same in nova (GAida - 10/25/2008 4:26:21 PM)
except in nova around the rt 123 area all the big signs have "SOCIALIST DANGER" spray painted on the signs.

Dumb Post (phillip123 - 10/25/2008 4:39:24 PM)
This is not worth posting.  and does a dis-service to the campaign.

Knowing (NP - 10/25/2008 4:51:03 PM)
I want any McPain people who are reading here to have their faces rubbed in this.  I'm OK with knowing about it too.

What in the world are you talking about? (thegools - 10/25/2008 7:03:30 PM)
This happened. It's real and shows the ugliness that has been thrown up against this campaign.

I hope this was reported to the police.

Is anybody really surprised? Honestly? (DanG - 10/25/2008 5:34:12 PM)

Does this "work"? (Teddy - 10/25/2008 6:03:12 PM)
Whenever I see a political sign defaced, my reaction is "how childish." Graffiti can be interesting, even artistic in the right time and place, but spray painting signs is vandalism, and I'll bet most people feel as I do, and, far from being impressed by the spray-painted message, probably notice the message of the sign itself, and are more sympathetic. It gets the sign's original message noticed amid all the clutter of signs, if anything. Such tactics remind voters of the of all the other sleaze and lies of the McCain campaign, and so spraying signs is counter-productive.

No, it doesn't work (DanG - 10/25/2008 6:38:14 PM)
Just people venting their anger.  As a matter of fact, the only thing I see something like this doing is firing up Obama Supporters.

Exactly. (Lowell - 10/25/2008 7:12:04 PM)

This happened in Appomattox, too (Roland the HTG - 10/25/2008 7:03:27 PM)
To one of their committee members, who is the most fundamentally decent person I've ever worked with. It's a damn outrage that this sh!t can happen in the 21st century.

video - that is all I have to say! n/t (totallynext - 10/26/2008 12:57:00 AM)

"Outrage"? (TheGreenMiles - 10/26/2008 8:28:27 AM)
Some dope with a can of spray paint (that he apparently has trouble operating correctly) doesn't get me outraged. This does.

Yes, that is far far FAR worse (Lowell - 10/26/2008 10:44:27 AM)
No question about it.

This is important. (Great Blue - 10/26/2008 8:34:32 AM)
The KKK said they would attend the Ole Miss event last month, too.

Instead of disavowing this infamous hate group, John McCain, before and since, has attacked Civil Rights hero John Lewis.

Don't kid yourself.  This is a threat.

Stay safe, Barack.

Obama seems to be channeling RFK. (thegools - 10/26/2008 9:43:23 PM)
Now I am starting to understand the vibe of hope that was surrounding Robert Kennedy in 1968.  And we all know what happened to RFK.  I fear for Obama.  This country seems to kill off its inspiring, progressive leaders.

The hatred for and threat caused by Obama in some quarters is real.

I pray for our country and for Obama's safety everyday.

The real problem (aznew - 10/26/2008 11:56:18 AM)
The real problem here is not a bunch of ignorant racist knuckleheads (although I don't mean to blithely dismiss these elements in our society, as they are often violent and dangerous), but rather the sub rosa message from the GOP that that seems to encourage this sort of bigotry.

We saw it in the quick embrace of that sad hoax out of Pittburgh recently. As the election gets closer, and McCain's position more desperate, there seems to be virtually no effort to even hide the racial subtext anymore.

This has also been going on for a while in the Jewish communicty, and as the election get near, all pretense is falling away. TPM flags this AP story about an email from the Pennsylvania GOP (although they and the McCain campaign tried to distance themselves from it after the fact) suggesting that Obama's election would lead to a second Holcaust.

http://www.talkingpointsmemo.c...

The email states:

Jewish Americans cannot afford to make the wrong decision on Tuesday, November 4th, 2008. Many of our ancestors ignored the warning signs in the 1930s and 1940s and made a tragic mistake. Let's not make a similar one this year!

And if anyone thinks that these incidents are unrelated or not part of a coordinated effort by the GOP, TPM helpfully points out that the McCain campaign official who disavowed this email was Peter Feldman, the same operative who was flogging the hoax story last week.

So, while this is likely the act of idiots with some spray paint who might have done what they did regardless, this kind of hatred is being tacitly accepted and even encouraged by parts of our political culture and instiutions.

I know there are plenty of racists out there in society, but I did think we were beyond this, even subliminally, in our mainsream politics.

Not even close.
