Early voting info and open thread

Early voting (or "in-person absentee" as it's called in Virginia) is in full swing now.  With almost 440,000 potential new voters in the Commonwealth, it is critical for as many eligible voters as possible to vote now to make those Election Day lines manageable.  Plus, every banked vote now is one less vote for which the Obama campaign needs to do GOTV.

If you were thinking about voting on a weekend before the election, there are only three weekends of early voting left!  Here are some links that provide info for early voting in a number of our cities that I could find.

Fairfax
Albermarle/Charlottesville
Arlington
Alexandria
City of Chesapeake
City of Falls Church
Fredricksburg
Lexington
Loudoun County
Manassass
Manassass Park
Prince William County
Richmond
Virginia Beach
All voter registrar offices -- call and ask for "in-person absentee voting information"

These are the only cities posting specific info on their web pages, though in-person voting is probably occurring in any city's Voter Registrars office.  Just look up that office's number to confirm before going.

If you've got more info to share or your own early voting experience, drop 'em in the comments.  Also, important cities like Richmond, Hampton, and Norfolk don't post any real info on in-person absentee, so any details would be appreciated.  And letting them know to post this sort of info would be nice too.

And, if you're a student, organize an early voting outing for eligible fellow students.  If you're a volunteer, see if you can convince your local Obama office to organize an early voting trip for area supporters who can vote in-person absentee.  And if you know of someone who will probably be working and commuting all day on Election Day, look up their early voting info and email it to 'em!

Rolling updates: Added Manassass, Manassass Park, Chesapeake and Richmond info.  Added link to all voter registration offices.

Drove Past My Local Satellite Voting Station on Wednesday (BP - 10/17/2008 11:03:52 AM)
Wednesday was the first day the satellite locations were open in Fairfax County and the Fairfax County Democrats had a volunteer outside with a fully stocked Obama table.  Pretty damn impressive.

Remind everyone you know that pretty much everyone who lives in Fairfax County and works in DC would qualify for early absentee (when I had to commute to DC, a typical day was leaving my house at 7AM and returning at 7:30PM).  The Fairfax County satellite locations are open until 8PM.

And... (BP - 10/17/2008 11:14:17 AM)
...as this is an open thread, I thought I'd take the opportunity to request another Dick Wad(hams) update.  It seems he's managed to knock another nine points or so off of his candidate's numbers in just the past nine or ten days.  See: http://www.realclearpolitics.c...

If we have enough left in the RK travel account, maybe we could send Aznew out to Denver for an in-depth interview with our friend Dick.  I want all the details on his personal brand of Republican hackery so that we can urge Virginia Republicans to adopt the same approach here.

Virginia Beach early voting (Great Blue - 10/17/2008 12:09:07 PM)
A member of our family voted at the Registrar's office on Columbus Day.  It went very smoothly.  There were five other people there doing the same.  We parked right out front, and the entire process took about 10 minutes.
--Registrar's office workers were very friendly but the phones were ringing off the hook with people checking their registrations or trying to correct problems.  Looks like turnout will be heavy.
I agree that like in NoVa, many commuters here will fit the requirement that they may be unable to get to the polls on Election Day.  Also, if someone is unable to stand in line at all or for a long period, the Registrar's office has ample handicapped parking and is accessible (from the rear entrance).
--The Registrar's office is on Princess Anne Road, at the Municipal Center, next to the Fire Station.  There are signs out in front with "Vote Here" prominently displayed.
There is no excuse for not voting!!

Did just that! (elevandoski - 10/17/2008 5:54:44 PM)
Easy as pie! Although I got beeped at when I pulled off Princess Anne to park in front. I thought it commentary on my bumper stickers.  Turned out it was School Board candidate (and fabo Democrat) Brent MacKenzie beeping to say "Hi".  I'm so glad I didn't flip him the bird!

I have a question about PWC early voting (themom59 - 10/17/2008 5:52:41 PM)
This is from the RK link for PWC:

How may I vote Absentee In-Person?

Absentee voting in-person begins approximately 45 days prior to a general election, depending upon the availability of ballots. There are two locations for Prince William County voters:

PWC Voter Registration and Elections Office, 9250 Lee Avenue, Suite 1  Manassas, VA 20110
PWC Voter Registration Office at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), 2731 Caton Hill Road, Woodbridge (located inside DMV building)
The Absentee Ballot application form is available at both locations. When you go to vote In-Person, you will complete the form, provide an appropriate ID (see Voter ID Requirements), and vote on a voting machine just as you would on Election Day.

Serious question....what happens with those voting machines in the next two weeks? Do they tally the votes at the end of each day, and then wipe the slate clean for the next day? Or do they let all the votes "sit" in the machine until Nov. 4? That possibility unnerves me a bit. Two weeks is an awful long time for a voting machine to store ballots! What happens if there's a power outage, or somebody (my kid, perhaps?) kicks the power cord out? Worse, what happens if somebody is able to hack into those machines while the sit unattended overnights and weekends?

I'm sure somebody knows the answer. I really thought we'd be using paper absentee ballots that would stay sealed until election night, so the idea of a voting machine surprises me.

Chesapeake (Lawyer Mama - 10/18/2008 12:41:51 AM)
You can do in person voting in Chesapeake at the Registrar's Office at:

411 Cedar Road
Chesapeake, Virginia 23328
Phone: (757) 277-9797

You can also vote at the Russell Memorial Library at 2808 Taylor Road

Absentee (tripinva - 10/18/2008 11:06:56 AM)
I mailed off my absentee ballot a few days ago.

I'm at UVA and at home I'm still in Virgil Goode's district, so it wouldn't matter where I was registered.  I know the people at the Registrar's office back home, so I feel safer dealing with them.

Let's go Perriello!

Frederick County - Winchester (anitab - 10/21/2008 4:37:42 PM)
Does anyone have information on hours and location for absentee in person voting for Frederick County?

Here you go (Pain - 10/21/2008 5:31:54 PM)

http://www.co.frederick.va.us/...

http://www.co.frederick.va.us/...

http://www.winchesterva.gov/vo...

If this doesn't help, just google 'Winchester VA Voting', or 'Frederick County VA voting', etc.

Times and Location for Frederick County (anitab - 10/23/2008 5:10:27 PM)
Frederick County doesn't make it easy.  The web site doesn't give the hours or location of absentee in person voting.  A call to the Registrar revealed that there is one location - the Registrar's office at 107 N. Kent Street, Suite 102, Winchester, VA 22601. Hours are 8:30 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday and Saturday, October 25 and November 1.
