Just now, on Meet the Press, former Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Colin Powell endorses Senator Barack Obama.

This is likely the last "nail in the coffin" for MaCain-Palin.  More to follow...

Is MTP pre-recorded? (Pain - 10/19/2008 9:32:35 AM)

What am I missing?

Oh, nevermind (Pain - 10/19/2008 9:38:45 AM)

Here's a link.  Another step toward both the real and the fake Virginia going blue.

OMG (Pain - 10/19/2008 9:45:54 AM)

I just finished watching the video.  It's devastating.  Colin Powell addresses ALL the smears and destroys them all.

Priceless.

Rebroadcasts (cycle12 - 10/19/2008 9:46:26 AM)
That's correct, "Pain" and, from that website - for those who may have missed it - there's this:

"Note Re-Broadcast Time: Meet the Press is re-broadcast on MSNBC-TV Sunday nights at 6 pm ET/3pm PT and again at 2 am ET/11pm PT."

I certainly intend to stay tuned...

Thanks!

Steve

WOOOHOOOOO!!! (cycle12 - 10/19/2008 9:37:31 AM)
Just watched it and was laughing out loud and clapping my hands in sheer delight!  Colin Powell touched upon every important aspect of this presidential race, the strengths and weaknesses of both candidates and Parties and then gave his endorsement to Barack Obama for all the right reasons.

To repeat from my earlier RK post about this possibility; just imagine what might have happened with this election if Colin Powell had been John McCain's vice-presidential running mate...

Next step:  Make a concerted effort to bring Colin Powell into the Obama/Biden administration and, possibly, into the Democratic Party as well.

Is it November 4 yet?!

Please stay tuned...

Thanks!

Steve

We Need a Powell Road Show ASAP! (jsrutstein - 10/19/2008 9:58:38 AM)

Powell has such a George Washington personna.. (chspkheel - 10/19/2008 10:07:02 AM)
The reluctant warrior, not seeking the spotlight, but will serve if called upon (begged to).  And, it really comes across a genuine, and I believe it is.

I would like to see him out there with Obama, but he stated that with so little time left, he is going to leave it up to Obama and McCain to slug it out.  I think he must feel that it is enough to publicly endorse Obama like he did, in spite of his long time friendship and relationship with McCain.  Let's hope that he changes his mind.

Great Analogy (mmc0412 - 10/20/2008 2:21:35 PM)
He sure does have a George Washington persona!

My reaction (martha - 10/19/2008 10:05:58 AM)
was to cry. I got very emotional. I am happy and encouraged!

I cried too (mmc0412 - 10/20/2008 2:22:34 PM)
I cried when he brought up the Muslim soldier.  That was so poignant.

This thing ain't over yet... (chspkheel - 10/19/2008 9:49:43 AM)
Now, let's put McCain-Palin away and help send the rest of these knuckleheads back home with them!!!  POUT IT ON!!!

I mean POUR IT ON!!! (sorry, I had a fat finger...) (chspkheel - 10/19/2008 9:55:55 AM)

Pout it on (Pain - 10/19/2008 9:58:23 AM)

That's what Sarah Palin is for.  She can pout that another elite republican army general is attacking her.

Hey, I got a little excited... (chspkheel - 10/19/2008 10:02:04 AM)
But McCain-Palin must be doing a fair amount of poutin' and crying in their coffee this morning.

Thanks for posting the YouTub feed! (chspkheel - 10/19/2008 10:11:21 AM)

Character and Leadership (jsrutstein - 10/19/2008 10:16:11 AM)
I wasn't happy when Powell chose to come out as a Republican after leaving the military.

I was disappointed when Powell chose not to run for President the first time it came up, although I admired his being unafraid to say it was in deference to his wife's wishes.

I may never forgive Powell for facilitating the war in Iraq by lying to the world in his presentation to the U.N., although I believe he sincerely feels worse about that than I ever could.

I don't put a lot in the so-called "character" issue, because I've been burned on that with people I've been close to, so how I can really tell with someone I've never met?

I think the key quality to look for in voting for a representative, especially for President of the U.S., is leadership.  I don't think anyone can question Powell's capacity in this regard.  The latest statement by him this morning on Meet the Press about how it shouldn't matter even if Obama were a Muslim to me is a perfect example of leadership on a very important issue right now.

Powell endorsing Obama as his choice to lead us next year, especially given the challenges we'll face is not the "game changer" for which the media pine.  After all, Obama's already clearly ahead.  But I think Powell's endorsement will prove to be the game ender, and all I can say is "At last!"

Agreed on all points except one... (cycle12 - 10/19/2008 11:22:30 AM)
I don't believe that Powell lied to the UN since that would be a determination of intent.  At the time, I think Powell truly believed the intelligence reports about WMDs in Iraq and was merely addressing those concerns as he thought he should as a former U. S. General and as our Secretary of State.

Thanks!

Steve

fair enough (jsrutstein - 10/19/2008 11:47:13 AM)
I don't have the proof that Powell lied to the U.N., and i shouldn't have implied otherwise.

Nevertheless, Powell knew at the time of his presentation that there were serious weaknesses in the Administration's case for going to war, and he knew or should have known that his presentation at that time in that way would be pivotal.

He's expressed deep regret over that presentation, and I bet, if he could turn back time, he wouldn't have done it, certainly not in that "case closed" way.

Then again, he probably would have had his remarks vetted before hand, and, if he wouldn't commit to a "case closed" argument, the presentation would have been given by someone else, probably Negroponte, and we probably would have gone to war right when we did, and in the way we did, anyway.  I think we would have done this even had Powell resigned in protest before the war.

Today's endorsement will be a supreme test for the GOP, the Bush Administration, and McCain and his supporters.  They probably won't immediately go after Powell, but when the nutjobs do so, it'll be very telling how quickly they move to denounce the haters.  They don't have a very good record thus far.  In fact, about the only weapons left in their arsenal are hate and fear.  Perhaps if they go further in that direction and the polls further tighten, Powell will go on the road for Obama.

Agreed... (cycle12 - 10/19/2008 1:07:13 PM)
...and in his remarks this morning on MTP, Powell said that, had he resigned in protest of the initiation of the Iraq war, he did not think that would have stopped it.

Thanks!

Steve

We need to dig up... (elevandoski - 10/19/2008 10:29:55 AM)
We need to dig up that photo of the mother at her's son's grave!  I personally would love to see it and celebrate it!

The photo is devastating (Catzmaw - 10/20/2008 6:37:42 PM)
It's in several places on the internet.  Here's just one link:

What would Virgil say? (chspkheel - 10/20/2008 6:51:57 PM)
If you remember, back in 2006 after the mid-term elections, Virgil wanted to change immigration policy so that no more "Muslims" would be able to run for congress.  I wonder what ol' Virgil would have to say to the family of this brave American soldier, who payed the ultimate price, and is a "Muslim"?
