There was a Veterans for Obama rally last Saturday, October 18, that attracted a large crowd of people in Fairfax, Virginia. I was humbled to be in a crowd that included veterans from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War in the 90's, Iraq, Afghanistan, and various other engagements. One of the speakers had even won the Medal of Honor during his service in Vietnam. Needless to say, it was very moving to hear the stories of how much these men and women had given to their country.

What was very interesting to me was the fact that many of the veterans spoke about how this election was the first time they had spoken publicly in support of a presidential candidate. The reason they did so was because they realized the importance of this election and recognized that Barack Obama is the candidate who will be able to restore faith in the American government both at home and abroad. Others pointed out that they wanted the public to know that there are many men and women who have served in the armed forces and believe that Obama would make an excellent Commander in Chief.

The following video is a portion of Gerry Connolly's speech in which he highlights the importance of this election. I believe it's worth watching because its sentiment was echoed by the veterans who spoke later in the event.
