This is going to be close, no wonder why Drake is ducking debates and generally freaking out. Go Glenn!

Re:      VA-02 Survey Results

The following is a summary of findings from a telephone survey conducted among 400 likely voters in the Second Congressional District of Virginia.  Interviews were conducted October 14-15, 2008.  The sampling error for this survey is plus or minus 4.9 percentage points. Party Identification: 39% Dem, 13% Ind, 47% GOP.

FINDINGS

Challenger Glenn Nye remains in a strong position to defeat Thelma Drake. Specifically:

* With less than three weeks to go, Glenn Nye continues to grow his vote and trails by just five points, 42%-47%.

Now, Nye leads 47-34% among Independents, the critical group of swing voters.

* Nye has also improved his name identification to 69%.

Additionally, perceptions of Drake have grown even worse since September and remain far below the critical 50% for an incumbent:

* A majority now Give Drake a negative job rating-51% rate Drake's performance as a member of Congress as "only fair" or "poor" while just 40% rate her performance as only "excellent" or "good."  Among Independents, her job rating is even lower at 29%-59%.

* Drake's favorable rating is also low.  She has a favorable rating of just 42% positive and 35% negative.  In May, her favorable rating was 48%-29%.

Glenn Nye's message - he is an independent voice for Hampton Roads who has volunteered to serve in conflict zones in Afghanistan, Kosovo and Iraq - is clearly resonating with voters.  Moreover, Drake's personal attacks have fallen flat.

By the way, just a little side note, but I thought it was interesting to note that Drake's top three supporters on her third quarter financial report were the GOP ($58,750), the oil industry ($24,550), and the health care industry ($21,425). That might help explain Drake's votes against renewable power and quality health care for all Americans, among other things...

What's the family emergency? (Great Blue - 10/17/2008 6:21:59 PM)
I was very worried when Thelma cancelled the last debate.  I want to send her a card.  I don't know what kind of card to send.  It must be pretty bad, because she's not answering phone calls.

Haha...Told ya! (Dan - 10/17/2008 8:19:41 PM)
You know, the main criticism of my last House Update was that Thelma Drake was whupping Glenn Nye, and I needed to downgrade the race to leaning for Drake.  I had the race as a toss-up.  Now, I know 5 points isn't necessarily a toss-up, but can I at least get some credit for thinking this race is a bit closer than the last poll indicated?

We have no reason to doubt that a fine candidate like Glenn Nye has a good chance to knock off Thelma Drake, who only won the district by 2 points in 2006; pretty bad for an incumbent.
I still think this race is a toss-up.

This district was never  a safe one for Drake.  If Drake manages to win in 2008, she'll still have to fight hard in 2010.  Maybe if she actually tried to be a decent Congresswomen, she wouldn't have to face such tough races every two years. However, there is little chance of that happening, and no matter the result in 2008, Thelma "I 'heart' Dick Cheney" Drake won't last much longer with her paltry voting record.

C'mon, Glenn! (Lawyer Mama - 10/18/2008 12:04:06 AM)
18 days to go.

Great Blue - I'm thinking the same thing. If she's not returning calls it must be horrible.  I mean, what kind of representative would back out of a debate without a life or death situation....?

P.S. Lowell - nice picture. (-;

Be reasonable! (Vivian J. Paige - 10/18/2008 9:39:01 AM)
There is no need to attack Drake personally, especially when you don't have all of the facts.

Her 90-year-old mother is in hospice, for goodness sake.

Attack her policy positions all you want, but leave speculations on her family emergency out of it.
