell - 10/30/2008 7:39:24 PM)

Where else was Goode's number used to promote the movie? (KFP - 10/30/2008 9:41:13 PM)
The extent of Goode's congressional office being used for promoting Jerry Meador's Film Eden's Curve (featuring Linwood Duncan) may have extended beyond the 2003 Toronto Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.  The same year, the film was featured around the world at these festivals:

2003 Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival

2003 London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival

2003 North Carolina Gay and Lesbian Film Festival

16th Annual Austin Gay & Lesbian International Film Festival

Chicago International Lesbian & Gay Film Festival

If Goode's office was used in promoting the film in Toronto, was it used in 2003 in Miami, London, North Carolina, Austin, and Chicago?

How can we have these questions answered if Goode is deliberately hiding the truth and preventing the media from doing their jobs?
