Obama in Roanoke; Webb Comments Again on Palin Pick

"I think every single American has a right to affordable, accessible health care." - Barack Obama

Also, see here for what Jim Webb had to say at the Roanoke rally.

"What is the one decision that a candidate for president makes before he or she is elected that clearly indicates what their judgment is?" Webb asked the crowd. "The selection for who is going to run with that individual as Vice President."

"Do you really think that Sarah Palin is the most qualified person in the Republican party?" Webb asked the crowd after heralding Biden's credentials.

He said the choice reminded him of a country and western song, "I Know What I Was Doing, but What Was I Thinking?" (The refrain from the song, by Dierks Bentley, "What Was I Thinking," is actually "Well I know what I was feeling/But What was I thinking?") "John McCain is probably singing that sing right now," Webb said.

Ha, it works for me either way! :)

I'm back home from Roanoke (a bit late) (KathyinBlacksburg - 10/17/2008 5:20:17 PM)
And it was awesome.  No blogging or news-like reporting today.  (I know, what kind of a blogger am I?)  But today I and the hubby went together.  We held hands.  We loved the huge and absolutely joyful crowd.  We both had tears in our eyes and we were both on our feet, over and over, cheering for Barack.  A great day in Roanoke.

Young an old together.  I will blog something about this later today, or in the AM.  But there's a theme I want to write about...no overall reporting. So, more later.

Now, perhaps Barack will also come to Virginia Tech!!!!

Forgot... (KathyinBlacksburg - 10/17/2008 5:21:58 PM)
we stood in the rain for hours.  And we still got that crowd!  I must admit conditions weren't as degraded as the mud that those at Mary Washington endured.  And we only had some brief downpours.  Had the weather been better, it would have been even harder to get in.

More Webb.... (Lowell - 10/17/2008 5:29:49 PM)

Media coverage (Lowell - 10/17/2008 5:44:19 PM)
WSLS-10:

...the Illinois senator stumped in Roanoke for several hours Friday, giving a speech to more than 8,000 supporters at the Roanoke Civic Center, then visiting a downtown barber shop.

Virginia Tech Collegiate Times:

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama addressed an electric crowd filling the Roanoke Civic Center to capacity early this afternoon, campaigning in a traditionally conservative area of a commonwealth that has not voted in favor of a Democrat in a presidential election since 1964.

Jay Warren interviews Obama:

We want to do well in Southwest Virginia. We want to do well across the state. I think what people are seeing here are what people across the country are seeing. Jobs are being lost, wages are going down, people are very worried about their life savings given what's happened on Wall Street. People are looking for a new direction in the economy. That's the message we're bringing.

Excellent Webb, Obama, Boucher photo (Lowell - 10/18/2008 5:29:11 AM)

Great job by Aaron Mahler of 1/2 Press on the photo of Webb/Obama/Boucher and many others from the Obama rally in Roanoke yesterday.  See them all in html gallery here.

I love this photo of Senator Webb:

A great day in Roanoke! (Jerry Saleeby - 10/18/2008 8:05:13 AM)
It was my second time seeing Obama.  I saw him when visiting my daughter in Charlotte.  Yesterday, it seemed more special.  I had to endure the rain for hours.  It was an historic event for Roanoke.  The first visit by a presidential candidate in 48 years.  My friend who accompanied me, remembers as a child missing out on JKF's visit.  He was determined to be there this time.  I saw a number of colleagues and several of my current and former students.  And, of course, Obama was great!  One could sense in the crowd that we have seized the momentum.  We now must continue to push hard towards the finish line!
